Theories on why GWB was elected president...anyone?

Get a life stevie. The 9/11 terrorist act was obviously real. But in proportion to the risk, the Iraq war has now killed more Americans, terrorism risk is greater, not less, and even Bush gives that rant on a regular basis, "be afraid, be very afraid".

Perhaps my rant on the gullibility of the American populace to marketing and political talking points is something you'd rather not think about?

So tell me, in the scheme of things, when is the terrorist attack which killed 3,000+ people 6+ years ago going to fade from your list of priorities? Would that be when Bush can no longer use it to motivate the sheeple to support the Iraq war? Or would it be when Bush can no longer use it to manipulate the sheeple to support his leadership?

Tell me, stevie, what do you think when Bush makes the bizarre argument that his veto is really the Democratic Party's negligence putting the country at risk by not supporting amnesty for the telecom companies' cooperation with the Bush's program of illegal wiretapping and spying on American citizens?

Just what does it take for people like you to recognize the manipulative tactics of using the terrorist threat for political gain?

Sympathy, fellow-feeling

I think that when Bush made a fool of himself in the debates, a huge block of voters felt that they could identify with him. He's a (seemingly, if you are very drunk) straight-talker, he is just being beat up on by this know-it-all smarty pants Democrat. What I saw in the debate was a sound trouncing of W, but I guess a lot of people saw a guy they could identify with.

I think in the last Presidential election W used fear, and it worked for him.

I think Bush got in through voter manipulation, and through the Supreme Court (which to my knowledge voted entirely along party lines -- there apparently were simply more Republicans). Even electorally Bush won by 500 something votes, but more than 20,000 were questionable. Lots of blacks were put on the convict list so they could not vote, and the polls were closed down in some areas.

In 2004 Bush got in again using the Diebold machines to make small adjustments in key areas to beat Kerry.

Bush got in illegitimately twice. In my opinion he should have never gotten in back in 2000. If Gore got in things would have probably been a lot better

(I'm going to rant now)
9/11 would have been stopped long before it got to the point that the attack was launched because Bush's administration deliberately did everything they could to NOT do anything to stop the hijackers before they did anything allowing them to attack us so he could capitalize on the tragedy to roll back civil rights, and invade countries (Afghanistan was invaded to secure an oil pipeline, and Iraq was invaded because of it's oil and because of it's threat to Israel... Cheney and his buddies in the oil industry already had plans to carve up Iraq before 9/11 even happened)
(/End Rant)

I think in the last Presidential election W used fear, and it worked for him.

That was one of the tactics that at least allowed him to get close enough to Kerry for the voter manipulation to work reasonably well.

In fact he had the security alerts raised a level whenever they were debating serious issues. He knew quite well that fear would make people more likely to support his agenda.

Tell me, stevie, what do you think when Bush makes the bizarre argument that his veto is really the Democratic Party's negligence putting the country at risk by not supporting amnesty for the telecom companies' cooperation with the Bush's program of illegal wiretapping and spying on American citizens?

Am I the only person who noticed that Bush has claimed that American lives and security are worth less than telecom immunity? He says that he needs the bill to keep us safe and alive, but he'd rather have no bill than have no immunity. Therefore, Bush places immunity higher on his list of priorities than he does security.

And people are stupid enough to support him!

Joe Ellison,

That's actually an interesting argument. But I think when he said that, he was trying to put pressure on Congress for "it's either this way or the highway" hoping they wouldn't say "The highway" and give into his demands.

INRM

Am I the only person who noticed that Bush has claimed that American lives and security are worth less than telecom immunity? ...
No, I think one of the Congresspersons noted it as well. Too bad the news media and the Bush supporters missed it though.

Don't forget that Gore was called a "liar" for things that he never said, for things that the MEDIA lied about. Bush, on the other hand, was treated like an honest person while he lied about just about everything... and Gore was also attacked for daring to point out where Bush's numbers didn't add up. The deck was stacked against Gore from the start, even before the Florida election fraud by the Republicans.

Right. Gore said he "created" the internet, but the dastardly media said he "invented" it. Gore said he was the inspiration for the book/movie "Love Story," but the press said he didn't look like Ryan O'neal.

At the DNC in 1996, Gore gave a speech about his only sister's painful death from lung cancer in 1984. This is the same guy who said, 'I've raised tobacco ... I've shredded it, spiked it,... and sold it." He was still accepting contributions from tobacco companies as late as 1990.

