Michelle Obama's Whitey Video--Does It Exist?

Alright, I am going to go on the record right up front that I doubt the existence of the video myself, but it is a major topic of conversation on the blogs and so I thought it would be good to get the thoughts of the folks here.

Here's the latest version of what the tape/DVD supposedly contains from a Hillary supporter:

Michelle Obama appeared as a panelist alongside Mrs. Khadijah Farrakhan and Mrs. James Meeks.

(snipped)

For about 30 minutes, Michelle Obama launched into a rant about the evils of America, and how America is to blame for the problems of Africa. Michelle personally blamed President Clinton for the deaths of millions of Africans and said America is responsible for the genocide of the Tutsis and other ethnic groups. She then launched into an attack on "whitey", and talked about solutions to black on black crime in the realm of diverting those actions onto white America. Her rant was fueled by the crowd: they reacted strongly to what she said, so she got more passionate and enraged, and that's when she completely loses it and says things that have made the mouths drop of everyone who's seen this.

The story has been pushed by Hillary fans in the blogosphere, but there's one obvious problem. None of the Hillary fans have access to the tape itself. Larry Johnson takes it to a ridiculous level, claiming to have talked to five sources who themselves claim to have talked to people who say they saw it. That's not even hearsay, it's hearhearsay.

Still the story has stayed alive and got added impetus today as a picture was found in Jet Magazine of the panel, showing Mrs Obama, Mrs Meeks and Mrs Farrakhan in a group photo.

As I said up top, I'm going against my own confirmation bias on this one. I don't buy it. If it was out there, Hillary's people would have found it.

I saw a video that was edited where "Bush" was replaced with "Whitey". It was a really poor job. I don't know if it started the rumor or was based on the rumor though.

The "Why'd he" video? As in statements like:
Why'd he cut folks off medicaid?
Why'd he let New Orleans drown?
Why'd he do nothing about Jena?
Why'd he put us in Iraq for no reason?

Talking about George Bush, of course.
I've seen this as a possible explanation. But note, it's not established that she even said that; this is just an example of how what she might have said might have been translated.

We'll see if the video ever actually surfaces.
I'm betting it will.

Right along with a video of someone who's actually caught the Loch Ness Monster and has it on a gaffing hook on a pier.

I think this is the video you're looking for. This is the most vile, disturbing thing I've ever seen  God help us if this woman gets into the Whitey, I mean White House.

The most sober assessment I've seen of this comes, not surprisingly, from the National Review's campaign blog:
A few readers don't share my skepticism about the alleged Michelle Obama tape, and wonder why I doubt the HillBuzz account, because it is so "detailed."

Just as Robert George wrote this post on Ragged Thots about urban legends and Democratic nominee's wives, I was talking to someone who spent a good chunk of the 1988 campaign trying to track down a long-rumored photo of Kitty Dukakis throwing feces at the American flag in the 1960s. He never found it, and doubts that it ever happened, but he kept running into people who were convinced they saw it.

I'm also reminded of the Able Danger guys and Rep. Curt Weldon who were convinced they had a photo of Mohammed Atta as part of a "Brooklyn Cell" printed before 9/11. That chart was never found, and the DOD Inspector General could not find evidence to support their claims. (I wish the Able Danger guys had been telling verifiable truths.) Apparently after 9/11, the FBI received thousands of calls of people reporting seeing Atta in places they knew he could not have been; people "remembered" seeing him everywhere.

Memories play tricks on people. They remember things that didn't happen. (Things like sniper fire in Bosnia.)

If we come out and see the tape, I'll be happy to say that I was wrong, and that I was too skeptical. But the Internet is full of these kinds of vague stories and rumors, stories where the evidence "will be revealed at the right time," which is always some unspecified point in the future, never today...

yes I imagine the right wing blogs (and perhaps even some left wing) are desperate to find such a video.

Thank you for making that clear. I didn't.

Well, my thoughts are the same as those evil, evil, evil conservative types, Brainster and BPSGC. If the tape existed, we'd have seen it by now. Because the media would've broken the story, rather than arranging their timing in some subtle way around the electoral plans of Clinton or McCain.

I might change my mind --- for example, if this fabled video turns up --- but right now belief in this video requires not only a belief that the video exists, but also a belief in a Great Big Conspiracy Against Obama such that no-one will release this video until November.

I remain skeptical.

A photo of Kitty Dukakis throwing crap at the flag? That's so stupid it's hilarious.

IF this Michelle Obama video turns up -- which it most likely won't -- I predict it will contain some mildly controversial remarks that come nowhere near the anti-American, anti-whitey rant that some people are talking about.

And yet you feel it necessary to talk about it and start a thread. No agenda here...

But, Hil3ary's smear will get Swiftboated all over anyhow.

OK.

I intended,

But, Hil3ary's fanboi's smear will get Swiftboated all over anyhow.

Are you going to criticize Delphi Ote for starting a thread about Loose Change? And here I thought this was a skeptics' forum, which means that of necessity most threads should be dedicated to topics which we doubt personally.

Huh? Are you saying Hillary's behind this?

What do you know that you're not telling the rest of us, jj?

as a picture was found in Jet Magazine of the panel, showing Mrs Obama, Mrs Meeks and Mrs Farrakhan in a group photo.

The women's luncheon, at which any collection of influential Chicago area women might show up, was held in 2004.

Hence if the video is purported to say, "Why'd he let New Orleans drown?", then the comments could not have been made in 2004.

My apologies, her fans, not her. Blah.

The intent was "Hil3ary's fanboi's smear". Blah. Mutter. No, I have no idea if she's even heard the smear.
