Dogs that know

Obviously the one dog didn't telepathically communicate that the owner was coming home to the rest of the dogs. But then there is no point in knowing that the owner is coming home prior to hearing the car since all the dogs can hear the car.

These trials are supposed to be randomized.

I want to know what happens if the owner starts home and then changes his mind. Or if he merely thinks about going home but doesn't. And I want it all to be double blind.

As part of the continuing saga of telepathic dogs begun by Rupert Sheldrake many years ago, a new Web site has started up:

http://dogsthatknow.com/

You can watch the first video, showing Tommy moving right over to his waiting spot as soon as his owner starts to return home. The dog has a telepathic link with his owner. They said that, and they wouldn't lie.

Then you can watch the second video. Tommy does it again.

Dogs have a genetic gift for being able to know how we feel. I had a small manchester, Dachsun mix male dog who knew when I was happy or sad. Sometimes when I didn't know he was there and I was feeling low he'd jump in my lap and whine in sympathy. Dogs do wonders with their relatively small brains. They make great friends.

My dog had the same skill. When I kicked him he knew I was mad. When I didn't kick him he knew I was happy. I never did figure out how ol yeller knew...

It is just as likely the dog was whining for attention. You didn't know he was there and he needed to let you know he was there.
They do not have a 'genetic gift for being able to know how we feel'.
They communicate with body language, and a little vocalisation.

arthwollipot, you have such scary eye-lazerz of DOOM! Have I ever told you that?
Yeah, I get that a lot. :)

Exactly what is the perceived benefit ( to society in general ) of a dog knowing in advance, that it's owner is on the way home ?
Where was it suggested that there is a benefit?
It wasn't... That's why I'm asking ...
Surely if this is a real ability, then it would be an evolved ability? Functions like echolocation do not evolve unless they provide a selective benefit. This opens the floor to quite a lot of questions. Here are a few:

How long have dogs had this ability? Since they were domesticated? Before? What evolutionary benefit does it provide? Do good owner-detecting dogs make better companions and are thus more likely to be bred? Do all breeds of dogs have this ability? Can good owner-detectors be bred with other good owner-detectors to improve the ability?

Seriously, once you accept owner-detection as a real ability, the questions it raises are endless.

I don't know if this happens, but it certainly is a possibility that should be explorered*.

Now I'd be downright shocked if the cat gave a crap.

My cats definitely have strong habits linked to the time of day. The 4am Morning Stock Car Cat Racing competition. The 6am Wake-up miaows. And the 6pm, 7pm, 7.14pm, 8.02pm, 8.06pm, 8.52pm and 10.02pm WannaSnuggles.

Dogs are also aware of time, to some extent. Any dog owner knows that it's the dog who instigates the evening walk.

These trials are supposed to be randomized.

Or, starts home but is stopped by someone throwing a dice/tossing a coin.

Why are Sheldrake et al so fixated on their one 'proof' of dog telepathy - bored dogs sitting at home guessing when their owners will turn up?
Hell, those old Lassie movies showed how dogs can prove their telepathy. So why don't they look for the dogs who run home and tell their owners about all the trapped children they've found?

Henry is a dog what knows.

We have two dogs. When my partner comes home they go nuts to go out the door to meet her. But not until I've already heard the car coming up the driveway.

Our dogs are either astoundingly untelepathic or deaf as a pair of posts.

Dogs sense things people can't, they even hide from earthquakes before they happen.

Yet, somehow, people on this forum think psychics don't exist.

Are you guys saying animals are above humans? You clearly don't think humans can sense things beyond the usual, or you sure wanna act like they can't.

Please come to The Amazing Meeting.

I'll start a fund raising thread, if you accept. I'm certain we can raise enough money for the attendance fee, as well as the plane ticket and hotel. People will flock to buy you dinner.

The BBC made a programme about this a while ago; they had a supposedly psychic dog which 'knew' when its owner was setting off for home from work. They set up a camera to watch the dog when it was left alone in the house. Lo and behold, when they played back the video of the time when the owner was setting off, it showed that the dog jumped up and went to wait by the window for the owner.

However when they filmed the dog for the whole day, it rapidly became apparent that the dog jumped up and went to look out of the window every quarter of an hour. The fact that one of these times was at the same time as the owner set out was pure coincidence.

Two words - 'confirmation bias'
