Should be legal, and cheap enough for me to buy some. I don't have $80,000 a year for nookie :(

Yeah, that was exactly what I was getting at. You want legal prostitution? Go to a state where its legal. Want it legal in your state? Start a campaign.

To be fair, I don't see anyone suggesting any more than that. I certainly don't see anyone arguing for a federal statute that prohibits the states from making prostitution illegal.

True, I may have read too much into the question (and JoeE helped). But, I've had these conversations before where people complained loudly about prostitution being illegal as if there had been a prostitution-prohibition amendment to the constitution. The fact is prostitution IS legal... in parts of the country.

As a wise and learned man, Sir George of Carlin, once asked:

"Selling is legal. ****ing is legal. So why isn't selling ****ing legal?"

Why should it be illegal to sell something that is perfectly legal to give away free?

I think the government is missing a golden opportunity here. If they were to make prostitution legal and safe and then tax the holy bejesus out of it (the ultimate sin tax), they might make a fair amount of revenue off of it.
Or drive it underground. Or drive it to states that don't tax it. Think New "Live Free or Die" Hampshire, with no sales tax. Or Texas, with no income tax. Nevada only taxes it at the local level - no sales tax (and, of course, the pros pay their income tax).

How would crack whores report their taxable income? Would they keep ledgers?

One from guy named "John" for 69
Two from guy named "John" for golden shower.

It's like legalizing gambling, I don't know but I feel there's something wrong about the government profiting from questionable behaviour.

Do I really need to point it out to you?

I have an idea what you might find questionable about it but didn't want to make any assumptions.

ETA: So, to answer your question, unless you want me to assume your position is based in irrationality, yes, you need to point it out to me.

There's nothing questionable about it. Adults should be allowed to spend their money on whatever they like as long as it does not hurt anyone else. By making these things legal it actually makes things better for everyone. The odds for gambling in Vegas are much much better than playing in a state lottery. It's not the government profiting from questionable behaviour that is the problem, it's when they choose to hold a monopoly on it that makes it unfair.

Odds against you on a well laid craps bet in a casino: ~-1.5%
Odds against you playing state run "numbers" games: usually -50%

OK, but I haven't really thought this issue through, I do think the legalizing proponents have good arguments, like it could lead to better control (I'm not quite sure how it works in Denmark, if it did make a difference).

For one I just think paying for sex doesn't help women feel better about themselves, it even exarcebates the whole issue of women being treated as objects and goods. There's also the whole issue of adultery, which has more to do with my own personal values I admit.

I don't know about the US, or specifically Nevada, but here in Québec The provincial government regulates gambling, which to me is hypocritical. Gambling has generated alot of problems in our society, addiction and broken families and so forth.

I'm with Pardalis on this.

A cliched argument it may be, but what young girl announces that when she grows up she will want to go into prostitution?

The well worn discussion around women being put in a position of power is only declared by the frame of mind of the subject(s). Whilst fat, old, pathetic men may be what we imagine as regulars, they may not see themselves as that.

The suffolk murders gave me pause to think of my position on this. If prostitution was legalised, those women would probably be alive today. However, if prostitution was legalised, Steve Wright would probably still be the man he is today.

Right, but bare in mind this is only the libertarian position.

What qualifies as "questionable behavior?"

I'm an avid real-money poker player. I also occasionally enjoy other casino games, like blackjack and roulette. What's wrong with that?

My belief is that prostitution should be illegal, but neither of the choices was anywhere close to my reasoning. So, I voted Planet X.
