The pick will come this week, perhaps early on wednesday, according to the NY Times, and it will probably be Bayh, Kaine or Biden.

Not that I know a lot about these guys, but Bayh seems like the safest pick of those three. I hope it's not Biden. Nothing against him, but I don't think he would be a political asset. I'm OK with the other two, although I suppose that there's some on the left that won't be happy. But, what are they going to do, vote for McCain or Nader?

I still think Clinton would be a good choice, but no one seems to think he will pick her.

It would make sense now that the conventions are a'coming. When was Kerry/Edwards made public?

The three likely VP's seem to be collosally boring picks. I always thought James Webb was the perfect running mate for Obama.

On July 7th. I don't recall when the convention was that year. Yes, they do seem boring. (But boring is fine for a vice-president. He is not supposed to be a stand-up comic.) Hillary would be less boring, IMHO. But so many in the chattering classes hate her and predict disaster, and perhaps there are still some bad feelings from the hard-fought primary campaign.

Something had to have come up during the vetting process though, right?

Has to be a reason he was eliminated early on.

I thought that Webb ruled himself out.

Here. Maybe he self-vetted, and decided that he had something he didn't want to risk coming out (something John Edwards should have done). Or maybe he really doesn't want the job and the level of scrutiny of a national campaign.

Mark Warner was another good possibility, but he also ruled himself out. As did Ted Strickland.

It's possible all these guys self-vetted. Or, they were happy where they were. Warner's practically a shoe-in for a Senate seat, the other two already have good offices.

Jim Geraghty has some colorful quotes from Biden about McCain:

Biden appearing on The Daily Show, August 2, 2005: “John McCain is a personal friend, a great friend, and I would be honored to run with or against John McCain, because I think the country would be better off, be well off no matter who...”

And Obama:

Assessing Obama’s Iraq plan on September 13, 2007: “My impression is [Obama] thinks that if we leave, somehow the Iraqis are going to have an epiphany” of peaceful coexistence among warring sects. “I’ve seen zero evidence of that.”

Of course that doesn't mean that they can't kiss and make up; Bob Dole famously picked Jack Kemp, despite Kemp's memorable quip:

"In a recent fire, Bob Dole's library burned down. Both books were lost. And he hadn't even finished coloring one of them."

Webb freely admits he is too abrasive for a job like VP which requires a lot of diplomacy. He puts that quality as to why he did not do that well as Secratary of the Navy back in the 80's.
I kind of wish they would bring back the tradition of not announcing the name of the VP candidate until the last day of the Convention. Added some suspense to the otherwise boring proceedings.

Several had said Obama/Biden sounds too much like -yes- you guessed it, Osama Bin Laden.

The Obama campaign is milking this like I have not seen for a while.
BUt I love the way the talking heads are going crazy trying to read the tea leaves, though.

It has to be entering the final couple of hours now hasn't it? As you said, the cow must be dry as the surface of Mercury by now.

This whole "I've made up my mind, but who it is, I'm not going to tell you" routine is obnoxious.

He is allegedly going to hold off until Saturday, so the Media can milk McCain's housing gaffe some more. Kaine probably not the guy.

I would just ignore all the speculation. The talking heads attempts to read some clue into every word Obama has said lately is becoming funny.
The only guy who was a strong possiblity who I would definently rule out is John Edwards...
