A story based on the Three Little Pigs has been turned down from a government agency's annual awards because the subject matter could offend Muslims. The digital book, re-telling the classic fairy tale, was rejected by judges who warned that "the use of pigs raises cultural issues"....
They also warned that the story might "alienate parts of the workforce (building trade)".

I dunno, maybe political correctness has gone mad. Why did nobody worry about this before? What about the poor Jews who must have been scarred by this story?

Huff and Puff, indeed.

Edit: Duh, it has been published, but has been rejected from a government agency award scheme on the above grounds. Perhaps a kind mod could remove the "to publish" bit from the thread title...

Just read the article and the decision seems complete nonsense - apparently it's also been turned because it may offend builders!

"They also warned that the story might "alienate parts of the workforce (building trade)".

The judges criticised the stereotyping in the story of the unfortunate pigs: "Is it true that all builders are cowboys, builders get their work blown down, and builders are like pigs?"
"

You are forgetting that the story appears to be laced with copist, or policism, as well.

All I know is if anyone starts bashing Three Little Bops we're gonna throw down.

Ooh ya cool. Ooh ya cool.

Idiotic bureaucrats with too much time on their hands greatly offends me. Yet somehow, they are unconcerned with this.

AUGH!!!

Pigs exist. What the hell are these idiots thinking?

I don't know a single Muslim who would be offended by the story The Three Little Pigs. Why would they be?

Yea, but talking pigs that build houses?

I don't know a single Muslim who would be offended by the story The Three Little Pigs. Why would they be?

I guess its the idea that pork is being eaten by the wolf. Which is kind of stupid because it is an evil character eating the pork so it would re-enforce the idea about pork eating being a bad thing.

I'm surpized that they weren't worried about offending vedgetarians concerning the meat eating.

I can't figure why they would worry about offending the building trade. They didn't seem to be worried about offending the demolition trade.

All this just re-enforces my belief that people are just generally stupid.

The day we all start to fear offending each other is the day we should be obliterated by an asteroid.
What kind of fearful, bland, anal rententive, denialist species would we be to deserve existance?

We need to be offended once in a while to reality check ourselves.

I don't know but what about the possibility of offending builders which is the other given reason!

Now granted I've known some builders that to call them pigs would be to offend pigs...

What about manufacturers of straw and wood based building materials! How dare this author suggest that they are inferior to brick based building materials!

But judges at this year's Bett Award said that they had "concerns about the Asian community and the use of pigs raises cultural issues".

The Three Little Cowboy Builders has already been a prize winner at the recent Education Resource Award - but its Newcastle-based publishers, Shoo-fly were turned down by the Bett Award panel, run the government's technology agency.

The feedback from the judges explaining why they had rejected the CD-Rom highlighted that they "could not recommend this product to the Muslim community".

They also warned that the story might "alienate parts of the workforce (building trade)".

The judges criticised the stereotyping in the story of the unfortunate pigs: "Is it true that all builders are cowboys, builders get their work blown down, and builders are like pigs?"

So out of all the other things, the headline is about Muslims?

ETA: I would ban the book for the horrible cliches.

Won't someone please think about the wolves??!!

There is a petition from Rome to ban The Wolf and the Seven Little Kids on the grounds that wolves are historically excellent with kids and it's thus a defamatory story.

Others argue that while a lone single parent wolf could successfully cope with perhaps as many as two kids (and they note that kids so raised often demonstrate violent tendencies later), showing how she failed to manage septuplets would indicate to young readers that a typical nuclear family is the best lifestyle choice.

No gay wolves were available for comment, which is probably just as well.

Don't worry, they can always sell to the US where we insist on using inferior building products for our homes.

BTW, I just clicked on this thread because I found it amusing that both [Ed] and "too offensive" were in the title. :)

Just (literally) listened to an interview with the CR-ROM's author and your comment is on the mark. The reason the author says she was told it wasn't suitable was about how it portrayed builders (by the way her description of the CDROM makes it sound so "right on" ...) and the comment about Muslims was a comment that it would not be suitable for recommending to some sections of UK culture...

But what makes a "better" news headline..... :(

And there are more vegetarians in the UK than there are Muslims, twice as many in fact. You make an excellent point.

That the pigs in the story wear clothes and build houses is precisely why this should not (and probably isn't) a problem to the Muslim community.

But as for offending builders...unless the book is going to printed in Polish I doubt that's an issue...:D

*ducks and runs away very quickly*

#i beleive the wolf's name in the original text was Musharrif. Someone asked has politcal correctness gone mad, a great indicator of this is the liberal left courting islamic fundamentalists.
