TAM 6 poker?

Hey, I haven't seen anything here about the now-annual poker tourney for TAM 6. Who usually organizes it? I was already thinking of planning what stupid thing I would do this year to crap out.

First rule: 7-2 offsuit is the most best hand you can start with. Bet everything you have on it.

So, if I see you betting everything you have, I can assume you are playing 7-2 offsuit? :p

Have a read of this page on my site, ive been told it's easy to follow.

I am definitely up for a poker tourney, just tell me where and when. I plan on losing most of my money on the poker tables anyway, might as well give it to someone here :)

Thanks, that page is pretty neat. Although honestly, it is not so much the play I have trouble with (the nonsense with Horatius aside), but tourney etiquette. I have never played in a formal card room, and may make a bunch of rookie mistakes.

Oh wait, there is no honesty in poker. I keep forgetting.

Not only may you assume this, I positively encourage it!

Oh, there's honesty in poker. It just costs you money to get to that point. ;)

And don't worry too much about the etiquette. After the first few beatings, most people start to figure it out! :)

Nine posts and no "Poker? I hardly even know 'er!" jokes yet? What's wrong with you people?

And I'd like to point out that I myself would never make such a crude joke like that, as I am far too sophisticated. I was forced to type it in the above paragraph for illustrative purposes only.

Thanks, I haven't played in a proper card room either, i play with a group of friends every week, honesty and etiquette are forgotten when playing with friends :) I shall be playing as much poker as i can for a couple of days before and after TAM, so i have a lot to learn myself.

As the organizer of TAM IV and TAM V as well as TAA I & II poker tourneys... Some advice:

Call the Flamingo poker room, speak to the shift boss, tell him you have 30 - 40 people who want to play a private tournament, tell him you're OK with a small house rake, tell him you've done this before at the Stardust & the Riviera. Tell him you're willing to provide volunteers to help with registration etc... Mention you want to keep the buy-in 'friendly' like $40 - $50 or so. Tell him that the attendees are really big tippers. Remind him you're sending 800 guests to his hotel.

You should be fine - the house will do all the hard work. (They'll have a quick daily tournament format which you will use to set the blinds etc...)

All you need then is to advertise at TAM / the Forum & get players.

If I could put this together from Kabul, I'm sure Mr. Ottle can suss this out. ;)

Thanks for the advice, AH :) I was hoping you'd chime in.

I contacted the Flamingo, and got a bit of a runaround on who to talk to. Finally, last week, I was told to contact the service manager for our group, and Jeff was kind enough to send me her contact info.

I have emailed her, and will call today. I'll also call the shift boss at the poker room and try to at least give those guys a heads up.

I'm thinking Thursday night, the 19th. Everyone should be there by then, and that'll keep us out of the weekend crowds.

Sorry this has taken so long, all. I haven't really been dragging my feet. Just some work drama, business travel, and (this past weekend) that bike ride for MS (and a big thanks to those of you who contributed to it!).

I'm back with no travel planned until TAM, so I can focus on this for as long as it takes.

I'll update everyone later today on how these convos went. :)

Let me know (eg. by PM) when you have a set time/date, so I can update the Activities spreadsheet.

UPDATE

I have been in touch with the people at the Flamingo, and there was a miscommunication. They thought I wanted to bring tables in to the room where all the TAM stuff would be happening -- which they can do, but they can't let us play for money.

But I got the actual plan across to my new best friend Jeannie, and she's going to talk to the casino people and find out what's involved by this time tomorrow.

When I know something, you'll know something. Or you can just pay me in advance via PayPal and skip the hassle of playing...

Cool! I'd like to defend my 2nd place win from TAM4. Just let us know Time, Place, Buy-In. :D It's not easy organizing this stuff, so I really appreciate your efforts!

I plan to be there again this year. And, I'll bring the meteorite I took from Phil in last year's tourney.

I would taunt Phil more, but I think PZ has that angle covered.

For someone who plays imaginary Craps with invisible money, it was surprising to learn I might meet up with you at the real-money poker tourney. I am heartened.

My advice on etiquette would be to hold an on-going colloquy with the dealer. Announce your every move before you make it and make sure the dealer hears you. That way you can avoid things like string bets and other mishaps. Ask lots of questions. Let the dealer know you are new to live poker. This is important. After playing with the cutthroat sharks within the JREF forums, I know for a fact that the only friend you'll have at the table is the dealer.:D

Looking forward to seeing you there, Hok!
