Obama? Not really. One of the side effectects of the internet is that Obama need not involve himself in the ah less clean side of campaining. Plently of completely unconnected people to take care of that.

Yeah. I didn't approve of the 100 years smearing when it started. I actually opened a thread about it on this forum called "the first swift boat ad of the new season". I don't approve of the McCain campaign accusing Obama of this.
However.... This is politics. My personal preferences aside about things like evidence based belief aside, I have to make judgements about which tactics are good or bad.
The 100 years smear played well. The media didn't have a cow and call it unfair and make a story out of it like this. All it got was a mention on factcheck.org about it being crap.
I think the lipstick thing is a good tactic because it seems obvious out of context. The media response of "ZOMG< WE HAVE TO DEFEND OBAMA" further makes the public less trustful of the press. Recent polls show the public thinks the media pushes for Obama more than McCain.
So there two lines of though here. I can be self-righteous about honesty in politics (hold your laughter). I can also discuss the effectiveness of the spin, smears, lies, darn lies, and fairy tales and put aside my personal preferences about honestly and altruism.
So the one side says "my person belief is you shouldn't bend the truth".
The other side says "aside from what i believe, you should do this if you want to win".
So yes, I do think exactly what I said. Sorta.

That rumor on DU seems to have something to it. Not out there yet, though, and not what was speculated (fortunately.) But what they can find out about it, if true, will not be good at all for John McCain.

I don't know where you have been, but I've known several guys who were never really "right" after Vietnam. They are just not that uncommon, or weren't in past years. Many have slipped this mortal coil by now, though.

You know what's weird? I have no idea what John McCain sounds like. I cannot place his voice. I'm an avid news junkie and have talk radio or rolling news TV on pretty much 24 hours a day. But I couldn't pick his voice out of a line up. I couldn't satirise it. I don't even know what accent he has.
Obama is on the news over here (in the UK) all the time. Every day. The same is true, more recently, of Sarah Palin. But McCain's speeches, and even his soundbites, feel like they have gone almost entirely unremarked upon on the British broadcast media.
Maybe it's just me, but in any case: that's disconcerting.

I had similar opinions. I thought McCain would be better than this, but those two ads make him look really bad, in my opinion.
And I don't buy the line of "He's fighting back." either. I have been extremely critical of the stupid attacks on Sarah Palin based on babies, or sex, or anything but policy, but those attacks didn't actually come from Obama or the Democratic Party. Our side apparently has plenty of mindless idiots with nothing better to do than talk about stupid stuff, but there was no, "I'm Barack Obama and I approved this message." attached to them. He's fighting back against straw men.
I think the last couple of days haven't been good for him.

Maybe the media want him to win and are waiting until he says something that actually puts him in a good light and makes him sound like an orator of note.
You have time to bicycle up to Edinburgh for a good bottle of Scotch.
What happened to McCain - in my real opinion - is that in the 2000 race when Bushes people pre-swift-boated him in South Carolina he needed to -but could not - face/deal with what had happened and he switched back to surival mode. And is still stuck there.
This is the long version of what I normally just refer to as "he bent over for Bush"
