the ever growing vampire community

A video on youtube has made me do a little spelunking and see what I can find on the topic of "real vampires". Apparently the "vampire community" is a thriving, if a bit psychosis and drama filled, group of people who seem to believe that they need to consume life force (claim made by "psychic vampires") and/or blood, most common preference being human.

While some sites are adamant about the vampire community being an adults movement (some tailor their beliefs to reflect this and outright refuse to cater to anyone bellow the age of consent), there is an alarming amount of sites dedicated to teen followers, or with sections targeted at teen followers.

While some sites have a very practical (despite still being outlandish) and arguably less dangerous outlook on the subject, some are very adamant in promoting dangerous behavior, grandiosity and cult activity.

Most "vampires" believe that they posses the strengths and weakness of fictional vampires, most to a lesser degree. While there are some who claim preternatural superpowers, they are generally looked down upon by the community as a whole. Not from disbelief that such things exist, but because they regard these individuals bad reflections of the community as a whole.

Weaknesses that they believe they posses varies, but most often include:
*sensitivity to sunlight (resulting in eye/skin irritation, burning, sun poisoning, *etc)
*nocturnal behavior (despite this only being a modern implication of vampirism-- vampires of lore of yore didn't really have a bed time)
*proclivity towards migraines (a draw back from their supposed stronger 5 senses)
*strong blood lust or need to consume blood (in "sanguine" type vampires)

Strengths they believe they posses are:
*physical prowess surpassing that of a normal human (strength, speed, reflexes, etc)
*psychic prowess (most consider themselves highly psychic)
*better vision, hearing, taste and skin sensitivity
*night vision, being able to see in diminished or non-existent light.

Most "vampires" who consume blood and most "psychic vampires" who consume "life force" generally regard the other type as crazy, disillusioned, merely human or more often, inferior to their type of vampirism.

Cults have sprung up out of this movement, generally adapting theories, rules and guidelines for their sects from role playing games such as those from White Wolf, and books such as The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice. Some of the more popular and talked about cults (refered to as "houses" and "clans" by those in the community) are The Vampire Church, Ordo Strigoi Vii and House Kheperu (an entirely new post in and of itself in terms of their outlandish claims (outlandish in comparison to the rest of the vampire community, if that tells you anything). They are prime examples of the mindset of this community and the people there in.

As of yet, no "vampire" has submitted to scientific testing to prove whether there is an ounce of truth to their claims.

You're one of them aren't you?!?

Sounds like an off-shoot from this semi-recent "Emo" group (who are really just what I would know as "goths").

We really need to return to a policy of compulsory national service. That'll sort them out.

:D

Actually Emos and Goths are completely different sub-cultures. Goths generally try to act dark, mysterious, and into occult stuff. Many are just in it for the attention, and there are the 'perky' Goths who basically just take up the fashion. Emos are a bunch of whiny immature teenagers who write bad poetry about insignificant problems like not having a girlfriend.

These are just stereotypes of course, but they do give a general outline of there differences.

See above link. :D

Maddox put it the best. If there can be legal Vampires, there should be legal Vampire hunters.

I, for one, eagerly await the purchase of my Vampire tag next year.

Sweet.

Wonder if there is a group among the Anne Rice readers who go for the "I am really tall and I snack on yogurt" characters.

The taltos may be the lamest supernatural being in the world. A tall creature with short attention span and a taste for white food. Loves to wear fluffy pajamas and watch TV. Lives for 500 years and has sex only twice.

Strengths they believe they posses are:
*physical prowess surpassing that of a normal human (strength, speed, reflexes, etc)
*psychic prowess (most consider themselves highly psychic)
*better vision, hearing, taste and skin sensitivity
*night vision, being able to see in diminished or non-existent light.
I can think of a few tests that could settle these claims. Lots of hazards in a blacked out room. Then fire tasers at them to see if they can use their psychic powers and superior reflexes to dodge them.

As of yet you have cited zero sources for your claims.

Wow this is a rather generalized and overbearing post.

What is with the tags.

Vampirism is not a standard form of paganism, the O.T.O. would have more blood consumption than most pagans, unless you want to include the 'moon cakes'.

There are at least four groups of vampire types. There are those who play LARPs and RPGs, there are those who have a blood paraphilia, there are those who think the idea of vampires is a cool one and then there are those who are delusional and psychotic.

The most destructive thing marketed to youngsters is modern religion.

