Obama: Lipstick on a Pig

I'm honestly not sure. It's probably a flaw in my character. I'm not sure if I'm pure enough to be an Obama supporter. :)

I don't find it all that big a deal. I'm not sure why anyone is getting worked up by it one way or another. I think we are far too knee-jerk when it comes to politics.

OMG, Obama doesn't wear a flag lapel pin!!!!! The horror. If Obama had actually meant to compare Palin to a pig it would be, "oh BFD" to me.

America is so god damn PC. We are so easily offended. It's embarrassing.

I couldn't agree more.

Other than the "obviousness" of Obama's meaning, I agree with you wholeheartedly. I think it is McCain that is making this into a huge deal and that's what upsets me. It takes us away from the real issues.

I agree that we are too PC.

More fake outrage from the Republicans. Give me a break. McCain has used the very same line, including once about Hillary's health-care policy, so how can they be sooooo upset when Obama uses it? It's a made-up controversy meant to get people's backs up about "poor, victimized, maligned Sarah Palin." Somehow it's supposed to make me, as a woman, think that Obama is sexist and vote, against everything else I stand for and believe in, for McCain/Palin. Not gonna happen.

Perhaps McCain and Palin are going to introduce a whole new raft of PC dos and don'ts.

And women wouldn't fall for that anymore than men would buy a particular brand of beer just because of a TV ad with sexy women.

It's insulting to think that we can be manipulated. But then George Bush won re-election. Perhaps it is the thinking that we can't be manipulated that is the problem.

On the other hand. Talking points about women not being stupid enough to fall for this kind of manipulation because Palin's position is antithetical to feminism seem a good strategy to combat such manipulation.

BTW, did you have to repeat the "everything else I stand for" talking point? It was a really good post up and until that point.

The talk du jour today on the cable shows seems to be Obama's lipstick-on-a-pig comment, which McCain's surrogates have criticized as disgraceful and sexist for which they have asked Obama to apologize.

Here is what Obama said:

Senator Barack Obama said:
OBAMA: Let's just list this for a second. John McCain says he's about change, too. Except -- and so I guess his whole angle is, "Watch out, George Bush, except for economic policy, health-care policy, tax policy, education policy, foreign policy, and Karl Rove-style politics. We're really gonna shake things up in Washington." That's not change. That's just calling some -- the same thing, something different. But you know, you can -- you know, you can put lipstick on a pig; it's still a pig.

It seems that Palin's "pit bull with lipstick" comment is what invited the interpretation that Obama was referring to Palin as a pig. But it is clear from the context that Obama was talking about McCain's policies -- which (in the mind of Obama) are really Bush policies dressed up in a new "McCain" guise. Interpreting Palin as a pig with lipstick also ignores the metaphors of the expression; Palin would necessarily be the lipstick applied to McCain and not be the pig herself.

Anyway, I thought I'd post on this because the media is somehow unaware that such an expression has been widely used in the past few months in reference to McCain's campaign -- long before Palin was announced as McCain's running mate. First we have this remark by Mark Kornblau:

Mark Kornblau said:
"Mark Kornblau, a former spokesman for ex-Sen. John Edwards's (D-N.C.) presidential campaign, said that strategy will prove effective for Obama in the current political environment. 'Barack Obama is coming right out of the gate with a strong, straightforward argument for change from the failed George Bush economy,' Kornblau said in an e-mail. 'Meanwhile, John McCain has to put a lot of lipstick on that proverbial pig as he makes the case for four more years.' " (The Hill, 10 June 2008, p. 6, via LexisNexis)

And then a month later from the DNC itself:

Damien LaVera said:
"Maybe John McCain should call his latest tour the 'Lipstick on a Pig' tour because no matter how many shades of lipstick he tries, in the end it's still a pig,” said DNC spokesman Damien LaVera." ("From the Road," by John Bentley, July 7, 2007, 9:22 am, via link)

Democratic National Committee said:
"When John McCain rolls out his 'Jobs First' economic tour in Denver today, he'll have a lot of explaining to do to the American people. Senator McCain, according to the Wall Street Journal, 'isn't expected to say anything new' and will only 'repackage proposals he has already outlined,' the equivalent of putting lipstick on a pig." (Statement issued by the DNC, PR Newswire, 7 July 2008, 3:50 pm GMT, via LexisNexis)

And then after this, the expression was picked up and used by bloggers:

Adam S. said:
"Honestly, trying to make McCain look like a good candidate is like putting lipstick on a pig. He looks completely unnatural when he’s speaking off a teleprompter, he makes several major gaffes a week, and he’s consistently playing catchup on Obama on all of the issues." -- Adam S, July 22nd, 2008, 4:13 pm, via link)

