Merged Summing up the evidence against Controlled Demolition

The point is that you guys (The JRef community) swear by these investigations put forth by our government.
The people who wrote the NIST report aren't the "government". They are the recognized experts in their fields, and all have been extensively published in peer-reviewed engineering journals. Very few are permanent NIST employees.

It should also be recognized that other institutions have run independent simulations and experiments to help determine the performance of the relevant structures that day. Purdue just to name one, there are other which I am certain you're more familiar with than me.

Numerous case studies have also been performed on the buildings by relevant engineering groups. NIST is not the only group that has analyzed the event with similar results, albeit in some cases there are minor isagreements with individual results

The evidence was that convincing that a CD didn't occur - notice I didn't say Controlled Explosion - that NIST didn't even bother to look for means in which it could be done, instead relying on a recently invented concept named "Thermal Expansion" to explain the events of WTC7. Anyone who thinks that the representative for NIST managed a competent rebuttal to the questions in the recent press conference, is living in denial.

I haven't been keeping count. Is this the first instance of a quote taken out of context for this presentation or has somebody all ready beaten him to it?

Are you going to tell me what you find so funny, or did you miss the bit where he said they only came up with the idea a year ago?

What is funny is that you have confused NISTs explanation of what caused building collapse, with them defining some sort of new steel behaviour.

Thermal expansion is a well known phenomenon, however this is the first time in history we are aware of a skyscraper [edited to acknowledge R Mackey's comment below] collapsing due to the differential thermal expansion of components. Please read the report before you comment like this :)

This is not the point people!!!

The point is that you guys (The JRef community) swear by these investigations put forth by our government. Anything they say you stand by and bash others with their lac of knowledge on the subjects.
You tell them for the most part to do some "Critical Thinking"

Yet when things you have totally defended for months and months on get flipped around on you all you have to say is.....

NOTHING! You just now go along with the fire explanation as if everything is ok. Now for the next couple of years you will act as if the fire explanation now handed to us by NIST is the bible for 9/11 research.
You will defend it without question!
You will state that this is now 100% factual backed by evidence and that any other theories would be wrong!

No! This is complete garbage!

Read my last reply to you. I'm quite active here, and I've given my opinion that the impact damage had little to do with the collapse for months. Nobody ripped on me for that.

I've written a whitepaper that criticizes NIST in several areas, and I will probably issue some criticisms on their new findings as well.

What we criticize people for is denialism. If you have legitimate problems with the reports, that's fine. Many scientists do. Reason it out. Some criticism is perfectly valid.

But what tends to happen here instead is dogmatic rejection of the reports -- all the crap about "squibs" and "steel melted" and all the other nonsense that is not even cognizant of the reports' contents. Factual error, failures of logic, outlandish burdens of proof, that all gets beat upon here, and it should.

This is just like the factual error in your posts. You completely fail to understand the debate that takes place here, and as a result, your complaint is utter tripe. If you want to be taken seriously, lose the "us vs. them" attitude, and try to pay attention.

I'm reasonably certain that thermal expansion has been linked to collapse of structures before, i.e. bridges (I'll have to look, but those expansion joints aren't just there for show). This is not a new phenomenon. Thermal expansion caused by fire, leading to a collapse of a skyscraper, on the other hand, is novel.

But it's not like this is mysterious physics. Only a more complicated application of it than in the past.

Fair comment, I was a bit too general. Sorry about that :)

Unlike most "truthers" i respect NIST a lot. The task they were given, make the official lie not stink to high heaven, is a challenging task.

So if you "respect" NIST, how do you explain their participation in covering-up the greatest crime in history? Do you feel they are merely cowards, the way you believe the FDNY are cowards, and were thus coerced into complicity?

If fires are sucessfully fought, they arent fires anymore.

The glaring obviousness of your observation aside, what is your theory as to why the fires in WTC7 were not successfully fought? Since you believe the FDNY to be cowards, do you list "fire" as one of the many things you think they are afraid of?

