Since Galapagos was expensive (and sold out), we thought maybe we'd do another cruise that was less expensive and less formal.

This is JUST an idea.. a new opportunity that came up.

Leaving May 12, 2008 from Long Beach, CA, the Monarch of the Seas will take us to San Diego, Catalina and Ensenada.

The concept is this.. a cruise just for us to hang out together. There'd be no lectures, and Randi is unavailable. I would probably come to organize things like I have on cruises past, but the primary objective would be for us to have a good time together. We'd have a nightly pre-dinner activity, and gather to go ashore together, etc. And we'd all sit together at dinner.

And for those interested, we could possibly do something in LA the weekend before. There are two other skeptics organizations in the area, and possibly we could arrange something with them. But first.. I have to see if there's enough interest.

In order for this to work, we'd need the following:

1) Enough interested people. Say.. 40 or so.

2) People willing to make a donation to the JREF of $100 a person.

3) They'd have to book through us in order to be able to sit together (round robin, which requires special arrangements with the cruise line [same as last two cruises])

4) Willingness to have fun. :)

The ship is similar to the ship that took us through the Bermuda Triangle.

MONARCH OF THE SEAS 5/12 THROUGH 5/16 Monday - Friday
5/12 Long Beach 5:30p
5/13 San Diego 8:00a-5:00p
5/14 Catalina Island 8:00a-5:00p
5/15 Ensenada 8:00a-5:00p
5/16 Long Beach 7:00a
NOTE: Pricing includes all taxes, fuel surcharges and TIPS. That's everything. You'd only pay for drinks and whatever you spent in shops, etc.
These prices are per person:

Inside Cabin $354.75 plus donation

Outside Cabin $384.75 plus donation

Balcony Cabin $794.75 plus donation
If you're interested.. please reply here, or send me a PM. This could be a lot of fun. :) I know it's not a lot of time to plan, and if there isn't enough interest in this, we could try another date, but any other date would almost certainly be more expensive.

I love the idea, it's just that it doesn't give us a lot of time. :(

I guess that would make me a "maybe."

I'll leave my pennies here instead of taking them to Florida with me....

(Count me as interested)

Sounds intriguing, but I don't know if we would be able to swing both this and TAM6...

Count us as doubtful maybes.

Here's an idea to think about over the year: A JREF river cruise up the Mississippi.

That is something I've always wanted to do! I never could find anyone else who did.

We could start in NO, stop in Memphis, St. Louis, the Quad Cities and finally the Twin Cities!

Sign me up!

It has been considered, but the ships are tiny and there's no space for any group activities. And they tend to be pricey.

I seem to recall reading about some "barge" a few years ago that they had built a "cruise ship" on top of it. I seem to recall that it was fairly big. I'll see if I can find the info.

Interested? Unbelievably!

Between an upcoming funeral trip (expected for a long time), a possible surprise bday trip for my dad, and TAM 6, the timing gets tough. I will check with the Master Scheduler. [begins ritual incantations]

I am leaving for France that day.

Let's see. No, I will stick with France. Otherwise, I'd be all over it!

Just so everyone is clear on when this is, we are talking about leaving the day after Mother's day.

That is okay for me work-wise, but the kids are still in school, so maybe I will be able to go but alone. (I could always bring Pigasus) I will have to wait a bit longer to see what will be happening during that time to see if Stirling can be pulled out of school. I really want to bring Caspian, he starts college this week and should have his syllabus soon to let me know if he can go.

Jeff will be okay missing Mother's Day because he will be bringing his mom with him! She is such a sweetie that I might just pretend she is mine for that day. My mom lives with me so everyday is Mother's Day.

Susan just to let you know, that if I go you must. I think it is a law somewhere that there must be at least two Susan's at every event. Even better if there are three.

The law clearly states that there can not be one Susan without two Susans.

Ack - the timing on this is bad because of TAM6 in June. I'd love to do it but alas, I'd say we're unlikely 'maybes'.

I unfortunately can't make this one. but I would be much more inclined to do this trip than say a 1k trip to Alaska or 5k trip to that silly little island.
