Galapagos Memories

Hey, I just saw this thread!

This was the best trip ever. Srsly. Phyz has it all just right, except he fails to realize the reason I was always happy was that I was hanging with him! (duh.) I now know beyond doubt that he is 10,000 times cooler than any teacher I had in high school...as well as being cooler than I'll ever be in general... sigh.

Oh, and as far as the fancy singing at the fancy Randi's birthday dinner.... I didn't really keep it together. I was long since gone before My Way even started...I don't know how I didn't get kicked out for laughing at Andrew Lloyd Cheesy.

Wowbagger's excitement at scoring an infraction on a Christian forum. You can't buy that kind of moment. Had to be there.
It wasn't a Christian forum, it was Debate Nation, but the moderator who gave me the infraction was a Christian (I think), not that it matters.

I scored that infraction, by saying this:
Most critical thinkers I know are not conspiracy theorists.
It was considered "insulting" behavior, by the moderator.

The sheer comical stupidity of it all, is what made me happy.

I stand corrected, good sir.

You were quite well behaved. No chance on you getting kicked out.

The entertainment was from watching you work to keep it together.

The opera dinner was the only part of the arranged tour that I really, really didn't like. I would have rather gone on a nighttime tour of seven more churches.

It wasn't any one thing, but rather the accumulation of several things that make me wish I had just locked myself in the hotel room that night.

* The food (I had the chicken) was very mediocre.

* The diet Coke I ordered at the beginning never arrived and my water glass was never refilled.

* Our table was directly beneath one of the speakers. Can you spell L-O-U-D?

* Any singing should have been relagated to background music. As it was, it put all conversation on hold since you couldn't even scream over it (see previous bullet item). Any why did the singer have to go behind the partition before every song? Couldn't he have had someone else press the Play button on the CD deck?

* And now for my single favorite moment of the evening: Everyone at our table had finished their appetizers, as evidenced by the empty plates in front of us. After quite a long time, someone came by and took my plate -- and only my plate. But then about a minute later, he brought it back! He brought back my dirty used appetizer plate and set it back down in front of me! I may not be the world's most sophisticated fine-dining expert, but I do know that this is something that you simply do not do.

* Meanwhile, the massive street celebration that was going on outside sounded like a lot of fun. In hindsight, I really wish we had bailed on the dinner and joined it.

The door to the lounge was locked everytime there was fun going on inside, but other that that the vacation was unbelievably great.

I don't think we can ever go on a vacation again....it will not live up to this trip.

It was truly wonderful to share the ship with so many great people.

Oh, so many memories!

* Winding up in a *parade* in Quito on the night before departure. (We also wound up in a heavy metal concert, but the parade experience was far trippier.)

* Coming up with the ultimate band name: "Chewbacca and the Live Shrimp Experience"

* Having a sea lion pup pretty much flop into my lap uninvited in San Chrisobal.

* Braving snorkeling even though I'm pretty much blind without my glasses... and then finding I didn't really need glasses because everything just swam right up to my face anyway.

* Swimming with sea lions, penguins, manta rays, sea turtles, sharks, and unbelievable schools of tiny red fish.

* Sitting in three feet of water, watching two foot-long angelfish investigate my flippers and ankles for five minutes.

* Watching manta rays wash over my feet while wading on the beach.

* Spotting a dogface puffer in the wild!

* Being sneezed upon by an iguana.

* Hearing weird grunting around the corner at the Darwin Station... and then watching the other photographers *flock* around two humping tortoises. I was too amused by the sight to actually take photos myself. Such a missed opportunity!

* Multitudes of boobies!

* Seeing the sea lion pup with a shark bite.

* Glancing into a pool of water to see hundreds of milimeter-long hermit crabs prowling about.

* Taking photos of the whale skeleton, realizing that I just shot the best photos I've taken in years.

* Watching the water from the deck of the ship on the last night, and seeing three sea lions, a couple pelicans, and about 20 Galapagos sharks circling around the upwelling schools of silvery fish.

* Chasing a Sally Lightfoot crab across the ship's deck during dinner.

* Hearing George perform all his element songs at once.

* Learning how to escape a strait jacket.

* Hanging out until wee hours of the morning in the hot tub, chatting with ScottH, Jonathan, George, Anni, Sean, et al. while we covered the lights and watched nocturnal gulls flying overhead.

* Experiencing the mounting irony of our Quito tour.

* Watching the whole room twitch when the opera singer announced that he'd be singing "Music of the Night".

* Non-stop Hava Nagila, with a bonus of Casiotone covers of "The Final Countdown" and Zamfir. Seriously, if he had CDs for sale, I would have bought them. Anguish shared is anguish lessened.

* Watching Randi perform at random times around the ship. In particular, watching him do a mentalist trick with my copy of Voyage of the Beagle and Joe's copy of Origin of Species.

* Breakfast with P.Z. Myers on my first day in Quito.

* Phil Plait's lightsaber.

* Seeking Quito's best scenic overlook with Sean at 3 AM on the morning we're supposed to leave.

* The colossal drunkening on the night that Jeff took over the bar, and my later disappointment that I couldn't taunt my cohorts on the following morning, as I seemed to be the only one awake.

* The discovery of the Cabinet of Unloved Liquor. "ANOTHER bottle of creme de minthe?!?"

* Watching The Amazing Randi perform escape tricks while I could see the back of his chair... and still being astonished.

* The long, excellent lunch with Jonathan and Jeff in Puerto Ayora, during which I was also introduced to the best meal of the trip: lobster fettucine with a cream sauce made of parmasan, coconut, and cinnamon. YUM.

* Best of all, meeting and spending time with EVERYONE. I walked into this trip without knowing anyone who was attending. (I'd met Phil and George very briefly before, but that's it.) I returned home just absolutely stoked that I could share all this with such a wonderful bunch of folks. (I'm doubly thankful that I got to see a bunch of you again at Dragon*Con!) I'm looking forward to many more years of keeping in touch with you guys.

And note to phyz: Aw, shucks!

Oh man, Carol and I have been relegated to the world of et al?! Now we know how the Professor and Mary Ann felt during the first season of Gilligan's Island.

Hey, now! It was one of the first nights of the cruise, and I was still trying to learn who everyone was. I remember there were many others who visited the tub, but I couldn't remember specifically who.

Besides, the Professor and Mary Ann were totally awesome. Mary Ann is far better than Ginger, and the Professor could make anything out of coconuts. (Okay, anything but a raft or a boat, but hey... Russell Johnson was also in Three Days of the Condor, and you can't get much cooler than that.)

I guess our nametags had soaked off by that point. I knew we should have just used Sharpies...

I'll note that coincidences happen. I happen to check on this thread just minutes -- literally -- after discovering I had squirreled away some fancy Ecuadoran chocolate bars given to me by none other than DesktopIcon and his entropically-haired SO.

Yum.
