Theories on why GWB was elected president...anyone?

The relentlessly pro-Bush media in 2000 was also a major factor. Every Gore misstep, real or imagined, was given endless repetition by the news media, who glossed over or ignored all the skeletons in the Bush past.

Insider trading, cocaine use, paying for an illegal abortion, dodgy National Guard service, no Bush scandal was too big for the news networks to ignore.

Meanwhile, the so-called "liberal media" went after Gore like a pack of crazed hyenas...

Bush became president because of an unfortunate misstep by Gore. Gore asked for recounts in only specific counties in Florida. Had he asked for a recount of the entire state, the Supreme Court would not have stopped the process, and Gore would have prevailed.

The US shouldn't be able to get away with switching to another president that easily. When a space shuttle blows up an investigation is always required to determine what caused the disaster. Well, administrations as bad as this one cause greatly more damage to the US than a shuttle explosion, in terms of deaths, money lost, damage to our form of government, and so on.

Not that the answer is simple or that there even is a definitite answer but I'd like to see some theories, any theories, about why it all happened and if it has a cause(s) that has not gone away yet meaning it could happen again that a new 'worst president in history' is elected.

Both stupid and ignorant (and both) people are allowed to vote. And while most of them voted for Gore, strangely enough, it wasn't enough.

GWB was elected because Gore thought his family history meant that he knew how to run a campaign. Times change. He made so many mistakes in the run-up to November that he frittered away what should have been a lock-down(?) shoo-in (?).

The biggest, IMHO, was running away from Clinton. By the time he figured out that America (other than Rush and his cronies) just plain liked Bill, it was too late.

Look, here's a guy who was sticking a cheroot up some skank's posterior portal in the Oval Office, for Ed's Sake. America - the country that had, a half-generation earlier, run Gary Hart out of the Democratic primaries for having a girl on his lap..... shrugged it off! "Hey, Hey, Hey! That's our Bill! He does like his bimbos, you know!"

Had he run with Bill for longer during the campaign, he would've done far better. Heck, Bill could've gotten him Tennessee, at least!

Gore was in fear of the right wing. Why bother? He wasn't going to get the fundie vote anyway. By cowering at the radiowaves of Limbaugh and friends, he adopted the Kill Bill Kampaign - just pretending Clinton didn't exist. And by inching his liberal credentials further and further to the right, he probably gave Nader the votes from committed liberals.

So, basically, yeah.... he shot himself in the foot... or actually woke up every day asking, "Hmmm? Did I shoot myself in the left foot, yesterday? Okay, then I'll shoot the right one today. BLAM!"

It was Gore's to win, and he should've done it at a jog, but he and his strategists blew it. It should've never gotten down to Florida recounts.

Too many American voters were: venal, self-centered, not well educated, not facing reality, or just plain &^*#$&&#%@)&_+$*_)*$ &^#%(* stupid.
Close. Actually, there weren't enough of them who actually managed to vote for the candidate of their choice.

I spent quite a bit of time analyzing the Florida results and thinking about the various issues. I don't mean to imply any great expertise, but I think there is something to what you are talking about.

Gore chose to go after the counties where he was most likely to make up ground in a recount. The poorest legal decision, IMHO, was when the Florida Supreme court let him go forward with that strategy. If there was a legitimate reason for extending the date for final results it was that the punch card vote machines had caused problems in every county they were used in not just in the counties that Gore wanted recounts in. If the Florida Supreme court had made that decision at least every precinct with punch card machines would have been manually recounted. My non-expert opinion is that the Florida Supreme Court didn't do that because of partisan considerations.

But as a practical matter this is somewhat moot. I think it is a near certainty that more people intended to vote for Gore that Bush in Florida. But that is not the important legal question. The important legal question was which candidate had the most legal votes cast for him. No one will ever know the answer to that question exactly. No amount of recounting could have determined the answer to that question. The results were too close and the condition of the controversial ballots was too ambiguous for absolute determinations. The long hand count carried out by the media after the election ended up with indeterminate results that showed Bush the winner under some criteria for the ballots and Gore the winner with others.

For me, it is interesting to speculate on how the process might have gone if the Supreme court had allowed the hand count to continue. The results would undoubtedly have been ambiguous and both candidates would have claimed victory. It would have been a very tense time for the nation as the situation continued to shake itself out. The recount was very unlikely to settle the issue in a way that could be used to objectively determine a winner. The supreme court would have become involved again and based on perhaps some partisan bias, they probably would have declared Bush the winner anyway.

The US shouldn't be able to get away with doing something I don't like. When my waiter brings me food I don't enjoy, the chef is required to bring me a new dish. Well, administrations I dislike irritate me far more than a medium steak I ordered medium rare. A dry salmon fillet can ruin an evening, but I've been so upset over the current administration it's ruined an entire season of Lost!

Not that the answer is simple or that there evein is a definite answer but I'd like to see some theories, any theories, about why people don't seem to do exactly what I want them to do, and if it has cause(s) that have not gone away yet meaning it could happen again.

Well, no tip for Bush, or that lousy waiter. Don't they know who I am?!?

