I just wanted to share something that has been bothering me a bit since December. I am relatively new to the forums, only recently posting here, but lurking on-and-off for about a year. I am a logical, rational person. That being said, I am tolerant of other peoples' beliefs in the paranormal because it is quite dominant in my family. My grandmother is a self-proclaimed fortune teller and my mother continues to believe in a variety of New Age woo such as astrology and crystals and fortune telling and such.
So where is this story going? Well, in December, a friend and I went to a fund-raiser for a local radio station, KRQQ, here in Tucson. They were raising money for less fortunate during the holiday season, and we wanted to support the cause. They had gathering of people there doing "toe readings" and Alison Dubois was there promoting her new book and signing copies. Well, since I had heard she was a well-known medium, I figured I would purchase a copy of her book and have it signed for my grandmother as a gift for Christmas.
Ms. Dubois had taken a lunch break (I guess all the talking spirits around her had made her hungry
), and so I watched my friend get a toe reading, which was a bunch of cold readings involving the reader staring at her toes. I waited for Ms. Dubois to return for nearly an hour, along with about 30 other people. During that time, I was trying to think how I wanted the book personalized, since I knew my grandmother would really appreciate it, and I decided something along the lines of "You are always surrounded by the ones you love" would be sentimental without being too irrational. When she arrived back from lunch, we casually lined up to get our books signed. After waiting in line for about 20 more minutes, I got to the front. I told her my grandmother believed in spirits and I was buying the book for her and what I would like the message to say. I had been watching her during the other signings, and noticed she quickly judged people when they approached, giving some a few minutes of her time, and being cordial, whereas with others she simply signed and handed the book back. When she looked up at me, she got a look on her face as if she didn't approve of me. She asked my grandmother's name (so she was listening to what I had said), and then quickly signed it "You are not alone!" and handed the book back to me. It had never been more apparent than that moment to me that she did not, and had never really, communicated with spirits (not that I thought she had to begin with), and that money was her only motivation. I had already paid for the book, so what did she care what she wrote in it. I sent the book to my grandmother anyways, but it has always bothered me that she didn't even care what I wanted written in the book and that she uses these peoples' lack of rational thought to make money.
Knowing that she has threatened litigation to Mr. Randi already just for using a picture of her in SWIFT, I shudder to think what she might do to me to writing a negative review of her attitude. A truly nasty woman.