Of course the fact that Gore's SAT scores were lower than Bush 43's was not something the liberal media mentioned at all.

For Ziggy and Gumboot:

Agreement On US 3.2 Billion Gas Pipeline Project Signed
PakNews.com - December 28, 2002

Pakistan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan on Friday signed here a framework agreement for a US $ 3.2 billion gas pipeline project passing through the three countries.

The ceremony was held at the Presidential Palace with the three leaders, Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali, President Saparmurat Niyazov of Turkmenistan and Afghan President Hamid Karzai signing the document.

The framework agreement defines legal mechanism for setting up a consortium to build and operate the pipeline.

According to a study by Asian Development Bank (ADB), the 1460 km pipeline would use gas reserves at Dauletabad fields in Turkmenistan, which has world's fifth largest reserves, while passing through Afghanistan into Pakistan.

The three countries had earlier signed a trilateral agreement to develop a natural gas and oil pipeline from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan into Pakistan in May this year, during the first trilateral summit in Islamabad.

The three countries are laying great importance on the project as it could provide much needed boost to their economies.

*Editors Note | Since September 11th, 2001, there has been intense speculation regarding Bush administration negotiations with the Taliban regarding this very project prior to the attacks. American petroleum giant Unocal very much wanted this project for years, but it was stymied in 1998 after bin Laden blew up two American embassies in Africa, causing the Taliban to be diplomatically isolated. There are a number of reports that describe a reinvigoration of this pipeline plan after Bush took office, and further describe the Bush administration's negotiations with the Taliban including threats of war if the project was not allowed to pass through Afghanistan. Some say these threats, in the name of the pipeline, triggered the 9/11 attacks. The Taliban is gone, Afghan President Harmid Karzai is a former Unocal consultant, and the pipeline deal is finally done. - wrp)

The BBC reported on the deal as well. Central Asia pipeline deal signed
The chief difficulty will be actually finding the money to build the pipeline.

The Asian Development Bank is carrying out a study for the project.

But investors will be very cautious about putting serious money into Afghanistan when the central government in Kabul still has only limited influence in the regions the pipeline would cross.

AFGHANISTAN EYES A PIPELINE, BUT PROSPECTS LOOK DIM; Halima Kazem 6/06/02

So the deal is a go but investors are not, so far as I could tell.

Michael Moore reported that Karzai worked for Unocal and was involved in Taliban/Texas/Bush/Cheney/oil pipeline negotiations.

Free Republic claimed Karzai never worked for Unocal based on Unocal's and Karzai's denial.
A Fisking of the Afghan Pipeline Conspriacy Theory in Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" - Free Republic | July 26, 2003 | Shermy

Counterpunch countered:
From ENRON Entanglements to UNOCAL Bringing the Taliban to Texas and Controlling Afghanistan
According to a December 17, 1997 article in the British paper, The Telegraph, headlined, "Oil barons court Taliban in Texas," the Taliban was about to sign a "£2 billion contract with an American oil company to build a pipeline across the war-torn country. ... The Islamic warriors appear to have been persuaded to close the deal, not through delicate negotiation but by old-fashioned Texan hospitality. ... Dressed in traditional salwar khameez,Afghan waistcoats and loose, black turbans, the high-ranking delegation was given VIP treatment during the four-day stay."

At the same time, U.S. government documents reveal that the Taliban were harboring Osama bin Laden as their "guest" since June 1996....

...As reported in Le Monde, the new Afghan government's head, Hamid Karzai, formerly served as a UNOCAL consultant. Only nine days after Karzai's ascension, President Bush nominated another UNOCAL consultant and former Taliban defender, Zalmay Khalilzad, as his special envoy to Afghanistan.
The French paper, Le Monde, seems to be the source of Michael Moore's information on Karzai.

Hamid Karzai
Several sources, most notably the documentary film Fahrenheit 9/11, have reported that Karzai once worked as a consultant for the oil company Unocal. Spokesmen for both Unocal and Karzai have denied any such relationship. The claim appears to have originated in the December 9, 2001 issue of the French newspaper Le Monde. Some have suggested that Karzai was confused with U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad.

Then there is the Centre for Research on Globalization's investigation.

Afghanistan, the Taliban and the Bush Oil Team
According to Afghan, Iranian, and Turkish government sources, Hamid Karzai, the interim Prime Minister of Afghanistan, was a top adviser to the El Segundo, California-based UNOCAL Corporation which was negotiating with the Taliban to construct a Central Asia Gas (CentGas) pipeline from Turkmenistan through western Afghanistan to Pakistan.

