No, I think an atheist discovering the truth about the universe would find it enlightening and fascinating. On the other hand if you cam from the viewpoint that there was a God discovering the truth of the formation of the universe would be far more than irritating, potentially devastating.

Can I re-iterate my offer to buy you Big Bang by Dr Singh? You need it more than I thought you did; you clearly don't even grasp the most basic, primary-school-level explanations of what the BBT actually says.

Duh! That is the whole idea.... I knew that when I was a year or ten old and read 'my first book about space' Note this doesn't mean I understood any of it at 10 years of age, nor that this answers any questions about the existence of a God. But 10 years old I understood that there was a model of the universe that said it all came from a single point, from where time and space came to be. You were free to believe if a god made that happen or just say, we cannot know what came 'before' that (note before is not a good word, as there was no 'before' there was no time)

I guess your 'most people' would need a little more education.

Practically all basic explanations I have seen liken the universe to the inside of a balloon. The exception being Genesis. Perhaps that is all Doc had read.

Actually, the surface of a balloon. It's a nice, neat two-dimensional analogy that really helps to explain the idea of expanding three-dimensional space.

Now that you have learnt something new about the Big Bang... (And, I assume, nothing new about Genesis)...

How has this affected your assessment of the similarity between the scientific account and Genesis?

This discussion made me reread Genesis chapter 1 for the first time in years.

Actually it does make *some* sense...a few things do agree with science (a lot of others do not)

I also learned a few new things. As I read on the end. We are not supposed to eat 'green stuff' as that is only for all creeping animals.. But we can eat seeds and fruits... poor lions.. they are condemned to spinach. And poor Popeye no more spinach for you! Give it to the crawling animals.

Yup. It really is irritatingly difficult to wrap one's head around too.

But it's where the evidence leads. That's the way science goes.

People in general. I'd say at least 90% (and that's being conservative) don't realize that modern science theorizes that all matter and "all space" did not exist before the the so called Big Bang. They might have known about all matter coming out of the Big Bang. But over 90% percent (according to my estimate) do not know that all "space" began at the theorized Big Bang also. In other words, I think it would be a big surprise to them to realize there was no "space" before the Big Bang event according to Big Bang theory.

No, I didn't realize there was no "empty space" before the theorized Big Bang until I read it in the book "I Don't Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist".

I recall reading about the big bang and the concept of space back at school in the 60s. When decade did you go school DOC, the 1860s?

What year did you drop out of high school? I know a lot of people who dropped out of high school but later studied for the GED and became very educated. I know it can be discouraging to feel you're at a disadvantage but invest some time and some hard work and you can not only get back on track but start getting ahaed.

Some would say that this evidence leads to a Creator. For example the famous scientist and Nobel Prize winner George Smoot said:

"There is no doubt that a parallel exists between the big bang as an event and the Christian notion of creation from nothing."

Actually, I have a college degree, and did take a physics course in high school and an astronomy course in college.

Some would be wrong.
