Terry Pratchett: An Embuggerance

I'm torn. On the one hand, I want him writing nonstop, and outlining at least 70 Discworld books for someone else to write after he's out of the game. On the other hand, I hope he appreciates every moment left with his family and friends. On the other other hand, I think that staying mentally active could help him fight the effects of his illness, so he should keep writing as much as he can. On the other other other hand, life is too short to change based on things that are out of your control. On the other other other other hand, I want more goddamned books out of him. And, clearly, I also need more hands... :(

Sad news indeed. But as long as he's holding the "I ain't dead yet"-sign I'm not going to bury him.

All the best wishes to him and his family. And would the scientists please get working on those meds?

I feel like a bad person.

I am very sad for him and his family, he's always seemed like such a nice man whenever I've seen/heard/read about him, and I've never really heard anyone contradict that.

I feel very sefish though, because I'm somewhat concerned that I'm going to run out of DW and TP novels to read. I was kind of hoping that he was going to live much longer than I was so I'd not have to face that prospect.

Best wishes Pterry.

Let's not write Mr Pratchett off. Yes, he's ill, yes, he's going to die. But as he says, he's got some books left in him and he ain't dead yet. Let's enjoy his presence on the planet while he's here.

Well said! It's not over yet, and eventually we all die. This doesn't mean we should start the funerals early, does it? Hell no! So write him a nice letter telling him to take it easy, let him know how much you appreciate him, and keep reading his books and spreading the good word around. After all, shouldn't that be what life is about anyway instead of moping towards the end?

:D

I agree. A friend of mine lost his wife to cancer last week. She knew for a while she wasn't going to recover, but she didn't let that stop her - she worked right up to the end, went on trips and enjoyed her family. Yes, it's sad that Mr Pratchett will shuffle off this mortal coil earlier than we would like, but he's still here at the moment, so let's enjoy him while we've got him. The mourning comes later.

Any bets on how long it will be before the usual band of homoeopaths, acupuncturists, Chinese herbalists and so on step in where the high-end brain chemists fear to tread?

In the case of pratchett never. Bearhugger's Homeopathic Sipping Whiskey?

In the more general case since a lot of people involved don't have a vast amount of disposable income I suspect and coverage will be limited.

Perfectly put.

And if anyone wants to enjoy all things JREF and Pratchetty.

Have a smile here:

Oh, I know Pratchett is gloriously anti-woo. I love the part where he describes Magrat's homoeopathic potions, then mentions they usually work - because witches' potions tend to work, whatever. But there is a depressing tendency of the woos to jump publicly on bandwagons even where the subject himself disapproves.

Rolfe.

I suspect you're biased.

Just because he recommended a horse-doctor, Doughnut Jimmy, instead of a healer for the sick Vetinari.

;)

Does that make Jimmy, Vetinari's veterinarian?