As pointed out here, thermal expansion of steel in structural constructions is not exactly a new concept. Here from an article from 1987 discussing structural fire protection on the page of National Research Council Canada Institute for Research in Construction:
A final aspect to consider when using steel in construction is its significant coefficient of linear expansion under thermal loads. At temperatures of up to 1000 ° C, it is given as: 14

alpha = (0.004T + 12) x 10-6
where alpha = coefficient of thermal expansion, in degrees Celsius -1,
T = temperature in degrees Celsius.

If the structural member is axially restrained against displacement (as a column is), the expansion due to heat will be translated into thermal stresses that will increase the overall stress level in the member and cause an earlier collapse. Without axial restraint, a steel member will expand and could set up eccentric loading of adjacent structural members by displacing one of their ends (for example, a beam displacing the top of a column or of a load bearing masonry wall), as illustrated in Figure 6. Good fire protection engineering dictates that either thermal expansion be prevented by limiting steel temperatures, or its effects on the structure be accommodated in the design.

To understand what role thermal expansion played in WTC 7 I recommend reading section 8.7 in NIST NCSTAR 1-9 Vol 1. Then take look at the remainder of chapter 8th too. It explains the difference between WTC 7 and some other well known high rise building. The reader will also find that the results from Cardington tests supports NIST's findings in this case.

Hi Roundhead,

I've taken the liberty of breaking your compound question into reasonable clauses.

Certainly. My history lesson proves that thermal expansion is a well-known physical phenomenon and has been for a long time. It's a response to attempts by other posters to imply that thermal expansion was instead a concept newly fabricated by NIST.

The reason wtc7 was the first building to fall victim to "this scourge" (if indeed it was, rather than simply the first for which the contribution of thermal expansion was recognized) is that it can only happen in a structure that is designed to take advantage of various fire safety systems such as sprinklers, heat-resistant coatings, and fire departments (for instance, it would not happen in a structure designed for fire safety through compartmentalization) but for which those systems fail or their limits are exceeded, AND when various factors such as the length of spans, the locations of fires on multiple floors, and a column carrying an unusually large proportion of the total load all align to create a vulnerability.

I haven't read the wtc7 report yet, so I don't know what physical tests they conducted. However, I would not be surprised if they did not perform tests to directly determine the thermal expansion coefficient of steel, as that data is available in any engineering handbook of physical constants. (They probably didn't conduct their own tests of the strength of earth's gravitational field either.)

Where did they state that they came to an illogical conclusion?

Or is that your claim? In which case you're welcome to provide evidence (or at least a coherent rantionale) for it.

Please support this claim by specifying these other options, in comparable detail to what NIST explained about its conclusions at the press conference. Include the causes and the actions of the underlying physical processes, the specific structural members affected, and the rationale for how those phenomena account for the observed behavior of the building.

Respectfully,
Myriad

The building collapsed at virtually free fall speed. Several studies have been done(Including by Legge)which show from observing a certain point of the building as reference, and timing and calculating its speed, it was "virtually" free fall speed. It fell though basically air, through the path of MOST resistance, the structure itself.

Billowing clouds of dust are a characteristic of CD.

Controlling the rubble pile by pulling in the exterior columns to fall inward, are evidence of a sucessful CD

The kink in the Penthouse is a telltale sign of symetrical widespread interior column failure. An attribute of a sucessful demo, and easy to note on demo videos for a comparison.

Reports by witnesses state the bottom floor was blown out prior to the onset of destruction. This characteristic is common on demo's.

Witnesses state the building was cordoned off and the collapse expected as early as 3:00 in the afternoon. This is always done prior to a demo, its collapse is expected and the area is cleared.

Pile debris was removed prior to researchers being able to study it.This IS done on a CD because the cause is already known, no reason to examine the pile.

Deputy Chief Hayden:"It came down about 5 oclock in the afternoon, but by about 2 oclock in the afternoon we realized this thing was going to collapse".

Emergency worker:it was horrifying... about a second later the bottom floor caved out and the building followed after that... we saw the building crash down all the way to the ground... we were in shock." - 1010 WINS NYC News Radio

Rescuer 3: "The building is about to blow up. Move it back!"

"We are walking back. There's a building about to blow up. There's flame and debris coming down."

