Wmadoss: You could "just read the bible"....IF you had any confidence in that document as a collection of historically accurate stories.
Unfortunately, as we have been trying to show through this thread, no such confidence exists.

No confidence exists for a small percentage. Guys like Geisler and Dr. Hugh Ross try to bring those few to the Gospel through logic and Science.

Thank ehumm "god" I live in Sweden where 80% are agnostic/atheists.

And the majority of the world doesnt believe in christianity for that matter.

99% of the people do just read the bible, and that's all they need to obtain spiritual peace and joy from the bible. Geisler's books are written for the 1% who can't get peace that way.

In your dreams. Not even in the US Bible Belt do you have 99% believers. Much less out in the real world.

Hans

Do you have a source for those figures?

I cant post links yet, I think I need 15 posts but go to google and type in

christianity majority world believe
and click the first hit should be from adherents.com

Do you want a source for the percentage of swedens religious beliefs as well?

I can probabaly dig it up if you want to.

The wikipedia is also quite good search for Major religious groups.
Christianity is obviously the largest but it in itself is not a majority but holds 33%.

I guess I could have been a little clearer. What I was talking about was the people who read the bible and are believers. 99% in my opinion get peace and joy from it without putting every verse under a microscope. They know the main messages of the bible and thats all they really care about.

That's not to say that you can't analyze every verse and still find peace and joy in it. Guys like Geisler and Dr. Hugh Ross do just that.

http://adherents.com/Religions_By_Adherents.html

Christianity: 2.1 billion

Islam: 1.5 billion

Secular/Nonreligious/Agnostic/Atheist: 1.1 billion

Hinduism: 900 million

Chinese traditional religion: 394 million

Buddhism: 376 million

primal-indigenous: 300 million

African Traditional & Diasporic: 100 million

Sikhism: 23 million

Juche: 19 million

Spiritism: 15 million

Judaism: 14 million

Baha'i: 7 million

Jainism: 4.2 million

Shinto: 4 million

Cao Dai: 4 million

Zoroastrianism: 2.6 million

Tenrikyo: 2 million

Neo-Paganism: 1 million

Unitarian-Universalism: 800 thousand

Rastafarianism: 600 thousand

Scientology: 500 thousand

So approx. a third of the worlds population are christian, so they are the majority religion, but christians are not the majority of the worlds population. Does that make sense DOC??

OK, then I can't talk for the Bible Belt, but where I am, most people have reas the bible (they teach it in school), but most don't think much about it after that.

Actually, I have some difficulty understanding how that book can bring anybody peace and joy, but maybe that's just me.

This before we subtract the vast majority who are not True Christians :p .

And that "True Christian" comment is actually a very important point since at least a billion of that 2 billion belong to a denomination that do not accept the other billion are in fact "True Christians"!

If you have a table with a wobbly leg.

I was a believer. I read the Bible. That's a minority reason why I'm not a believer anymore. I cannot honestly say that the Bible itself gave me any peace or joy even when I was a believer. The community that grew up around it did, but not the thing itself.

And Geisler does not provide any science to back up his claims. He uses scientific words, but that's not the same thing.

I'm still interested in hearing what the other five reasons are:

Reason #4:
People were killed for not believing the bible. Why else would they have been killed if the bible wasn't true?

Reason #5:
It's horribly inconsistent and self-contradicting. I mean, if it was fiction, there would be a lot less plot holes.

Reason #6:
The very first edition has been found and it contained a note saying, "Seriously. I'm telling the truth. This thing, is like soo true, it's gospel!"

Reason #7:
Mark, luke and John, are all 4 letter words.
Matthew is is 7 letters. The average number of letters is 4.75. When you round this, you get 5 letters.
Truth is a 5 letter word!

Reason #8:
God emails everyone who believes with reassurances of the truth in the bible. If you are not receiving these emails, that's your fault. YOu need to believe to get on the list.

And Geisler does not provide any science to back up his claims. He uses scientific words, but that's not the same thing.

He does analyze the science (in pages 72-94 of the book mentioned in post #1) including the Big Bang, relativity, Cosmic Rebound Theory, Steven Hawking's Imaginary time, Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, etc. He even explains that if the Big Bang Theory was wrong that would not prove the universe was eternal and he gives reasons why.
