The last major remnant of Saddam Hussein's nuclear program — a huge stockpile of concentrated natural uranium — reached a Canadian port Saturday to complete a secret U.S. operation that included a two-week airlift from Baghdad and a ship voyage crossing two oceans.

The removal of 550 metric tons of "yellowcake" — the seed material for higher-grade nuclear enrichment — was a significant step toward closing the books on Saddam's nuclear legacy.
Saddam had no nuclear program. AP obviously still believes Bush's lies.

Um we know their was a program prior to gulf war one. We also know it had stoped.

This is that whole "yellowcake" thing, isn't it? I've been waiting for someone to fall for it, and think that this shows that Bush was right. What it actually shows is that right-wingers are effing suckers and willfully ignorant. We've ALWAYS known about the yellowcake, the inspectors knew exactly how much Iraq had. It has nothing whatsoever to do with a WMD or nuclear weapons program, and everyone with half a brain knows it.

The right wing rely on people forgetting their whoppers. Originally they claimed that Saddam Hussein had actual nuclear weapons and Cheney and Rice went around warning of mushroom clouds despite knowing that a number of the claims not only were false but based on forged documents.

That the right wing are still trying to use this discredited and hoary old chestnut says more about their desperation that anything else.

Ad homs noted.

I love it when the leftist apologists find themselves furiously backpedaling. First they tried to claim that Saddam had no yellowcake. Whoops, he did. Okay, then they tried to claim he wasn't trying to get yellowcake from Niger. Except that Bush never claimed he was trying to get it from Niger. Somehow Joe Wilson managed to make everyone believe that straw man. Helps to have lots of Bush-hating friends in the mainstream media.

Now they say, "Oh, we knew he had yellowcake all along." Yeah, right. And you "knew it all along" that the Soviet Union was not as strong as it looked and that it was ready to collapse and that Ronald Reagan just happened to be standing around to steal the credit when it did collapse.

Pull the other one. Next you'll be saying you "knew all along" that the surge in Iraq would work.

You do realize that having something and aquireing more of it show very different motivations right?

This was known about. I might not have known about it personaly, but it is natural uranium, not enriched uranium.

So, what do you do with yellowcake?

Make iPods?

Well it might well be perfectly useable for the nuclear waste type weapons that the US uses.

If you are so worried about uranium then the US military shouldn't make their bullets and tanks out of it.

It was certianly likely for enrichment, though how much was for weapons vs peaceful uses, I don't know.

The point is that by itself it is basicly harmless, you need some way to refine the right isotopes, to make weapons grade uranium.

See what this took the US in WWII, with its factory that was a mile long(a bent around into a U shape so the actual building was only a half mile long)

It could also be used in ceramic glazes

Before the discovery of nuclear fission by Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann in 1939, the principal use of uranium (chiefly as the oxides) was in pigments, ceramic glazes, and a yellow-green fluorescent glass and as a source of radium for medical purposes. It has also been added to steels to increase their strength and toughness. However, because of the high toxicity (both chemical and radiological) of uranium and its compounds, and because of their importance as nuclear fuel, these earlier uses have been largely curtailed.

Why was it still in Iraq 10 years later?

Probably something to do with economic sanctions and the low value of uranium in the 90s. Oh and the IAEA would have to be all over the sale which means even more costs. So if you sold at peak in the 1990s (about 96) you would get $20,000,000 minus costs. More realistaly you would be looking at $12 million minus costs. Slight problem that the sanctions on Iraq would have made it kinda tricky to find a buyer.

FWIW the current sale should have a value of about $71 million.

So after three years, hundreds of thousands of casualties and an estimated total economic cost of $3 trillion, we've finally found some unrefined uranium that can't make weapoms and we knew he had anyway?

Yeah, the inspections are working.

I guess that means Bill Clinton is an effing sucker as well:

Clinton painted a bleak future if nations did not cooperate against "organized forces of destruction," telling the audience that only a small amount of "nuclear cake put in a bomb would do ten times as much damage as the Oklahoma City bomb did."

Make up your mind. Also please tell me about and where the US uses them? Or did you make that up?

Depleted Uranium ammunition. It is what the majority of the uranium in the yellowcake actually is, as it is metallic uranium. It just has most of the isotopes needed for nuclear bombs removed.

So it is waste from the nuclear programs, hence nuclear waste.

It is also a negligible radiological hazard(pure natural uranium might be worse, but it would still not be that much of a radiological hazard)

Oh yeah, the Hot shots. I forgot about those. They can melt right through a tank. But I thought Israel bombed out all Iraq's nuclear reactor? So where did they get nuclear waste and what were they going to do with it? Hot Shots? Hmmm. A violation of the UN agreement?

One more question. If everyone knew about this yellowcake and it is useless for a bomb, why was it "a secret U.S. operation"?
