From S News comes this report:
Some states have siezed the initiative:
Needless to say, this is going to be an issue in the upcoming election. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have already come out against it. Campaigning in Houston, Texas, Obama referred to the proposal as "amending the Constitution for trivial reasons." During a question-and-answer session in Dallas, Clinton said, "This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. You say Senator Obama supports it?"Still stinging from criticism of from his recent gaffe in which he referred to the capital of Wisconsin as "Wisconsin City," President George W. Bush has proposed amending the U.S. Constitution to require states to name their capitals in a way that is easy to remember.
"The capital of Oklahoma is already Oklahoma City, the capital of Iowa is already Iowa City, and of course everyone knows the capital of New York is New York City," Bush said. "So some states have already adopted this sensible naming convention."
The proposal is not a new one. While Governor of Texas, Bush had proposed renaming the captial of Texas, Austin, as Texas City. The plan was shelved when Bush was informed that there already was a city near Galveston called Texas City.
Some states have siezed the initiative:
In Utah, legislation has been introduced to rename the capital from Salt Lake City to Utah City. Comparable proposals are in the works for Alabama, Mississippi and Montana. Representatives from Arizona, home of Republican presidential contender John McCain, have said that they will give the matter serious consideration.
McCain has said he "tentatively supports" the measure, adding "You know, my memory is not as good as it once was, and this proposal will make things easier not only for me, but for a lot of seniors nation-wide."