There is a tyrant just waiting to unleash from within you.

The religious right wing using the political right wing and vice versa to get what they want along with some very skilled marketing to the sheeple and a bit of voter disenfranchisement here, a little vote manipulating there, along with a politically non-neutral Supreme Court at just the right time and you had the perfect storm that gave us the worse President in a long time despite the fact he had slightly less than half the votes.

Then you had 9/11 which gave the Bush-Wave the "terrorism threat" as an even better marketing tool for the sheeple, some continued voter disenfranchisement and a little more vote manipulating and you got Bush's re-election by the skin of his teeth and a spontaneous out pouring of the "Apology to the world" web site and subsequent book by the slim MAJORITY which did NOT vote to re-elect Bush.

Edited to add, you can also throw a bit of Democratic Party incompetence and lack of guts to each of those election mixes as well.

Don't forget that Gore was called a "liar" for things that he never said, for things that the MEDIA lied about. Bush, on the other hand, was treated like an honest person while he lied about just about everything... and Gore was also attacked for daring to point out where Bush's numbers didn't add up. The deck was stacked against Gore from the start, even before the Florida election fraud by the Republicans.

Okay, I sort of understood why he was elected (if he in fact was) the first time. People just found Gore to be utterly repellent and George sounded a little dim, but not scarey. I guess I attribute his second term to the hysterical stupidity of the people combined with the fact that Kerry was also utterly repellent.

Nader is one reason.

But that's only because he tipped a close election.

I personally think there were irregularities in the election that favored Bush as well, but I don't think that explains why it was close enough for these irregularities to tilt the election.

Why did so many people vote for Bush? I wish I knew. I really can't fathom it, especially not the second time.

:hb:

I prefer the term "President for Life", thank-you-very-much. Now away with you, peasant. I'm late for my afternoon of gazing admiringly at my own reflection.

I jost love this term. I always hear it from people who pretend to sympathize with the "masses" who are being unfairly treated by their capitalist overlords, and yet at the same time disdain those same people they want to pretend they side with because those people don't share their view (how dare they! don't they know I'm on their side? why don't they listen to their betters?). Just like the phrase "speaking truth to power," it's a sure sign that the speaker is just parroting a view they've become accustomed to through constant exposure (like a fish gets used to being wet) rather than arrived at through any rigorous analysis.

It's all relative I guess to what one's political leanings are. I think Carter and Clinton were far worse Presidents than Bush.

And I'm sure I won't like anything Hillary does if she gets in there.

Wasn't it already a given if you're a liberal that you weren't going to agree with most things Bush did anyway?

Well there you go an answer to the OP.

Stupidity

What makes you think it is the left wing that are the sheeple? Actually, at the moment, the right wing is the most manipulated by the powers that be. Probably because the right has no reason to question decisions being made by the party they identify with.

But addressing your point, this is absurd. Why should wanting a health care system that works, for example, mean I want charity doled out for everyone? And why because I find the current administration too corrupt for my taste would that mean I prefer socialism to capitalism? And why would the fact that a lack of critical thinking skills exists across a broad spectrum of the population should that matter in terms of the kind of government I'd like to see?

Just who are these "masses" I supposedly identify with?

I happen to think a healthy middle class makes a sustainable society. They consume, making more money for producers. But if the producers continue to allow wealth to concentrate they will be shooting themselves in the foot as their markets dry up.

The current health care system needs an overhaul. Employers don't want to compete with foreign competitors who don't have employee medical expenses. We are paying for the uninsured by inefficiently tacking the costs on to our insurance premiums. And insurance companies bottom lines are not consistent with the consumers' best/most efficient medical care.

Also, some public funded research needs to take place in a number of fields to compensate for the market driven incentives which result in profit over people. Lest you twist that into some socialist nonsense, consider the following example. There is little current market incentive to produce new antibiotics. We desperately need that research but drug producers would have to tie up capital for a lengthy time before earning a good return. So lots of people need to die of drug resistant infections before the market for new antibiotics is big enough to entice private research funds.

And the Iraq war was a disaster, did nothing to stop terrorism was incompetently managed. You don't even have to be a peace promoter to see how badly Bush's decisions on homeland security have been during his term.

Then there is the corporate assault on science the current admin is promoting along with the big oil companies. And there is the religious police and their assault on science trying to shove god beliefs down everyone's throats.

So I may be a liberal, and may see the world differently from you, but you couldn't be more wrong with comments like, "sympathize with the "masses" who are being unfairly treated by their capitalist overlords". And sheeple are the ones who don't think critically and don't see through the bull. They fall equally on both sides of the political isle.

My theory is rigged voting machines.

And the Illuminati.

And the Jews. Can't forget the Jews.

The above derail and incoherent rant is exactly why Bush won in 2000. The liberals became kooky after the Millennium.

Then you had 9/11 which gave the Bush-Wave the "terrorism threat" as an even better marketing tool...

By putting "terrorism threat" into quotes, this liberal is suggesting 9/11 was not a threat to America by, well, terrorists.