Karzai, the leader of the southern Afghan Pashtun Durrani tribe, was a member of the mujaheddin that fought the Soviets during the 1980s. He was a top contact for the CIA and maintained close relations with CIA Director William Casey, Vice President George Bush, and their Pakistani Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) Service interlocutors. Later, Karzai and a number of his brothers moved to the United States under the auspices of the CIA. Karzai continued to serve the agency's interests, as well as those of the Bush Family and their oil friends in negotiating the CentGas deal, according to Middle East and South Asian sources.

When one peers beyond all of the rhetoric of the White House and Pentagon concerning the Taliban, a clear pattern emerges showing that construction of the trans-Afghan pipeline was a top priority of the Bush administration from the outset. Although UNOCAL claims it abandoned the pipeline project in December 1998, the series of meetings held between U.S., Pakistani, and Taliban officials after 1998, indicates the project was never off the table.

Quite to the contrary, recent meetings between U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan Wendy Chamberlain and that country's oil minister Usman Aminuddin indicate the pipeline project is international Project Number One for the Bush administration. Chamberlain, who maintains close ties to the Saudi ambassador to Pakistan (a one-time chief money conduit for the Taliban), has been pushing Pakistan to begin work on its Arabian Sea oil terminus for the pipeline.

So you have a claim, some sources, a denial, the right and the left's view. You have the Taliban Texas visit, though the claim in "59 Deceits" is it wasn't a visit to Bush (then Texas governor, to talk oil deals.
Proposed Unocal Pipeline in Afghanistan - Deceits 27-30

This segment is introduced with the question, "Or was the war in Afghanistan really about something else?" The "something else" is shown to be a Unocal pipeline.

Moore mentions that the Taliban visited Texas while Bush was governor, over a possible pipeline deal with Unocal. But Moore doesn’t say that they never actually met with Bush or that the deal went bust in 1998 and had been supported by the Clinton administration.

Labash, Weekly Standard.

Moore asserts that the Afghan war was fought only to enable the Unocal company to build a pipeline. In fact, Unocal dropped that idea back in August 1998.
Yes, but that doesn't mean Bush or other oil companies dropped the idea. And Kristol's Weekly Standard is about as credible as Faux Noise. (Unocal merged with Chevron in 05.)

59 Deceits continues:
Jonathan Foreman, "Moore’s The Pity," New York Post, June 23, 2004.

In December 1997, a delegation from Afghanistan’s ruling and ruthless Taliban visited the United States to meet with an oil and gas company that had extensive dealings in Texas. The company, Unocal, was interested in building a natural gas line through Afghanistan. Moore implies that Bush, who was then governor of Texas, met with the delegation.

But, as Gannett News Service points out, Bush did not meet with the Taliban representatives. What’s more, Clinton administration officials did sit down with Taliban officials, and the delegation’s visit was made with the Clinton administration’s permission.

McNamee, Chicago Sun-Times.

Whatever the motive, the Unocal pipeline project was entirely a Clinton-era proposal: By 1998, as the Taliban hardened its positions, the U.S. oil company pulled out of the deal. By the time George W. Bush took office, it was a dead issue—and no longer the subject of any lobbying in Washington....

...On December 9, 2003, the new Afghanistan government did sign a protocol with Turkmenistan and Pakistan to facilitate a pipeline. Indeed, any Afghani government (Taliban or otherwise) would rationally seek the revenue that could be gained from a pipeline. But the protocol merely aims to entice corporations to build a new pipeline; no corporation has has agreed to do so. Nor does the new proposed pipeline even resemble Unocal's failed proposal; the new pipeline would the bring oil and gas from the Caspian Sea basin, whereas Unocal's proposal involved deposits five hundred miles away, in eastern Turkmenistan.
Again, I find this critique of Moore's 911 documentary discredits only some of Moore's stretching of what the data actually supported vs Moore speculating beyond the data. But the fact the pipeline deal was signed very soon after Karzai took office does support Moore's contention Karzai and the pipeline and Bush were connected before we invaded Afghanistan.

And the Iraq Oil Law written by Bremer and pushed through in Iraq despite objections from the Iraq Parliament adds evidence to Moore's accusations about oil as a reason Bush invaded both countries as well.

I'm afraid you've been reading too many right wing bed time stories.

