North Carolina's Camp Lickalotta

Calling the vast majority of the west coast "tolerant" is probably a bit of an understatement.

Since it is FOR ADULTS, I think it is a great name! And, you know, there is some pleasure in pissing off stupid people intentionally...
True, its for adults. Thats what made it OK for me. But, when I told this story to my girlfriend her immediate reaction was "OMG, they just want to have a big lesbian sex camp!"

And I think thats the issue. The name intentionally leads people to the wrong (?) conclusion. Sure, its fun to have an intentionally controversial name, but if you're on borrowed land, trying to find a permanent home and trying to convince the county commissioners to approve your business license then you might find that controversial name to be a bit of a liability.

A smart business person knows when to fly under the radar and when to be provocative. These two young women poisoned their own well with their provocative camp and festival names. They should have known better.

Not a problem here in this part of NC. We have a huge gay population. The mayor of a small town nearby is gay. They should have held the camp near Asheville in Buncome county. Huge and moneyed GLBT population. Boone is pretty gay friendly too.
Anyone else get a flash of juvenile humour from that the county of "Buncome" has a huge gay population? No? Just me?

I met some people from Climax, North Carolina, who swore that the town sign had the slogan "Where people come together"

The town of Flesherton, Ontario, is known as the "Gateway to Beaver Valley"

Bigred: I dunno. My school had a recent upswing of the Alliance (LBGT) posters being defaced. I gather the high schools are still conservative here. (I've never attended, I moved after completing high school)
"the alliance?" Anyway it only takes 1 or 2 yahoos to do something idiotic like that; I don't think that makes the school "conservative" per se. Obviously can't say for sure and no doubt there are pockets of conservatism here and there, but generally speaking......

I'm only repeating what one of the Important People said in the college newspaper. :p

Whether or not they're true is left as an exercise to the interested reader.

(ETA: The alliance is a gay-lesbian-straight club at the school level. Since they're name fluctuates so broadly, I just say alliance.)

It wouldn't raise an eyebrow here. Of course 'here' is New York City, and the level of weird you'd need to achieve to raise an eyebrow is astronomical. People preaching in the streets, giant inflatable rats, and sex shops in the middle of a shopping district are just par for the course. That's practically mundane.
