I'd presume the Democratic Party would, it would be quite embarrassing to nominate someone who is ineligible for the office.

The FBI and other government agencies should stay out of it in the absence of a lawsuit and court order.

There are, of course, several theories as to why Obama might not be able to come up with a legitimate birth certificate. First, was he really born in the USA? If not, he's ineligible for the presidency, because his mom was too young to confer automatic citizenship on him if he was born outside the US with a foreign father.

Can anyone confirm this? The Truth or fiction site claims there is no such law:

If no such law exists (or existed at the time of Obama's birth) then this really is a tempest in a teapot: he is a US citizen on the basis of having been born to a mother who was a US citizen at the time.

It seems the definition of a natural born citizen is ambiguous and whether the courts would rule on the issue is also undetermined. Not that either contender seems to be in danger of exclusion.

Note: Obama was referred to as Barry Soetoro during his years in Indonesia. His mom, after divorcing Barack Obama, Sr., married a guy called Lolo Soetoro from Indonesia. I don't know if Obama was legally adopted and don't particularly care. The idea that a Hawaiian birth certificate with that name would somehow rule out Barack Obama as president is silly; if he was born in Hawaii he's eligible. And at least two presidents have already been elected with names they weren't born with; Bill Clinton was known as Bill Blythe into his high school years, and Gerald Ford was born Leslie King, Jr. What happened? Like Barack, their moms married another guy; the difference was that in their cases the marriage took and the name stuck.

Like I said, when I started this thread; I expected there to be nothing to it, but it was a topic of conversation that was hot. Now it's only being talked about in the real fever swamps like No Quarter.
