Sarah Palin!

Nice to know McCain will have a VP who understands the "Vice" part of it.

I shudder to think of what Bill Clinton would have tried with Madame Sarkozy though.
Not that I would blame either of them. Carla Sarzoky nee Bruni is one Hot lady.

I looked it up Wasilla was a town of about 5000 when she was mayor.

McCain will be older than Reagan was the day he is inaugurated. And he chooses a VP whose credentials are even thinner than Obamas?

Well, he always had an eye for good looking women. :eye-poppi

I assume most Hillary supporters are pro-choice. Are they going to switch to an antiabortion ticket to get a woman into the VP slot? I sure hope not.

Thinner than Obama?

She's been Governor of Alaska for two years, just as long as Bill was Governor of Arkansass before getting defeated in his first bid for reelection.

From an AP article:

The 44-year-old Republican, Alaska's first female governor, arrived at the Capitol in 2006 on an ethics reform platform after defeating two former governors in the primary and general elections. On Friday she was ready to leap to the national stage as GOP presidential candidate John McCain's surprise choice for running mate, according to two senior campaign officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement was pending.

With ethics the centerpiece of her campaign, Palin defeated incumbent Gov. Frank Murkowski, who served 22 years in the U.S. Senate before winning the governor's seat in 2002.

Her task didn't seem any easier in the general election, but she handily beat Tony Knowles, a popular Democrat who already served two terms as governor.

I googled it, and couldn't find anything except the assertion that he said this in the blog that was referenced. No confirmation, and no record of him saying it, or an apology that I could find. Belief in what appears on a blog is pretty thin ice, I think.

There was also an assertion that the press was covering up what McCain said and not priting it because it was too ugly. But no links to any where it WAS reported; only very few rumor that it wasn't. It's a case of saying "Obama doesn't deny beating his wife." and then saying the press is covering up for him.

I'd like to see a solid link to where he said this. I'm not saying he didn't, but I won't believe it until I see a reliable source. I'm saying it would be out of character to say that, plus, as I said earlier, Chelsea Clinton isn't ugly at all. I think McCain knows this.

Can you provide a real link?

Towards the bottom. Plus McCain apologized. If he didn't make the joke, why apologize to the Clintons?

McCain's age and health have generally not been seriously discussed over the past year. I wonder how that will change with Palin as his running mate.

After thinking about it more this afternoon, I still see her as a bad choice. It is a ballsy one though. She does help McCain with some social conservatives. She may be an asset on energy and fiscal responsibility. Her inexperience completely hamstrings McCain's strongest argument against Obama though, especially concerning foreign policy and terrorism. McCain is now going to have to convince people to vote for him based on his position on the issues. That brings Bush back into play on many things. It'll be interesting to see how he lays out his positions and policies over the coming week.

If Obama hadn't made it so already, it certainly makes this election one that will always be remembered.
Interesting comment. I've started a thread about memorable elections.

I've been hearing a "Harriet Miers" meme going around the liberal pit of the internets.

Still, I am not going to bother thinking about how many idiots this will net McCain.

She does nothing for me, I'm moving on to things that actually matter, not "might" matter.

I can't find a link to an old article about it, but here is the Boston Globe's quoting of the apology ...

How is a joke about Chelsea being ugly sexist? I mean she bloomed nicely, but man she used to be an eyesore.

Nation of crybabies just waiting to be offended by something, I swear.
Any joke about a woman's physical appearance is pretty much sexist. But mostly, it is just tasteless.

Attacking the president's kids is always considered a low blow. At least, Harry Truman thought so.

Yes, A joke told 10 years ago tells you everything about a man.

He apologized, I assume the Clintons accepted his apology.

It's been ten years.

Did you want to talk about Monica next?

Lowering expectations is how George Bush won the debates with Al Gore. He started off by saying "Golly gee whiz, I sure I do against such a smart feller" and then, when he didn't look like a complete idiot, he was declared the 'winner'.
You are exactly right and GWB learned it from Reagan. I recall an early debate when the reporters were giddy with amazement and awe because Reagan knew the term MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction).

No, she is not fair game because she did not choose to be a public figure. This would be true if she were eighty. You don't attack non-combatants.

Agreed. Also, it just so lacks class. It doesn't speak well of a person's character.

Interesting. Palin is already making a play for Clinton's voters. I didn't think it would be so soon or so obvious.
It was rightly noted in Denver this week that Hillary Clinton left 18 million cracks in the highest, hardest glass ceilings in American,” Palin told the crowd in Dayton, Ohio. “But, it turns out that the women of America aren’t finished yet, and we can still shatter that glass ceiling once and for all.

Also interesting, Obama, Biden and Clinton have praised the choice. What else could they do? I suspect the polite fomalities will disappear shortly.

Mostly it doesn't speak well of their political savvy. Hell, I have made sexist jokes, many here in these forums. (Just ask Hokulele.) But I'm not running for office. When you are a politician, you don't have the same freedom to "kid around" as you do when you are a normal person. Politicians know this when they decide to join the game.

The key to any joke is "know your audience". If your audience is the whole country, then you'd better be aware that probably anything you say is going to piss somebody off. If you don't know that, you're too stupid to hold public office.