According to the WA Post,
Gore arrived at Harvard with an impressive 1355 SAT score, 625 verbal and 730 math, compared with Bush's 1206 total from 566 verbal and 640 math.
I assume they are talking about Bush 43.

According to Salon .com the lie about Gore's Internet comment originated from this comment:
But things that "everybody knows" are always worth examining for defects. And the "Gore claims he invented the Net" trope is so full of holes that it makes you wish there were product recalls for bad information.

Gore never claimed to have "invented" the Internet. What he said was:

During my service in the United States Congress I took the initiative in creating the Internet.

As my colleague Jake Tapper carefully reported here last year, at worst that statement is a minor exaggeration of Gore's legislative record -- and miles away from the "I built it from scratch!" lie into which it has been twisted. ...

...Several of the people who could claim to have "invented" the Internet, or key pieces of its protocols -- in particular, Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn -- are out there on the Net today defending Gore, asserting that he was the politician in Washington who took the "initiative" to support the Net in its early days.

Implicit in their argument is a broader awareness of what it took to create the Internet. Anything as successful as the Net is not and cannot be successful as technology alone; technology does not exist in a vacuum. And just as the Internet required the services of brains like Kahn and Cerf and all the others who contributed code to its foundations, it also needed bureaucratic and legislative patrons.

It took social engineers as well as software engineers to build the Net. And that may be why the response to Gore's original statement was so savage: Not because his claim was a lie, but because it was a truth that a lot of people today are trying to forget or bury.

The Internet didn't spring full-blown out of some scientists' heads, nor did it just grow, like some techno-Topsy powered by the mysterious magic of the marketplace. It emerged from the world of government-subsidized university research, and every step of the way along its passage from academic network to global information infrastructure was shepherded by the state. As the Net's parent, the government didn't do everything right; but it managed to nurture the network through its youth -- then get out of the way once it was mature enough to move out of its parents' digs and shack up with private industry.

Libertarians and conservatives are uncomfortable admitting this. Their vision of Net history is a stirring saga of markets overwhelming states, technological imperatives vanquishing stifling bureaucracies and free information "routing around" government blockages. There's some truth in this vision -- but it's only part of the story.
So, Gore's comment is defended by the actual people involved in the actual early days of the development of the Internet.

As for the tobacco money, it hardly looks like the typical corporate payout from this source:
* President Clinton does not accept tobacco PAC money. Vice President Gore accepted a total of $16,440 between 1979 and June 1995.
Center for Responsive Politics, as cited in USA TODAY, July 3, 1996, p. A5.
Wow, 16 thousand dollars over 16 years.

My error. Bush's SAT scores were higher than Bill Bradley's, Paul Wellstone's, and John Kerry's, but not higher than Al Gore.

Bush qualified to fly the very unforgiving F-104 Starfighter.

Kerry qualified to drive a Low Tech Swift Boat.

Gore operated a Smith Corona for Stars and Stripes in Saigon.

Let's examine Gore's penchant for faux pas. During a stop at Monticello in 1993, Gore pointed to carvings of Washington and Ben Franklin and asked the curator: "Who are those guys?" Even though he was surrounded by a throng of print and media reporters, only 3 papers reported Gore's failure to recognize two of our nation's founding fathers.

AlGore: September, 1991, speech on the Senate floor, "A Zebra cannot change its spots."

AlGore: "I always had a very vivid and clear sense that men and women were entirely and completely equal-if not more so."

AlGore: Claimed his mother used to to sing to him lullabies as an infant, including "Look for The Union Label." Except that ditty was not written until 1975.

AlGore paid $15K to Naomi Wolf for lessons on how to dress.

In a 1994 speech, AlGore manged to reverse the nation's motto, "E Pluribus Unum- out of one many."

AlGore called the then Chicago Bulls forward Michael Jackson. The Washington Post attributed this error to Bush 43 in an article called "Bush Gaffes Are Back as Debates Near." When The Post found out it was Gore who made this gaffe, The Post was not interested in pursuing the matter.

What "lie" about Gore's Internet comment? He said he had "taken the initiative to create the Internet." "Create" is synonym for "invent." AlGore's sole involvement with the Internet, creating or inventing, was to vote with a majority of Senators, a majority of House members, and the President, to support government funding for the Defense Department's development of the Internet.

AlGore never won an Oscar, either.

Don't even try it. If you like it (but you won't like it) we can go Faux pas for Faux pas Dubya against anyone you want. We can even start out easy. Dubya vs Britney Spears.

