It takes a bigger coordinated effort to do election fraud if paper ballots are involved. The Ohio machines lack the verification and transparency that makes it harder to tamper with the voting system and it's designed this way for no logical reason, other than to leave it easy to tamper with.

As they say, locks only keep out the honest people. So why even bother locking up your car or house?

You have a lot of chutzpah calling us naive to complain about the unaccountability of el;ectronic voting when you cite this example. In this case, you had rock-solid evidence that something was wrong. what evidence would you have that something was wrong if every bit of that evidence was on a hard drive which the state was, by law, barred from ever examining?

Think for a change. High-tech is not always high-value.
 
It will be very interresting to see the difference between exit pools and election result.

That is how you measure fraud in questionable democraties.

My country does still use paper and a pen on a string in the boot.

So does most of the civilized world. And, from what I have seen, the results are known just about as quickly as in our tricked-out mess.
 
McCain didn't guarantee victory (for himself). He guaranteed squeaker, and said he thinks he'll win.

Of course his guarantee of a squeaker is going to be another Fail on his part. He should avoid all election predictions at this point, being squeezed between not being able to admit his loss in advance and not being able to say anything credible to the contrary.

I should apologize. I shouldn't have used the word naive because when it comes down to it you and I are after the same thing and I agree with you. I just happen to be more of an abject cynic and see the problems in all forms of technology including pen and freaking paper.

My point is that any fiddling with the paper ballots will leave physical, examinable results and evidence of what happened.

I just happen to be more of an abject cynic and see the problems in all forms of technology including pen and freaking paper.

My point is that, there being no over-whelming need for electronic voting, and there being an easier way to diddle the results of electronic voting seamlessly, paper is the far safer and more reliable method.

Actually there is. You can piddle with paper far more easily than you can in an electronic machine done correctly. Correctly being the demonstrative word and so far no one has done it correctly.

Listening to the radio in Australia early this morning reporting on the US Presidential Elections - indeed McCain does seem to be narrowing Obama's lead in the polls. Do forum members think that the "squeaker victory" might be a possiblity, or is this so much GOP wishful thinking?
