Sarah Palin!

A short news clip on the investigation, including a tape recording of the alleged political pressure:

Evidence for that last assertion?

I need evidence for my opinion? I think Biden has to be careful how he addresses Palin. If he comes across as a big bully, that won't help him even if he's right. He'll be better off attacking McCain.

I think it is interesting that McCain chose a VPILF. Time and time again I've seen Republicans sneer at women who have been less than attractive. They made jokes about Madeline Allbright, Hillary, Pelosi, Abzug, even stooping to attacking Chelsea Clinton and Amy Carter for their lack of comliness. Pulchritude is very important to them. By contrast, Republican Women are Babes. Condi, Palin, and of course, the Bush Twins. I've even gotten spam to this effect from some of my conservative friends. Is it a joke? Seems less like it every minute. I expect any minute to see the swimsuit competition to choose the top Republicanettes.

Don't forget the joke McCain told when Chelsea was a few years younger.

"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno."

I hadn't heard that. Is it documented that McCain said that? If so, it could neutralize any benefit he gets from choosing Palin. Frankly, I'm skeptical. He's a politician. He knows better than to make sexist jokes.

I thought picking Michael Palin was a really good idea but it turned out to be somebody I have never heard of.

A state of affairs that applies to a lot of Americans too apparently.

I totally understand the goal here, to go after the Hillary women, but McCain just robbed himself of his biggest talking point (that Obama isn't ready to lead). Nothing, NOTHING he can say about Obama's inexperience now won't blow back on his VP pick.

And please don't tell me, "She's just the VP, not the president!!!" McCain is not a young guy. She'd be half a heartbeat away from the presidency.

Hmm now... if she's unqualified to be even the "number 2" person on the ticket, based on inexperience and the fact that there is a "half a heartbeat" chance of her becoming number one.. then doesn't that automatically disqualify Obama right out of the gates?

Assuming that this argument of their inexerpience being inequal (which I reject, but will accept for sake of argument), this just evens out the tickets. The difference being that our inexperienced person is in the number two slot, yours is on the top of the ticket.

I don't see how you can possibly argue she's unfit for number 2, due to her experience, while saying that Obama is fit for the TOP OF THE TICKET based on the same experience. Either they are both underqualified, or not.

Much more on Palin from one of her constituents:

“Is this a joke?” That seemed to be the question du jour when my phone started ringing off the hook at 6:45am here in Alaska. I mean, we’re sort of excited that our humble state has gotten some kind of national ‘nod’….but seriously? Sarah Palin for Vice President? Yes, she’s a popular governor. Her all time high approval rating hovered around 90% at one point. But bear in mind that the 90% approval rating came from one of the most conservative, and reddest-of-the-red states out there. And that approval rating came before a series of events that have lead many Alaskans to question the governor’s once pristine image.

He's also got a picture of Lovely Downtown Wasilla, the town Palin was mayor of two years ago.

And the Wooten affair has many more details.

You forgot the liberal White House press room fixture Helen Thomas, Janet Reno, etc. I am sure Obama had Jennifer Garner, Jennifer Lopez, Rosario Dawson, and Kerry Washington at his convention for their gnomic input.

I have to say that if she was picked as a means to somehow draw my demographic (middle-aged white women) to the Republican fold, I'm highly insulted that they feel I could be so easily swayed... I'm not going to knee-jerk vote for McCain just because he's got a woman as his VP candidate.

One of the biggest Truthers at DU is currently jumping on board with the Incredibly Base Rumor/Falsehood that Palin's fourth child is actually the child of her oldest daughter. I'm irate as blue blazes. It's manifestly not true and it sickens me to watch some people jump on board that train to Crazytown.

I was watching her introducing her family at the RNC and I have to say that was only half listening while I was doing something else, but I was confused whether the little baby one of her daughters were holding was hers or her daughters. Not saying it was her daughter's, but the way she presented her and the name she called it left me unsure.

Maybe that's where they got the idea.

The Obama campaign laughs. That's foolish, really foolish. Obama's foreign policy experience? And if elected he won't be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

It's fine for the talking heads to say that it neutralizes the argument. But the Obama campaign should have kept out of it.

Palin has been to Iraq as many times as Obama.

It depends on what kind of "experience" you think is valueable. If it's experience in national government, then it's Obama. If it's experience in an executive office, then it's Palin (or the mayor of Possum Gulch). Some argue that a CEO with no political experience at all would make a good president.

But I think we've established that checking the boxes off on a resume doesn't make a person a good executive. The only point is that McCain can hardly rail about Obama's lack of experience when his hand-picked choice for VP is open to the same criticism. It is a quite valid point.

I would have been happier if McCain would have picked Giuliani, but I still think Palin hurts McCain. How many Hillary supporters are going to vote for McCain/Palin, considering she's pro-life and a creationist? The only thing this does is make history and prevent Biden from being mean to her. Not that Biden is hurt by this. He doesn't have to say a single word to her or about her to win a debate.

About 5 million of the 18 million who voted for Hillary, whom Bill Clinton outrageously proclaimed at the convention as definitely voting for Obama, will most likely now vote McCain.

Both Obama and McCain are articulate and able - will the VP matter much? (I appreciate it was different with GW but he was a bit of a one of).

OK, I am not American but I can't remember Clinton's VP or Reagan's VP.