Shaun Mullen said:
"McCain's attempts to put lipstick on his pig of a campaign have been so inadequate that they border on the pathetic, and a consequence has been an inextricable slide into the only alternative he and his advisers believe to be available - Rovian smear politics." (Shaun Mullen, "Why Is John McCain So Desperate," The Moderate Voice, July 29, 2008, 8:44 am EST, via LexisNexis)

All of this has exactly the same thought as Obama's recent remark, and show that Obama was simply following what other Democrats have said before him. Obama also used the lipstick-on-pig metaphor earlier to refer to policy in Iraq:

Senator Barack Obama said:
"I think that both General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker are capable people who have been given an impossible assignment," Sen. Barack Obama said yesterday in a telephone interview. "George Bush has given a mission to General Petraeus, and he has done his best to try to figure out how to put lipstick on a pig." (Washington Post, 14 September 2007, A13, via link)

Finally, it is worth noting that McCain himself used the expression to refer to Hilary's health care plan being a recycled version of the Clinton administration plan:

Senator John McCain said:
"Mr. McCain also criticized the Democratic plans, but his comments were more in passing and were far less barbed. But when asked about Mrs. Clinton his speech, he said her proposal was ''eerily'' similar to the plan she came up with in 1993, when she headed a health care reorganization effort during her husband's administration. 'I think they put some lipstick on a pig,'' he said, ''but it's still a pig.' (New York Times, 12 October 2007, A20, via LexisNexis)

He was talking about policy, just like Obama. But I don't recall anyone criticizing McCain for making a sexist comment about Hilary Clinton.

The media loves blowing up these manufactured controversies.

It's insulting to think that we can be manipulated. But then George Bush won re-election. Perhaps it is the thinking that we can't be manipulated that is the problem.
I agree, and that's my fear - that they're using all this fake outrage and manipulation to their advantage and it just might work...again! I just meant that it wasn't going to work on me.

BTW, did you have to repeat the "everything else I stand for" talking point? It was a really good post up and until that point.
Didn't realize it was a talking point. It's almost exactly the first thing I said the very moment I heard about Palin's nomination - that I wasn't going to vote for a woman who was the antithesis of everything I believe in just because she's a woman - so I don't think it's even something that I unconsciously picked up as a talking point. But if it is, at least it's a true one!

Fair enough.

Thanks.

He wasn't calling Palin a pig.

And when he said...
Barack Obama said:
"She’s got the kitchen sink flying and the china flying, the buffet is coming at me … constant distractions, these petty, trivial, slash and burn, back and forth, tit for tat politics," he said during a whistle-stop rally in Downington, Pa.
...well, it's just a coincidence that he never accused his other opponents of throwing the china at him.

And when he said...
Barack Obama said:
"You challenge the status quo and suddenly the claws come out."
...that was right after he'd seen The X-Men.

And when he said...
Barack Obama said:
"I understand that Senator Clinton, periodically when she’s feeling down, launches attacks as a way of trying to boost her appeal."
...(emphasis mine), you may think that he was making a sly reference to menstrual cycles and PMS, but you'd just be displaying your ignorance and over-sensitivity.

Who wants to see Obama Vrs. Palin: "tit for tat?"

I haven't heard the old coot speak of much of anything else since then. I think he wants people upset about cosmetic crap so they don't look at the pig in a poke he has been trying to sell us. He is in his element right now. It doesn't take a lot of thought to put legs on this attack dog. That is good for McCain, because he seems not to have all his marbles anymore.

Admit it, Republicans, the man has been obsessing over a non-issue. That does not speak well of his mental state.

I'm beginning to agree with those that almost immediately said this was a brilliant political move.

Lipstick on a pig? Shame on you for making fun of Palin
Against Stem Cell? Shame on you for making fun of Palin's kid

Irony? Sarah Palin has far surpassed Obama now as a celebrity and deserves her own Take Away the Celebrity ad from McCain, but wait, I just saw another Obama celebrity ad by McCain last night.

Hear any talk about McCains stance on issues from anyone other then Obama? Nope. Damn liberal media.

Brilliant political move? I'm beginning to agree.

Will it work? I thought McCain would win months ago mainly due to scaring the **** out of people regarding terrorism with a minor boost due to hidden racism. Looks like Mc won't have to play the terrorism card until later in the game.

Americans will vote in McCain. We deserve everything we get.

I think the old coot's behavior since the comment just illustrates that the accusations that he has an extreme anger control problem are spot-on. The dude just has no self-control, going off on a rant and demanding an apology.

You're going to trust this ranting thug with the nuclear trigger? Yeesh!

Obama is not PC enough for you, then, Beeps?

I see you and McCain have something in common. You both think women are airheads.

Enough:

That's all she is, really. She has no bright fresh ideas. She's a babe. Eye candy. Guys are falling in behind her because she is charming.

If she looked like Nancy Pelosi she would still be a small-town school board member.
