Obama: Lipstick on a Pig

The crowd thought it was directed at Palin as they started chanting "No more pit bulls". How could the crowd get it so wrong?

Was their goal simply to malign Obama? Were they attempting to drive women further from Obama towards McCain? Was it a part of an overall strategy or an act of desperation? Does this speak to the condition of the campaign?
It's been said that those who love sausage and respect the law shouldn't see either being made. Given that the law is made by politicians perhaps politics should be added to the mix. I swore off this forum out of respect for skepticsm. Silly me to come back.

You win Upchurch. McCain is a liar. And I'll add a rat bastard. A pox on him.

Yeah, cause obviously they couldn't be referring to a lipsticked pig… noooo…. Must be just lipstick, y'know, just on its own. In space. Or Maybe "no more pitbulls" was referring to a desire to have dog control as well as gun control on the Dems radar…

Honestly Upchurch...

I'm really surprised at the number of people who claim it wasn't a reference at all to Palin, more of a incidental common figure of speech. With how tightly orchestrated all formal remarks are, especially during the final stretch of a campaign, there is no way something with the word 'lipstick' is off-the-cuff. My guess is that it was very deliberate, and stated in nearly the exact same context that McCain delivered it against Hillary so as to insulate Obama from criticism (fail so far 'cause we all like a good catfight). Anyway, no big deal, I still like Obama and this thing is gonna blow over in a few days.

I also think we're focusing too much on McCain and Obama as victims. Nobody's talking about the pigs. C'mon people, what about the pigs? It's morally reprehensible! They didn't ask for this.

McCain's ad stating "Barack Obama on: Sarah Palin", which was followed by Obama talking about McCain, is factually incorrect. It is, by definition, a lie.

The only logical conclusion is that whoever created the advert considers Palin to be a pig.

I've heard of all those, actually. I just didn't feel like it.

And to answer your question, I wouldn't do that simply because I don't want to drive for a day and a half on the off-chance that, even though I've had no real opportunity to use the word that I can recall over the last eight years, I'll somehow be able to find one in the short time I would be in the team's company.

It's a matter of logistics and statistics.

The only logical conclusion is that whoever created the advert considers Palin to be a pig.

Agreed. Everyone knows the guilty dog barks the loudest.

Why does the McCain campaign think Palin is a pig?

Yes.

I can't for the life of me see how. Unless of course we are all capable of knowing for a fact another person's state of mind.

I'm curious though, why do you feel the need to lie? No, I'm not talking about this particular issue but the fact that we all lie.

I'm honestly not excusing McCain and his actions. It's just that I have little respect for gotcha politics especially when it comes to things we should know better about. People acted shocked (shocked I tell you) when they found out Clinton lied to a grand jury about a personal affair. BFD.

How do you know when a politician is lying? He's moving his lips. Assuming McCain did lie, is it really a big deal? If I were Obama I would absolutely make a point about the disengenous nature of McCain's behavior but I wouldn't spend much time on it.

If you can read the guys state of mind. You assume that there are no other possibilities. I think it likely McCain and crew know better but I don't know that as a fact and neither do you. And neither does UW. Further the question was meant for rhetorical purposes. You and I both know that. Assuming McCain sat down one day and rubbed his hands together thinking up ways to lie the answer to UW's question doesn't really tell us anything. John McCain wants to be president. Duh. And Clinton wanted to avoid embarrassment and protect his family. Is it ok to lie to a grand jury or lie about a person's motivation during a presidential campaign? No. Is it a.) really earth shattering and b.) Do we really know McCain's state of mind?

Had UW simply said, I think McCain knows that what he is saying about Obama is a lie I wouldn't have responded.

Did McCain lie? I honestly don't know. It's not the first and it won't be the last and it won't be the most egregious if it is true.

I sincerely want Obama to win. Even so, I wouldn't engage in such silly rhetoric and demand to know why a politician told a lie (eek) to achieve that goal. It's juvenile and pointless and assumes that our leaders aren't humans who are capable of making mistakes. I wouldn't even demand to know why Edwards felt the need to lie and I would be more than willing to vote for him knowing that he did lie.

It's not even aimed at McCain. Here it is in context:

He's actually referring to McCain's policies. This is absolutely crystal-clear in context.

