Well public servant in this sense means that ultimately they work for the public, not that they are our slaves. People confuse the ideas, and think that they can boss around the cops. They don't realise the check is that they have the ability to vote out the Mayor who in turn can shake up the police force. It is more an issue of the improper interpretation of the law on the part of those who pick fights with the cops.

Slightly off topic, but back in the day when I was a volunteer cop, I used to sorta enjoy it when someone would say something like " my taxes pay your salary" and I could say " well, I'm a volunteer and I'm protecting this community for free". Usually took the wind right out of their sails.

My roomates back in the early 90's were paying their tuition at college by working the desks at the various dorms. Every now and then some brash undergrad bozo would try to push his way past him and into the dorm with the comment: "My tuition fees pay your salary".

One of them did the calculation.

After that bit of math, he would always keep $.03 on his person, and when they made that comment he would toss the money on the desk and say "Here's your share back, now go **** **** yourself!"

His supervisor took it well.

Usually it would just result in turning what was initially going to be a warning into a traffic ticket (or sometimes an arrest). Some people just don't know when to keep their mouths shut.

That's a really good point. Next time the President or some other high ranking government official visits your area, you should run up to them really quickly and ask.

And reach quickly into your jacket to pull out your ID to show that you are a US citizen.

Well, her argument is basically, "The police failed to protect my rights by not forcing protesters to allow me to harass them during their peaceful protest."

That's such a strong, unassailable, logical argument that no counter-argument is possible. We expect this matter to go all the way to the Supreme Court, resulting in a complete overhaul of police procedures nationwide. As a result, new laws will be passed. One of them will require everyone to bow down whenever a camera is pointed in their direction, to protect the universal absolute rights of photographers to an unimpeded view. Failing to dodge out of the way of a camera shoved in one's direction will be a misdemeanor, and if such failure to yield to a camera results in even the slightest physical contact with the device, it will be a felony. Also, any protesters who do not allow any person to mingle with them unimpeded, regardless of their demeanor, smell, or incompatibility of their message with the aims of the protest, will be immediately arrested or dispersed with tear gas and riot clubs.

Of course, the truth movement will complain about these "Christie's Laws" and call them "repressive" or "police state tactics," but really those new laws will just be enforcing for everyone under all circumstances the rights that Christie herself bravely stood up for for herself that day.
