Michael Stipe is gay?

But how can this be?

No, kidding aside, although the idea is good and I guess it can help some people but wasn't it obvious like ever since the eighties? Anybody seen the video Pop Song 89? I mean Elton John, KD Lang, Pink... do they really need to come out of the closet? It didn't stop any of them from having great success in their careers, and it sure didn't stop me from buying REM albums.

There's alot of talk about homosexuality these days in the forum but shouldn't this be a non-issue by now? Why would someone have to say that and have it reported in the news?

As I said the idea of helping others is a good thing but shouldn't everyone's response to a headline like this be just: Meh

Pardalis, this may also shock you: Liberace was gay also... ;)

Really the only one that shocked me was Rob Halford.

Then I went back and took a fresh listen to some Judas Priest lyrics.

And in equally surprising news, REM have a new album out in 2 weeks.

I'm sure it's all just a coincidence...

Nonsense, he won a libel case where a news paper claimed he was gay, so legally he was straight or he committed purgery.
Then I guess he committed perjury, because he was gay. One of his boyfriends even sued him for palimony after the breakup.

And I'll note both of the lawsuits he filed against tabloids that purported him to be gay were in the 1950's, when such information could ruin a career.

My problem with that is that at that time that was news and he should not have won as, whatever happened to his career (and, in absolute fairness, I have seen and heard him and his audience was the one he deserved. I am not it)they were correct. No libel was done.

Hell, I knew that since 1982!

I heard him interviewed a few years ago, after he was openly out, and he speculated that anyone who was paying attention already knew and that's why the "revelation" didn't really affect his fans. He said something like "this guy wearing the tight leather pants, a leather vest, a leather hat, yeah, he's straight...".

I heard a rumor that the Village People were also gay, every one of them! :boggled:

I'm pretty sure Pink is not a homosexual. She's married to a man.

I don't care who is sleeping with who. It's none of my business. I don't think it's the media's business either, so "outing" someone who is not ready to be open about their sexual orientation is morally wrong, in my opinion.

Finding out someone I respect and admire is gay would never change my high regard for them.

Pierre Trudeau Quote,December 21, 1967. (From CBC archives)

A young, charismatic Pierre Trudeau, acting as Justice Minister, has introduced his controversial Omnibus bill in the House of Commons. The bill calls for massive changes to the Criminal Code of Canada. Trudeau makes an appeal for the decriminalization of 'homosexual acts' performed in private, telling reporters in this CBC Television clip "there's no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation." Trudeau goes on to say "what's done in private between adults doesn't concern the Criminal Code."

And no one could ever accuse M Trudeau of being a homsexual -- closet or otherwise. :D

Yeah, in retrospect it's a matter of "how the :rule10 did I miss that?"

Yeah that's what I wanted to ask with this thread. Does the sexual orientation of the artist really have an effect on the sales of their music?

I mean it was always obvious for Stipe and Elton John, not to mention George Michael (I was six years old and knew he was gay and I didn't even know what sex was) and they had and continue to have success.
