Has the Large Hadron Collider Destroyed the World Yet?

Give it time.

The serious universe-cancelling collisions are weeks away, as I understand the process and schedule.

As for me I'm racking up my cards and living large!:)

Yeah, you should see my credit card bills!

Good thing I don't plan on paying them ;)

Has the Large Hadron Collider Destroyed the World Yet?

I suppose the only correct answer you can ever receive for that question is "no".

The only bad thing about the entire world being destroyed is that I can't have the cool epitaph on my gravestone stating I died falling into a black hole. That would be so cool.

Yup. We're now living in the new universe that the LHC created after it was activated.

I'm calling this "Last wednesdayism."

Convert! Or the LHC will use you to feed its particle stream!

(and like any good deity it demands virgin sacrifices. Lots of virgin sacrifices. That's why its staffed by scientists)

Yes, it in fact destroyed the universe. But it simultaneously generated and exactly similar parallel universe, so its all good. For now.

In the new post LHC universe do we still have to pay our CC bills from the last universe? Is there a Law of Universal Conservation of Debt that someone failed to mention?

I think the reason that any black holes that are created when particles collide either in the collider or with the Earth do not destroy the Earth is that the black holes are so small they evaporate before they get a chance to grow.

But that is only my guess, I have not been told the answer. Can anyone give me a better answer?

In case anyone does not understand why a small black hole would evaporate I will tell you. The diameter of such a hole would be very small. Much smaller than the size of a proton. Since it is impossible to state exactly where a particle is, that is you cannot state that it is in fact within the black hole, the particle can escape the black hole. So the black hole losses mass.

Thank you.... how profound. I am now so much more enlightened.

Yes, that's correct.

Correct, more or less. However the same logic (were you to follow it through quantitatively) would tell you that you cannot form a black hole in the first place with the LHC (or any conceivable particle accelerator). The only reason it's considered a possibility is that there are a class of theories in which the strength of gravity is strongly modified at short distances - it becomes very strong very quickly. But even in those theories it's still the case that the black holes would evaporate very rapidly.

Well, there are a few other reasons why the black holes created at the LHC don't destroy the Earth. Firstly, there aren't any collisions yet, so there's no possibility of creating any. Secondly, even when they start collisions they will be at lower energy than existing colliders and therefore won't do anything new. Finally, once they have actually strated collisions and ramped the energy up, there's still almost no chance of them creating any black holes.

To find out if this is all true, visit the site in the OP some time next year.

So there is some chance it could happen. AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH

With all these black holes rapidly evaporating it won´t be long till the ceiling at CERN resembles a chimney sweep´s forehead.

Personally, I prefer animalistic orgies in my name with no messy bloodletting. Virgins should stay safely at home or in the lab where they belong.

There is a similar site that you can use for verification of the worlds destruction here here

the XML comments on both pages are a little fun