Let us see if you are more that just a flyby posting.

As it's the person's first post, I don't think he can post links. The tags were added after the initial post.

Let me provide some sources.

Vampires? They're obviously delusional. If they thought they were Humanoids from the Deep, I could fully embrace their delusion.

Loved the original HFD!!! And got one of my favorite movie patron lines in the restroom after: "Man, I am takin' my piece to the lake with me this summer for sure!!":D:D

But could they survive in cities like the C.H.U.D.s do?

:homersimp

As far as the "vampires" go, with this whole "draining psychic energy" thing... haven't they considered the possibility they're just boring?

Vampires are apparently a subgroup (probably the largest, I'd imagine) of people who call themselves Otherkin. That's people who think they are either: a vampire, a werewolf, a dragon, a fairy, an angel, an elf, or a witch.

Actually witches aren't classified as otherkin but as practicioners of witchcraft. It is of course possible to be a witch and otherkin.

It is btw. very unlikely to find a real nosferatu online on the world wide web. They hardly get on the net because the werewolfes hog all providers.

I'm not so sure. You know Israel won't give a high security clearance to people who play D&D. (http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3052074,00.html)

If you believe a magic man in the clouds can build the world and universe in six days, that's alright. But if you believe that Magic Missile does 1d4+1 damage in a game - well, that's a little suspicious.

I've known a lot of folks who played Vampire the RPG and wanted to take it a bit further. I've known people who looked fairly normal, but obsessed about their RPG character or WOW character. Fantasy prone is as Fantasy prone does.

Of course most of them (as far as I know) didn't drink blood.

And any vampire that has super-powers should take the night-bus down to Randi town and get their million dollars. You could buy a lot of A-positive with that kind of cash!

I've been biting my tongue (;)) as I read this thread last night, but as someone who knows a little bit about the actual history of vampires and the 20th Century goth/subculture differentiation between them, I have to wonder how many self described "vampires" try to emulate Nosferatu. Do any of them try and emulate the balding, dissicated, horn-eared, ugly violator, muderer and ghoul of actual vampire mythology or do they think they're all Frank Langella seducing people? Do any of them not brush their teeth so they develop the foul stench of dead flesh on their breaths? Do any of them impale victims by their rectums over a stake and have dinner while they breathe their last? Do any of them bathe in the blood of their victims or have naked virgins frozen with water in their courtyard?

Vampire sub-culture belongs with Wicca and Scientology in terms of utter rediculousness when it comes to the fact that your parent or grandparent could have had a beer with the person responsible for the advent of those particular lifestyles (and I'm using "lifestyle" loosely). Hello, ****heads, Bella Legosi was a character actor, not an actual vampire.

And if this isn't an irony most skeptics would find delicious... I was listening to Art Bell one night and he had a caller who described himself as a vampire. Art asked him what were the characteristics of vampires. The caller said they were intelligent, sensitive, intuitive, etc. Art asked him something like "just like you?" When the caller responded in the affirmative, Art cut him off and thanked him for the call.

If Art friggin' Bell thinks your claims are a joke, how do you think real skeptics feel about them?

I suppose staking people or freezing virgins in your yard would bring you into conflict with the authorities, and a constant drastic lack of basic hygiene could earn you a commitment.

It is against the intention anyway. It is a little romantic game, nothing more. You will find dragons, elfs, and all sorts of cats but hardly orcs, otyugh or similar abhorrent creatures among otherkin.

As with most funny ideas sometimes they get a little absorbed with it, but most grow out of this spleen.

As for your comment about wiccan... I know a few, and they seem pretty balanced and reasonable people to me. I admit to have met a few fluffy bunnies when wicca was all the rage, but somehow they seem to have found more interresting beliefs to play with as they grew older.

That is not the issue, I am aware of alternate social communities that exist and the OPs statements are over general and outlandish at best and typical scary cult fear mongering garbage.

Before I look at any sites do you want me to look at them? Because I will look at how they cite, reference and obtain their data.

I have had a friend who was part of the OTO temple in Chicago, in some book upon 'Satanism' they were showing pictures of these OTO members as being engaged in 'Satanic Rituals' which they were not. This is the sort of self referencing garbage that usually gets placed in those kinds of sites.

Huh, I thought it was all the zombie lawyers....

Gosh all the wiccans, pagans and thier ilk seem to be about 33% divorced from reality, 33% personality disorder and 33% really cool people.