This may sound grossly naive, but: Is it really possible that the McCain campaign could get away with such an obvious and easily-disprovable lie? Really?

I think it obvious, given the context of the speech, that Obama was referring to McCain's policies. That and the history of politicians on both sides, including McCain, using the same exact phrase. It's unfortunate that McCain's team decided to twist the meaning and use it in a political advertising. Obama's meaning is on tape and in the public domain for everyone to see and has nothing to do with understanding his mental state. McCain's spin on it was untrue. Call it a lie or call it politics, I don't care, but I really hope that Obama can focus on the short-falls in the McCain/Palin policies (there's enough to talk about) and McCain can keep from trying to make the election about perceived sexism.

If y'all can't see its a reference to policy and decisions, there is no hope for you.

I wonder how much hue and cry would there have been had he said "polish a turd?" Would they have said he was likening Palin to fecal matter?

Seriously, GOP internal polls no doubt show that their bounce will be gone next week this time, and are desperate for anything negative to stick to Senator Obama. For his part, Senator Obama has been avoiding following suit, which is decent, but I think misguided.

I saw one where McCain was asked that by an older woman and he laughed it off and changed the subject. What clip are you talking about?

I heard it in a clip on the radio show "On the Media" many months ago... I'll try to track it down.

Redtail was just being helpful. If RadioactiveMan wants to snidely insult black people, Redtail just gave him the name of a whole group so he doesn't have to go one by one.

There's a difference between saying 'niggardly' and being misinterpreted and crucified and going up to black people and saying " niggardly, ha ha you can't complain because I didn't actually say '******'" as RM is fantasizing about.
Apparently you don't comprehend what I mean when I say, "I don't get many chances to call someone stingy," and, "the next change I get to use it".

Do you need some help in deciphering the meaning of those phrases?

I think it obvious, given the context of the speech, that Obama was referring to McCain's policies.
I'm honestly not sure. It's probably a flaw in my character. I'm not sure if I'm pure enough to be an Obama supporter. :)

It's unfortunate that McCain's team decided to twist the meaning and use it in a political advertising.
I don't find it all that big a deal. I'm not sure why anyone is getting worked up by it one way or another. I think we are far too knee-jerk when it comes to politics.

OMG, Obama doesn't wear a flag lapel pin!!!!! The horror. If Obama had actually meant to compare Palin to a pig it would be, "oh BFD" to me.

America is so god damn PC. We are so easily offended. It's embarrassing.

Call it a lie or call it politics, I don't care, but I really hope that Obama can focus on the short-falls in the McCain/Palin policies (there's enough to talk about) ...
I couldn't agree more.

I'm pretty sure what I heard was this:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/debra-condren/beat-the-bitch-straight-_b_72698.html

But on the radio they had edited the clip down so that right after the question, he says, "that's an excellent question..." Even with the laughter in there, it doesn't reflect well on him or his supporters.

And of course, there's also McCain's famous use of the "c" word. And how could Fred Thompson think it was a good idea to talk about strippers that McCain used to date in Florida?

America is so god damn PC. We are so easily offended. It's embarrassing.
BTW, this ****ing thread is embarrassing. It should be retitled to whaaaaaa.... or pehraps the ever loveable kids in a sandbox.

My daddy was a prisoner of war.
My daddy was a community organizer.
My daddy can beat up your daddy.
My daddy is nicer than your daddy.

You know, the important stuff.

Rince, repeat.

"What do we want?"
"Equal rights for swine!"
"When do we want it?"
"Now!"

"What do we want?"
"Equal rights for swine!"
"When do we want it?"
"Now!"

"What do we want?"
"Equal rights for swine!"
"When do we want it?"
"Now!"

I find it hard to believe that so much emphasis is placed on positioning and so little on policies - from either side. No wonder so few people bother to vote.

And of course, there's also McCain's famous use of the "c" word. And how could Fred Thompson think it was a good idea to talk about strippers that McCain used to date in Florida?
Yes, because leaders shouldn't be human. We all know they swear in private but we pretend that they don't because we are not honest enough to accept the truth. We need to be patronized and treated as children. We need our leaders to act like ride operators at Disneyland always smilling and blowing hot air up our rear ends because god knows we can't be treated as adults.

Oh, BTW, Hillary is a bitch and so was Rand for that matter. Get over it.
