McCain to announce Pawlenty as VP pick in morning

Markets are moving heavily to Pawlenty. NTSB has not released its study of the failure of the bridge, but has already noted a design flaw that may be responsible.

NBC is saying it isn't Pawlenty. Romney not to be in Ohio either.

Palin, maybe?

A Gulfstream IV from Anchorage, Alaska, flew into Middletown Regional Airport in Butler County near Cincinnati about 10:15 p.m. Thursday, said Rich Bevis, the airport's manager. He said several people came off the plane, including a woman and two teens, but there was no confirmation of who was aboard.

Had Fox and Friends on this morning. They were pretty much just reading off the Drudge Report which had this on the cover:

My money's on Palin. I think she'd be a good strategic pick, but I'm a little concerned at her lack of experience.

On the surface, a woman looks like a good pick. But she will be scrutinized far more than Biden ever will be ... just because she is a woman. She better be squeaky clean or this could turn into a nightmare for McCain.

Also, will she come across with women as a Hillary wannabe? It's a risky pick, but McCain probably needs to take some chances now.

A mysterious plane from Alaska bearing a woman landed near Dayton (where McCain will announce VP in a couple of hours). However, reports are that Palin is still in Alaska. Time will tell.

I know nothing of Palin's experience or strengths, but you have to think that at least part of the reason she would be McCain's VP was because she's a woman. Strategically, she would appeal to at least some Hillary supporters who, even if they can't have a specific woman in the White House, could at least have a woman in the White House.

CNN's John King now saying its definitely not Pawlenty.

ETA: Fox saying it's not Romney.

She would pull in some Hillary voters that just want to see a woman in the White House. But there is also a segment of the Republican party that doesn't believe women should be in leadership positions ... the very religious right. Her gender carries as many disadvantages as advantages, from my perspective.

Also, and I know this sounds sexist, but women (in general) will scrutinize her far more harshly than they would a man. I can speak from experience. :)

There is a single hint of a scandal on Palin, but her cooperation on the investigation is impeccable. She fired Walter Monegan as Commissioner of Public Safety and offered him another lesser post which he refused. Her stated reasons were that Monegan wasn't a team player on the budget and wasn't filling trooper vacancies fast enough. However someone from her office contacted Monegan and talking about getting a specific trooper fired, Mike Wooten.

Wooten had been married to Palin's sister. There had been a messy divorce and child custody proceeding. Before Palin became governor, Wooten had been suspended for five days because he had threatened the life of Palin's father and tasered his 11-year-old stepson. Nasty character all around.

Palin and the official who contacted Monegan both say she had no knowledge of this. Palin is bending over backwards to produce sunshine in this case. She doesn't appear to have any connection to the current scandals roiling in the Alaskan scene. In fact, such distance was a part of her winning campaign strategy in 2006.

She's staunchly pro-life, but she vetoed a ban on same-sex partners receiving spousal benefits from the state government (questions of constitutionality). She's an appeal to women voters, but she undercuts McCain's experience argument somewhat. She's been stamping out Alaskan pork projects from the moment she took office, and she's young, young, young. Therefore she complements McCain's maverick theme extremely well. I'm surprised that we haven't heard more about her until now. She'd make an excellent pick.

Pawlenty said on Twin Cities radio (WCCO) this morning he is not going to Dayton today and pretty much indicated without actually saying it that he will not be the Veep.
