So Now We Know Why the Anti-Palin Effort Was So Desperate

Liberal reactions are starting to pour in and the jaws have dropped there as well:

TNR:

Several moderate-Democrat friends of mine have been emailing--few if any would ever vote for McCain--but all agree that Palin was very strong. The more liberal among them are a little panicked.

Ezra Klein:

Over the past week, Palin had begun looking like a character from Twin Peaks. Tonight, she looked like an up-and-coming Republican politician. It was an auspicious debut, the sort of address that would be judged a success if she were a newcomer keynoting the convention. She landed clean punches, temporarily silenced some of her critics, and retold John McCain's story with a keen sense for the drama of his experience.

Both those articles go on to say that the speech lacked x and y and z, which is fair from the standpoint of the authors.

But nobody is talking about how Palin flailed. She nailed it like Kerry Strug. Palin must now be considered the future of the Republican Party.

Mark Halperin of Time:

Sarah Palin
Grade: A+

Legitimate criticism:

She read the teleprompter like a champ, with fine, varied pacing and conversational projection.

As everybody knows, all these speeches are scripted by speechwriters. The point is legitimate, however; Mrs Palin will have to show us that she can handle herself with the press and in the debates.

But... it was a heck of a speech.

I thought it was good. Not a homerun, but there were a couple memorable lines, and she looked like she belongs in the big time. Call it a double. It was good enough to force the media to take her seriously, and that was the make-or-break threshold. She still has some important hurdles. She has to do as well in interviews as she does in prepared remarks.

She's a good speaker.

That doesn't justify the thread title's handwave of her continued lying about her record, but she is a good speaker.

That was the "generic masculine speech" that was written before she was even picked, yes?

And it had a couple of good lines? Truly she is the future of the Republican Party.

So, certainly that must have triggered the "desparate anti-Palin effort". The reson people don't like her must have nothing to do with the fact that she's a fundie sleazebag and everything to do with the time traveller who came from the future to warn us that she could read an autocue.

Do you know her personally? Are you attacking her or her beliefs?

"Desperate?"

Really, if there's anything "desperate" in the attacks on Palin, it's the way her supporters here (really, GOP supporters who would feel compelled to defend whoever the candidate happened to be) are trying to simply dismiss any and all criticism by calling it "desperate."

Hand-wave all you like, it's not going to change the fact that the woman holds a number of policy positions that are completely and totally at odds with the views of the organization sponsoring this website, and by extension the supporters of that organization who post here.

Call the "anti-Palin effort" "desperate" if you like. Palin is still in favor of teaching creationism as science, and I will continue to attack her for it.

Call it "Palin Derangement Syndrome" if you want. Palin is still hostile to civil rights, and I will continue to attack her for it.

Call it "sexism" if you like. Palin still supports unscientific, counter-productive abstinence-only education, and I will continue to attack her for it.

Call it whatever you like. I don't want Palin, or anyone who shares her political positions, to be in any political position higher than dogcatcher. I don't want to live in her grand vision of America - where students are given a substandard Bible-based education, where women do not have control over their own destinies, where homosexuals are criminalized and relegated to third-class citizens.

As long as she holds these positions, you're going to see her attacked, ridiculed, and lambasted as the fundamentalist theocrat-wannabe that she is.

That's just the way it is. Deal with it.

ETA: If she is the future of the Republican Party, then I can only agree with the Log Cabin Republicans, who say that the Republican Party is "on the wrong side of history."

I think "a round of applause" doesn't come close to cutting it here.

Huzzah for Cleon!

ETA: Now, as some of you may or may not know (I am, afterall, a very minor poster here, not that many will notice me popping my head up above the barracades etc.) but I'm a stinking liberal commie pinko (I'm a democratic Socialist).

I don't like McCain, and I firmly believe that Obama really is the better candidate based on his political views. I don't think he's a GREAT candidate but you know, lesser of two evils and all that. However, as much as I dislike his socio-political opinions, and think the man is wrong quite a lot of the time, he doesn't scare me. PALIN scares me. Not because she's so super awesome, but because she is completely, 100%, no holds barred FUNDIE about some of her beliefs. Yes, I decry her right wing views (as far as I can find out what they are, every site I've been to to try and find a comprehensive list is a bit...lacking) and yes, I don't like that she's in the GOP, and YES I would rather, if the option were available to me, much rather vote for Obama/Biden due to McCain as well, because let's face it he will be the pres if that ticket wins, but seriously, how on EARTH is supporting a woman like THIS any good?

Ok, you (in case anyone wonders, not aimed at anyone specifically) are a conservative. Great. Agree with her political views on the economy to your hearts content. Tell everyone she's right on the money about immigration, or whatever other hot-button issue your soundbite politics is covering this week, but do not tell me (and I'm using a general me here, it felt more applicable than "us") that you are a sceptic who is avowed to stop creationism et al. being taught in one breath and support someone like THIS with your next.

Just admit it, McCain dropped the sodding ball.

She got in a few good licks, like when she compared her experience as mayor to Obama's experience as community organizer as being similar "except for having actual responsibilities". Well, that's a pretty good sound byte. Of course, she's comparing her political experience to a job Obama had before he even went to law school (a place Palin has never been).

Yeah, just like Kerry Strug. One spectacular twirl, then somebody had to carry her around for the rest of the time.

Ditto and nominated.

The only think that I would have to add to this is the "liberal media meme". Aren't reps sick and tired of hearing that?

Outside of the buybull thumping it is one of the general over riding issues why I can not get myself to accept anything the republican party (as a whole) says. There is something decidedly nefarious about the whole "liberal media" smear and speaks of McCarthyism at full tilt.

Is she? I thought she sounded shrill.

But then, I guess it all depends upon what you're used to.

ETA: Oh and she kept saying 'cars'. Maybe it's the accent.

I didn't say "great." She was competent and engaging. She definitely has room to improve, and she definitely has the skills to do so.

Some fact checking here. The first one really made me clutch my pearls.

Now I've seen it all. JREF forum members supporting a creationist/global warming denialist.

I know what you mean, but to tell the truth, we have JREF forum members who are blatantly racist, who support 9/11 Truth conspiracy theories, and who like Kevin Smith movies. Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad.

The media thought she'd act like a deer caught in the headlights and found out she is more like a polar bear protecting her cubs. She beat on Obama like he was a rented mule.

All in all a great coming out on to the national stage.

Chris Mathews has talked about Obama giving him a tingling feeling running up his leg. After last night I think he probably has a tinkling feeling running down his leg.
