I'm caffeine free!

It's still not tea, but I find I like honeybush better than rooibos. At least I'll willingly drink honeybush, whereas I find it hard to choke down a pot of rooibos.
 
I seem to have accidentally gotten The Last Jar of Postum. I noticed the shelf was bare, but didn't think about it.

I'll consider the Pero. But the stuff with a little bit of caffeine, no don't think so. I'm really trying to do this.

Among other things I gave my GF a few boxes of honeybush for xmas. Its good stuff, but she (happily) took it as some sort of overt sexual innuendo. So, now whenever I offer to make her a cup of tea...

*gulp* Plan to join a gym on Saturday--another directive from the monster doctor.

Not more than an hour after I posted this, the gym that I belonged to more than two years ago called me to see if I was interested in re-upping. I had already planned to go there tomorrow morning.

Either it's fate or coincidence......
 
Someone suggested Roastaroma to me, so I ordered some.

That was going to be my suggestion. It doesn't taste like coffee, but it has a much more robust flavor than most teas, with a good roasted, malty flavor. It will also stand up well to cream/milk, so if you ordinarily put that in your coffee, you might try adding it to the Roastaroma, as well.

I finally remembered the name of the Celestial Seasonings tea I used to like, it is called Red Zinger. It is very flavorful, but it may be an acquired taste.

Red Zinger is da bomb. If you have red hair, it also makes a nifty post-shampoo hair rinse.

White chocolate isn't chocolate.

It's better than carob.

LL, I'm so sorry. Doing without coffee and tea is one thing, but chocolate? Are you sure your doctor didn't do a stint at Abu Ghraib?
 
Give it a week or two, and the desire will pass.

Last year, I stopped drinking cola (I don't like tea or coffee), because I decided I drank too much of it.
The decision went something like this:
me: *finished* bottle of Pepsi
me: *does some quick math, realizes that the 2 medium cokes ad McDonalds during breakfast and the bottle I just finished 9my second of the day) adds up to a lot of pop*
me: *looks at clock, realizes it reads 10:00am*
me: "Screw this, I'm done."

It's been 11 months. I don't miss it.
I actually did the same thing for a month a year prior, because someone bet me I couldn't.
I'm debating cutting out soda completely (I went that way for the first 2 months after the events described above), but it's cheap and easily available, and tastes better than water.
Although V8 isn't bad.


So, my sympathies, and like I said, the cravings will pass. I know.


It takes me about two weeks as well. I've given up caffeine several times over the last few years. I'm doing it right now and am currently on Day 5. The first few days are the worst. Constant headache, feeling tired all day, no energy. Can't do any exercise at all - my body just doesn't want to do anything.

But after that two weeks, everything is fine again. I sleep better and feel better.

I go several months at a time without caffeine. But eventually I think 'I'd love a coffee' and then I'm back on it again. I think if I really had to I could give it up for good.

This is encouraging. I'm feeling like my bones are made of rubber, but that's probably still the withdrawal. The headache is receding, and I'm less crabby.

Give it another week and you'll be fine. :)

You might even find you don't need a substitute for the coffee.
 
Zero caffeine. Nil. Nada. Nothing. A void where caffeine used to be. Until further notice. I was specifically warned not to do decaf. It has caffeine.

Day 4. Headache is almost gone, crabbyness is still here.

The funny thing about caffeine is that it is a drug, and your brain adjusts over time to the regular dose it gets every day. The end effect is that you need caffeine just to feel like people do who don't drink caffeine. That boost you get from it is just the brain being taken from the less than normal state up to normal.
 
Rooibus aka red tea. No caffiene, tastes like tea.

I second this. You can also get it in Earl Grey variants as well; it's delicious.

Green tea is (effectively) caffeine free; I drink loads of that. Dirt cheap, too - gunpowder tea - so called because the leaves are rolled up into tiny balls that unfurl in hot water - is fantastic. I chop up a load of ginger and throw that in too; let it all brew and then drink it. Absolutely gorgeous.

I used to drink a massive amount of caffeine, but whittled myself down to a good sized espresso in the morning to get me going. I do feel better and sleep better for it, I have to say.

Mind you, presuming you're American, you could probably just go on drinking what they called "coffee" over there; almost all the stuff I've ever had in the states tastes like it got its flavour from once being waved near the vicinity of some beans ;)

I never had the headaches or fatigue. Just a strong desire for a cola.
Maybe there's something else in the coffee. Or maybe it's me.

Giving it up is like giving up television.
When I moved, we didn't hook up cable.
For the first couple weeks, I regreted not having it because there were shows on I wanted to watch. After that, however, I hadn't seen the commercials so I didn't know what was on, and thus didn't miss it. Very similar feeling, even if the cause is different.


So fret not, LL. In a week or so, it won't be nearly as bad. In a couple months, coffee will even taste bad (as it does to anybody with proper tastebuds).

I've read up on Bovril--it sounds disgusting. But then so does kishke.

Roastaroma tea (Celestial seasonings) is so far the best I've found in the hot caffeine free category. I did buy some roobius (Good Earth brand) and will try it out as well.

And, I have to add, that I am feeling much better.
 
If you can find it, Caffiene Free (not diet) Coca-Cola should do your cola cravings some good. It's even better with Stolichnaya Vanil in it. :)
