Hmmm...according to the CBC (the only news I trust), McCain currently has (at 3:23 BC time) 59.9% of the popular vote. Am I the only one surprised by this?

(ETA: Twelve minutes later- Indiana has thrown some result in, which gives Obama 51% of the popular vote.....)

If they are reporting poll results before the polls close, I would reconsider your trust in the CBC.

According to the BBC, Electorals reported so far: McCain - 8 and Obama - 3. But it doesn't say what state that's from.

And let the games begin.

The 8:00 (EST) closings are usually the bellwether for them to start calling certain states. The only "big boys" in play at 8, though, are Florida... but that'll be a long time before it's called.... and Virginia, where I'd have thought there'd be more Republican support, but apparently is considered a safe state for Obama.

That's nothing! MSNBC, called VT for Obama with 0% reporting!
Not that that's much of a stretch... cold reading odds that is...

Ya know, I would not be against a low saying no official results for national races could be released until polls all over the nation have closed. The Networks could still project from their freaking exit polls, but it would look so bad they would no do it.

Mods - could someone merge this with the SezMe thread?
I might do this, FMW, if I knew exactly what thread you were talking about. Normally this stuff goes faster if you report a post. Please be sure to include pertinent information, like a link or at least the thread name of the thread you are proposing merger with.

Interesting. CNN's exit polls have McCain and Obama splitting the male vote 49-49, with Obama leading among women 55-44. Which would translate to a 5+ point victory for Obama. I'm skeptical.

The Last Act

The opera has gone on too long;
the action has begun to pall;
we still await her final song
before they let the curtain fall.

For months and weeks, for days and days,
she's gargled and she's practiced scales;
and goodness! but how much she weighs,
competing with the smaller whales.

Food's not a thing on which she stints;
her voice is loud, and very true.
Tonight, the portly diva hints,
she's going to sing us something new.

We wait. And Liberty begins
to draw a breath, to shape a note
that shakes her monumental chins
and stirs the dewlaps of her throat.

Imapatient in our seats we long
to hear those final notes take wing
in one triumphant burst of song.
At last! --- let the fat lady sing!
Loved the poem, but Hillary's not fat. ;)

I think the first 30 minutes after the polls close are the most gut wrenching, as the leaders flip every 30 seconds, with 1-5% of the votes in....

Ugh!

Our first major misstep: MSNBC called Virginia for Obama, then back tracked.

unusual. I stepped from the TV maybe 5 minutes ago, and MSNBC had McCain ahead 55-44 in Virginia, so they must have called it after, then retracted.

Will you all shut up until tomorrow morning? Give those hard working voting poll folks time to count the effing votes!

I'm watching the BBC, but they have Christopher Hitchens as a commentator.

If anyone could recommend a live feed (I am currently using a good computer) that doesn't have Christopher Hitchens on it in any way, then that might remove the fly from the honey.

Actually, it was in the wee hours of the US morning, and one of the other mods realized which thread it was that I was referring to, and already merged them.

But, yeah, you're right.... I should've linked the two of them in the report.