The buildings collapse, if it was a CD, in the aftermath did exactly what a designed CD should do. In other words, building 7, in aftermath, looks exactly like what a Cd should look like, if sucessfull. Symetrical, no or virtually no collateral damage, neat tidy debris pile.

7 exhibited all of the features of a CD, nothing doesnt fit, it displays all the signature characteristics.

In short

7 looks exactly like a cd

It demise was predicted ahead of time

Its rubble was removed before researchers could study it(and removed by cd company)

It, if not a CD(cd's are of course a common occurance)would have to be explained away as something that isnt a common occurance, but would still feature all the same characteristics)

This hasnt been done.

Asymetrical damage doesnt agree with complete and symetrical near freefall failure.

No metal from the supposed failure area has been studied to support this "anti theory" of fire being the only cause.NO PHYSICAL EVIDENCE SUPPORTS FIRE AS A CAUSE, of the building being pulverized and destroyed

Where are multiple, huge concrete floor pieces in the rubble. Much as an eathquake can bring a building down, and photographic evidence shows it leaves large pancaked floor sections visible in the rubble, 7, if falling down only because of fire, should mimic this attribute, as both are in fact gravity collapses, and fire doesnt pulverize concrete. This is an extremely important point. Fire damage and earthquake damage should result in similar loking debris piles with intact or semi intact piles of floors visible.

Fire has never before brought down completely a steel framed building, and many have been on fire, longer, and more widespread.

The collapse was predicted, in spite of the fact the ultimate explanation for the buildings demise was a first time in history failure, that nobody in the city could have possibly have thought of in a historical perspective.

If it was a CD, its perfectly logical to predict demise ahead of time, and get people back and rope it off, in fact its normal.

If its fire alone, its illogical to predict demise, there is no precedent.

There is overwhelming evidence to state that CD is the cause regarding 7. Its fits the video evidence perfectly, it fits the resultant debris pile perfectly, it would explain why its demise was predicted ahead of time perfectly, and would also explain why its rubble was not studied, if CD was trying to be hid as the culprit.

Did someone just reboot the topic?

Haven't we've been through this before? It's like Groundhog Day.

Someone should propose to the moderators that "virtually freefall speed" should be a suspendable offense...

See Appendix B of my whitepaper. Rapid collapse is normal. This issue is settled, already.

I'd like to hear why he thinks that large slabs of concrete weren't found in the pile. I thought the debris was cleared away so fast that nobody got to examine it.

And yet in seven years none of these people have come forward to reveal what they witnessed in support of a controlled demolition theory. Do you believe it's because they're all cowards the way you believe the FDNY to be cowards?

I agree 100% with you. Rapid collapse is normal, IN A CD. They nearly all have this feature.

Fire induced failure of a steel framed skyscraper, has no known "failure mode" its without precedent.

Rapid, near freefall collapse is perfectly in sync with a CD. Its entirely without precedent in a fire induced collapse, so uncomparable and unreferenceable.

The debris pile, as i pointed out earlier, also contains characteristics of CD, massive pulverization, and no large chanks of stacked floors/concrete, that are evident in other "gravity" driven collapses.

In addition, as i earlier pointed out, "pile research" which was basically not scientifically carried out regarding 7's rubble pile, is normal for a CD. Demo companies have no need to research the pile, the reason for it being there is a designed, preordained event, that's causation needs no study.

A cd company would do exactly what we saw regarding 7, know its fine to remove the pile without study, because the piles existance is already factually accounted for.

...
You have no idea what physics means. If only you would take a physics course and review your ideas with a teacher, you may stop exposing your ignorance on physics and fire.

You keep stating as fact this coward issue, which is certainly unreferenceable with regards anything i have ever said, as though it were fact.

As i HAVE said previously, i believe that 7 was allowed to intentionally burn, and efforts were curtailed by somebody high up in the food chain that were they allowed to be made, with all the professionalism of the firefighters, and equipment that may well have been brought to bear, the building might have been saved.

I think all firefighting assets in NYC did a great job that day. The leadership at the highest levels is what i question. Many firefighters, as would be expected, were exasperated that they were pulled back, and the building roped off and allowed to burn.
