Is "black hole" a racially insensitive term?

The stereoptying cannot be dispelled because it's a deeply ingrained psychological need. But it very well might be minimized by exposing the American audience to the reality of Hispanic racial diversity which simply doesn't lend itself to the category of "brown" but which encompasses European white, African black, and and Asiatic yellow, especially via its native Ameriucan population as well as all combinations of these in different percentages in accordance with geographical distribution and national boundaries.

I don't see how you have presented a case, that English subtitles for Hispanic language television broadcasts, would do anything to dispel much of the inane stereotyping of the Latino community ....

How would subtitles expose the American audience to the reality of Hispanic racial diversity ?

Neither have you presented any convincing counterargument except the popular and mindless "I don't see!" To me when someone declares not to see the obvious or tags the obvious as unseeable-it signals that anything and everything else said be responded to in the same manner. That's not skeptiism. It's simply an attempt to frustrate while trying to hide behind a transparent veneer of feigned incredulity.

For certain people, such as very possibly yourself-no amount of additional exposure via comprehension of subject-matter incentive which inevitably translates into an increase in the number of viewers would have any effect whatsoever and they'd continue to stereotype via the innacurate but very useful browning. It's a blindness of utility.

BTW
Your reluctance to accept the Hispanic racial diversity sounds like an African-American-aversion to-Hispanic-diversity reaction. An example of insensitivity by a people who are constantly demanding sensitivity.

Hispanics: A Culture, Not a Race
Hispanics and Hispanicism: A culture, not a racial group or a distinct race ... For the last time: Hispanicism is NOT a race! ...

Where did I argue for anything ?

You made the claim about the subtitles, and I asked you to explain ..

Which you have failed to do, while blathering on about Hispanic racial diversity ...

You are contradicting yourself, because you just made a comment about " ... Hispanic racial diversity .... "

Besides, I don't see where anyone but you, is making any kind of connection between Hispanicism ( made up word ) and race ...

Your sarcasm meter needs fixed FYI.

As your sentence stands its nonsensical.

Here are a few grammatically correct alternatives:

way:

"Your sarcasm meter needs fixing."

"Your sarcasm meter needs to be fixed."

"Your sarcasm meter is in need of being fixed."

You seem to be taking the position that subtitles have absolutely no effect on potential viewers. A position you offer absolutely no evidence to support. And a position which is so untenable as to be silly.

You made the claim about the subtitles, and I asked you to explain. Which you have failed to do, while blathering on about Hispanic racial diversity

The explanation is written in clear English within my answer. The reason you see the info as blathering is because you disagree and are annoyed.

First, I don't need to see anyone else doing anything in order for me to do it. Second, your nitpicking about made-up words is irrelevant. Third, the reason you see it as a contradiction is because you are hell-bent on browning an ethnic group which includes pure Blacks, pure whites, and pure orientals as well as populations which are a mixture of these three in different combos.

BTW

Some things need to be exposed and aired lest they fester silently and insidiously do their nasties. A concept which the Latin American community in the USA seems unable to grasp. In short, you have the Afro American community going berserk at the slightest provocation, and at the other extreme you have the Latino community completely passive as it regularly gets its teeth kicked in. Both groups need to find the middle-ground to avoid those vices. A decrees in sensitivity for one group and perhaps an increase in sensitivity by the other.

I think bigred's consruct is some kind of regional usage. Mrs. BPSCG 1.0 used to say it occasionally, claimed it was a Pennsylvania Dutch idiom; she was from southeast Pennsylvania and said people from there talk like that all the time.

If you're serious, try practicing what you preach.

If you're not, that was a really weak joke.

It is indeed a Penna thing" but not just SE Penna.

Well I'm off for some funnel cake, shoo-fly pie, and Genny 12 Horse Ale.

Yes, I know its origins and a know that "spic" isn't a derogative term within that product advertisement context.

However, the exact term "spick and Span" was used by rednecks in the TV episode of the program. "The Waltons" as an intended insult to an Hispanic who was seen as not staying in his place. Recently the comedian Mencia mentioned it jokingly in the same manner. But do you really believe that if the "N" word were being used instead the company using it wouldn't have come under criticism and they wouldn't have had to change it by now?

It doesn't really equate. The "n word" doesn't have any other uses besides the one. "Cracker" does, and is used all the time. I haven't heard of anyone complaining to Triscuit or Ritz about it.

People aren't really that stupid. Where there is no intent, there is no insult. Possibly ignorance, which can be corrected, but it's foolish to take insult when none is offered.

What utter idiots.

I'll use 'black hole' until I die, and by it I'll always mean that singularly glorious celestial object, not Jesse Jackson's happy place.

I have to believe that was also sarcasm (esp given the source)....
