TAM 7 Forum Party Proposal

okay. So far I vote that Wowbagger is bringing the ipod and speakers :D

Still no venue ideas. Sighs.

Well, there are smoking and non-smoking hotel rooms. The party, this year, was in a smoking room. Though, there were only a small number of smokers in it, so it was not a big deal.

I think smoke-free is a reasonable restriction. Though smoking was not a problem this year, you never know: it could become an issue next year, depending on various factors. (number of smokers, size of room, performance of air circulation systems, accessibility to outside (via balcony or whatever), types of things smoked, etc.)
Speaking from my own experience, I've had to go outside to smoke for so long that I actually feel uncomfortable smoking indoors. Not that that will be a problem for me at TAM7, since I won't be smoking. Just an observation.

Well, I don't actually have an iPod, at the moment (though, I suppose I could pick one up, one of these days), but I do have a laptop, that can store ooodles of music! Hook that up to some good speakers (which I already have some pairs of), and we're all set!

I just hope everyone loves "Weird Al" Yankovic as much as I do. :D

Just a couple cents from me:

- We had an ipod and speakers at the past 2 parties. If you have a large crowd, playing the music loud enough to hear it will get the cops to kick you out :)

- If you hire a hall/ballroom etc (probably the best bet, based on volume of people), you may have to consider how late the party is allowed to go. You get food and a bar (cash or open) for a certain number of hours based on paying for staff - so you lose some of the comfort of being able to go as late as you want. Not an insurmountable problem but it will add to the price.

- I was unable to find a place that would let us bring our own food and certainly not our own alcohol, although a) I didn't look at much in Vegas and b) the hotel in Florida for 5.5 did say that they'd be open to letting us use their pool area but the lady never called me back.

- I could be wrong but I could SWEAR the place we got at TAM 6 was a non-smoking room. But that could just be my bad memory.

- You won't get a place in a high-rise in Vegas that will let you open windows or have a balcony. We asked and it's because of jumpers.

- As I've said in the past, it was not the level of alcohol that caused the noise, it was the sheer volume of people. Most people were not talking very loudly but when you have 100 people talking in normal voices and laughing, it gets loud in an enclosed space.

Well, I'll be going to Vegas again in September, for a work-related conference. I'm sure I could find time to go down to the South Point Casino, and ask a few of these questions, if anyone is interested.

Please and thank you! You're the best.

Hey, I LOVE Weird Al. I alslo love to dance.

Ok, a couple of points from someone who works at a convention and deals with hotels and running parties and banquets. Any hotel or hall space that you rent, they will require you to get food and drink from them. You will NOT be allowed to bring your own of anything. They make their money off of the catering and the charges are for food and drink for people. You will have to give them a head count. If you give them a larger head count than show up (highly unlikely as that seems) you will have to pay for the number of people you gave them. I seriously doubt you will find any place in Vegas that is hurting for business and will give you lots of freedom and options for running things your own way. The only time you have any leverage is if you are running a very large event and they really want your business. Since the forum party is not an official JREF event, you will have no leverage there at the South Point.

The number of hours you can use the room will be limited and the food service will be limited by the number of hours their staff will be there, and there will be staff there. Normally if they put out food in a buffet of any sort you have a 2 hour limit for the food to be out. Period.

If you want the freedom to plan your party and do as you please then renting a house is truly your best option.

Hm. Doesn't have to be THAT swanky. What is the average going rate for a house rental for one night that doesn't have whiny neighbors that will call the cops on us? Man, for a party town, it is sure hard to set up a freaking party.

Oh, they are actually affordable if we chip in together:

One night is up to $500, and the one at the link is only 3 minutes from the strip.

Found a nifty site that has mansions and other homes for rent. This one is especially swanky: http://www.vrbo.com/199564

I think that's an excellent idea -- going for one of the less expensive ones, of course, but it should be easy to find for those not familiar with LasVegas.

Of course the advantage to having it in the hotel is that there's less travel time (um, wait, some of those hotels are bigger than small cities) at the end of the party, with no designated driver required.

Forget banquet rooms, condos, hotel rooms and rental houses. Let's just meet in the parking lot and run amok.

How much are the banquet rooms then, and how much noise are we allowed to make before it gets shut down again? The last two forum parties in hotels resulted in the party being broken up by the bigwigs. As fun as that is, I wanna party hardy without interruptions. So it's a banquet room or house rental. We can get some prices and vote on it?

We could provide shuttle service. Also, several people could stay overnight in the house.

It was actually the last three parties. But, who's counting?

I think it might be time to recognize that the forum party has outgrown its humble roots and to pull the plug on it. Personally, I have no interest in traveling off site to some rented house when there are perfectly good bars in the hotel.

Can we get a head count and find a bar that will let us wander around and take over the place?

Huh. I never thought I'd see the day Scrut would become a party pooper.
