Fight the Smears

Malik reportedly said that Obama would be good for the Jews. Some people might think that's a smear. (not me, of course)
Seriously, that's meant to be a smear? Something that he should deny on his website? What if it's true and he's proud of it? It's what he told AIPAC.

Do even you believe a word you're saying?

And if Malik or Odinga are not actually related to Obama, well, lying about someone also can be considered a smear.
It is not a smear even to falsely claim that someone is cousin to the Prime Minister of Kenya, because this is not defamatory. Besides, what if Odinga's telling the truth? Where, then, would be the smear?

As I posted: "Who cares what his brother or his cousin get up to?" My posting of those two news items really has touched a nerve.
To be precise, the ulnar nerve.

That depends on how one views Odinga doesn't it? He has been called a violent socialist by some in Kenya. Barack may think it's a good idea to distance himself.

That would depend on whether he really is a violent socialist, whether he really is Obama's cousin, whether it is possible to annul cousinship, and whether any significant number of lunatics will attempt to smear Obama through guilt by the fourth degree of kinship with someone thousands of miles away from him on a different continent whom he's never met.

Yes, exactly. As DareDelvis put it, to which I agreed: "It is disgusting how xenophobic some people are that this would be an issue at all."

Also, there are those who belong to the Obama cult (present company excluded of course) who become outraged at the mearest mention, or link, that appears to connect Obama to folks such as Malik and Odinga. Probably because they believe that the American voters would react negatively to it for the xenophobic reason above. I don't share this dark view of the American public. I believe the vast majority of voters will look beyond these real or alleged connections and vote their consciences. That doesn't mean though that Barack shouldn't address the questions if his campaign does think it may damage their chances.

Yeah, shame on whoever tried to make this an issue.

Linky?

Evidently they're just going after what one might call the mainstream looneys. A quick google suggests that rather fewer people are concerned with Obama's relationship with Odinga than his possible identity as the Antichrist, but I'm not sure that his campaign should spend any time on that either.

Wow, a mind-reader.

The purpose of my comment was to inform you of what should have been obvious: that your link was so non-substantive as to be ridiculous. Here's the full text of the 'article':
JP article said:
Barack Obama's half brother Malik said Thursday that if elected his brother will be a good president for the Jewish people, despite his Muslim background. In an interview with Army Radio he expressed a special salutation from the Obamas of Kenya.
Frankly, I don't care about the substance(?). But since you do, you should do the legwork and post what the brother actually said rather than foist vague tidbits such as this on an audience of skeptics.

You're welcome for the feedback! :)

Well, "mainstream looneys" seems to me to be a little bit of a contradiction in terms but I think I understand what you're saying. Then again, that's why I said that Barack's campaign may want to address it. Again, it depends on the public perception of Malik and Odinga among American voters as we get closer to the election.

No, actually you said you weren't happy with the substance. Remember when you posted this:

DaChew: Muslim Background. Happy now?

Seeing as the snippet (can't really call it an article) doesn't actually quote the brother, nope.

You are the one that is unhappy with the J Post portrayal of Malik's interview with Army Radio. I foisted nothing on you, brother.

I agree. I mean, who cares what his brother OR his cousin, Raila Odinga http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7176683.stm, get up to?

I am more concerned about the rumors that this jerk

is his cousin.

Seems like a good, and necessary, effort to me. Problem is, of course, that anyone who believes these stories will probably not trust anything coming from Obama's campaign at all.

As researching urban legends is sort of a hobby of mine, I visit snopes.com very frequently and I must say there's been far, far more stories aiming to discredit the Democratic nominees debunked there during the campaigns. I've been wondering a bit why exactly that is. Perhaps it's due to the fact that the nominees were a woman and a black man (whose father was once a Muslim), making many people uncomfortable but unable to publicly express it due to social norms (urban legends tend to serve as a vent for such feelings). Or the lengthy battle between the nominees sparked the rumors. Or Snopes simple has some kind of political bias and spends more time debunking rumors about the Democratic nominees.

Either way, with all the false information being spread for propaganda purposes, perhaps every presidential candidate should consider establishing a similar site. There certainly are some things McCain could straighten out what way - he may have a temper and a knack for making offensive (although sometimes admittedly hilarious) jokes, but some of the things he is claimed to have said could use some critical examination.

That's probably a factor, but I think moreso because they've been in the spotlight more and for much longer during their bids for the nomination.

That's actually a rumor? I haven't heard that one. I probably don't want to hear it.

Wow, that's bizarre. How do people go from countering smears to being anti-free speech.

Well, lets see how this goes:

Who cares what Obama's ninth cousin gets up to?

I thought you did. You were the one linking to his alleged cousin earlier in this very thread. So I have to ask you what the heck was your point?
