Preempting The New Adventures of Old Christine, yikes, it's good my wife already voted, this could have changed her mind :)

I don't see any value for Obama. I'm not sure it will hurt, but I can't believe there will be many people who 1. Not be so pissed off that 2. they would watch and 2. would be swayed to vote for him.

Could this be Obama's Heidi Bowl?

The game is over.......Obama wins.

Now if he can just do half of what he has pledged, he will get 8 years.

I feel bad for Grampy, he's old, kinda senile, and can't remember *****...

I will still pay for a Grampy funeral flower...tossed by that "Black" daughter of his hypocritical Ass.......(that was Grass without the GR)

I think it's a mistake, myself. Anyone who hasn't decided by now is a grumpy person or is bored by politics. They'll be annoyed at having their favorite shows preempted.

On the other hand, Barack Obama seems to have handled this whole campaign pretty well so far. He's a liberal black man with very little experience who managed to oust a nearly annointed primary challenger, and it appears he is about to become President of the United States. Maybe I shouldn't be giving him advice. He seems to have done very well for himself.

Its just possible this will be the sort of thing that even convinces red state GOP voters to vote for Obama, perhaps even enough of them to get 60 Senate seats without depending on "Red Joe."

Who knows?

It has the advantage of never having been done before by a candidate who had a ghost of a chance of winning.

Heh, here's the most recent comment on the LAT page from "evilrichgirl":

1. The fact that this guy thinks we want to hear from him for a full 30 minutes in this media-age is proof enough for me that he's got a dictator's mentality. Fidel Castro, in his healthier days, was fond of long-winded government-sponsored broadcasts.

I think it's a good idea, assuming it's well-produced. As the article explains, he wants to run up his popular vote, so this blunt national ad will go out to non-battleground states. It will also be the topic of discussion the day after it airs.

CNN International played some speeches by both Obama & McCain from Ohio. They had it labeled at the "Closing Argument". Was this the speech? I don't have access to the other networks to know. I watched both speeches, and both were pretty good. I think Obama's was far better, but I voted for him so I admit I am biased.

I totally agree with Meadmaker. Us 'Mericans (especially the "real" Americans) hate being deprived of our mindless entertainment. <derail>When Arafat died, NBC cut into the last 10 minutes of some popular program to annouce it. They later announced the person who made the decision to break in was fired and they would show the same program the following night so people wouldn't miss it. </derail>

That was my thought.

Probably not as annoying as getting a robocall though.

You can always flip the channel. Is anything good getting preempted? No chance of preempting a sports event I hope.

They bought this time about a month ago, so they couldn't have known that the race would be a blowout by now. It might have tightened back up in the meantime.

Finally, there's something cheesy about a 30-minute commercial. One half expects Obama to be introduced by a pitchman in a loud sweater: "But wait, there's more! If you act by Nov. 4, you also get the foreign policy expertise of Sen. Joe Biden!

:D

I hope it's entertaining because a half-hour is a pretty long time.

People don't have long attention spans any more.

This is nothing short of brilliant. This is a whole half hour that Obama has to talk to the American People with out the Palin media filter. He gets to make his closing argument possibly drop a name or two on who will be on the cabinet and make people feel good about the choice. I am sure some version of the Canton speech will be made and that is the obvious end cap to his 2004 DNC speech. This will be a two cycle story also, screwing McCain again and running down the clock like a winning team pulling out a 7 min drive in the fourth quarter, it does not matter if their is a turnover at the end the damage is done.

I am voting for Obama, but I won't watch simply because I am sick and tired of the election, of both candidates, and just want to vote and get the damn thing over with, and I think I will not be the only one tuning out for this reason.
I hasten to add I think the reaction would be the same if it was McCain. People are just BURNT OUT at this point.

If Obama merely says "Please get out and vote early" one time, with only a fraction of the voters tuning in, then the annoying 30 min.s commercial will have been worth it IMO.