Dubya is the biggest dummy to ever occupy the office of President of the United States. He's also the biggest disaster and there will be no spinning of it in hindsight when he is gone. It's that clear.

He is a half wit fortunate son frat boy who I suspect has never in his life even read one book cover to cover without having someone read it to him and turn the pages. If he ever did do well on SAT's or grades in college it could only be because he paid someone to take the exams for him. But I suspect he wouldn't have even been able to pull that off on his own. He probably had is daddy pay someone to take them for him.

The point is not that Bush 43 speaks English as if it were a second language, which he does, but that the liberal media, which could never resist printing or airing Bush 43's embarrassing gaffes, desperately wanted to inflate Gore's intelligence and, whenever possible, ignore any events that made Gore appear as dumb or dumber than Bush 43. The fact that the media looked incredible in their attempt to accomplish this feat is still a story ripe for ridicule.

The fact that you insist the only way Bush 43 could have superior SAT scores than Kerry, Bradley and Wellstone is by cheating reveals your own ignorance and inherent prejudices.

The fact is that Bush graduated from Yale, even if he was a legacy, and graduated from Harvard Business School. Whether graduates of Ivy League schools are any better educated than any other American University in good standing, is not a rumor started by Bush, but rather an historically accepted notion. The fact that this is a myth is not Bush 43's fault.

The 911 "truth" grunions insist Bush 43 masterminded 911. You insist that Bush 43 can barely read. Both of these observations are far enough out on the margins of plausibility that they meet at the same absurd ditsy conclusion.

Maybe Bush 43's daddy paid "someone" to fly the 104-Starfighter? I mean, how could Bush 43 pass the rigorous flight exam to operate the fastest aircraft of its time aside from the SR71.

I guess his daddy paid "someone" to pose for him during debates as well.

Bush 43 is just a guy with average intelligence who happened to defeat both Gore and Kerry in Presidential elections.

Gore wasn't President so how much time should the media spend on him? He was cheated remember? Now do you really believe Dubya is smarter then Gore? Please.

What's so ditsy about Dubya being a propped up stooge? That's the most believable part of any conspiracy I've heard of.

Maybe Bush 43's daddy paid "someone" to fly the 104-Starfighter? I mean, how could Bush 43 pass the rigorous flight exam to operate the fastest aircraft of its time aside from the SR71.

I don't know. Maybe he was smarter back when he was drunk and high. It's hard to get pulled over for drunk driving when your flying isn't it? What they really needed to pay someone to do is take his physical and drug test for him. Maybe he didn't have any sober friends back then though huh?

I guess his daddy paid "someone" to pose for him during debates as well.

If he did I hope he got his money back. Holy Mackerel. You have got to be kidding with that one.

Bush 43 is just a guy with average intelligence who happened to defeat both Gore and Kerry in Presidential elections.

And have a brother the Governor of Florida. Don't forget that one. Well I guess he really had a little more then that. He had all the idiots who just automatically vote for whatever is running under the letter R. They would have even voted for a monkey. Hell… some would say they did.

So the deal is a go but investors are not, so far as I could tell.

Without investors, there is no pipeline. Without investors, there's no profit to be made, no paybacks to be had. Why on earth would anyone conclude that we were motivated to go to war for a pipeline nobody actually wants to build?

It's not happening. And it didn't motivate our involvement in Afghanistan.

Gore wasn't President so how much time should the media spend on him? He was cheated remember? Now do you really believe Dubya is smarter then Gore? Please.

What are you talking about? Back in 2000, neither Gore nor Bush 43 was President.

None of these guys were president either but I'd love to see Dubya in a game of Jeopardy against any of them. Hell... let Britney play too.

Since Brittany is your touchstone for intellect, perhaps you should submit her name as a write in candidate for the Democratic ticket.

The fact that Dubya graduated from both Yale and Harvard isn't a credit to Dubya. It's an embarrassment to Yale and Harvard.

Both these schools graduate thousands of ill-educated people. So what else is new? How many become President? Too many.

What's so ditsy about Dubya being a propped up stooge? That's the most believable part of any conspiracy I've heard of.

Bush 43 is propped up, but Hillary is not?

I don't know.

Finally, an honest appraisal of your command of government. politics, and Bush 43's history.

If he did I hope he got his money back. Holy Mackerel. You have got to be kidding with that one.

Really? He destroyed Ann Richards in debates for the Texas governorship.

Well, we shall see how having an ex President hubby will benefit Hillary. How does it feel losing to a "monkey" ...twice?
