And? - It is only a 4 year old article - and we all know Richard was having a hissy fit because Bush thought he was irrelivent. We all know he lied when he distorted Minata's testimony in his book, got caught out for that, among other things - so why should we care

Yes, I too would like to see where PNAC stated that in their agenda.

I do however see Iraq on the White House agenda long before Bush was even in office. Mighta had something to do with everyone ELSE also thinking Saddam had WMD and his violations of the UN resolutions, etc.

He seems to have mis-spoken here. Did he mean "an inconceivably vast conspiracy within the US Government, led by the PNAC and encompassing all the law enforcement agencies, emergency services and government-sponsored scientific organisations" when he said "Osama bin Laden"? It's an easy mistake to make.

OK. PNAC is my assumption--reading between the lines. The real issue is Rumsfeld and Bush wanting to retaliate against Iraq immediately instead of focusing on known terrorist threats.

Clarke says that as early as the day after the attacks, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld was pushing for retaliatory strikes on Iraq, even though al Qaeda was based in Afghanistan.

Clarke relates, "I began saying, 'We have to deal with bin Laden; we have to deal with al Qaeda.' Paul Wolfowitz, the Deputy Secretary of Defense, said, 'No, no, no. We don't have to deal with al Qaeda. Why are we talking about that little guy? We have to talk about Iraqi terrorism against the United States.'

"And I said, 'Paul, there hasn't been any Iraqi terrorism against the United States in eight years!' And I turned to the deputy director of the CIA and said, 'Isn't that right?' And he said, 'Yeah, that's right. There is no Iraqi terrorism against the United States."

I guess I jumped to the conclusion regarding the PNAC agenda because Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz were PNACers. Go figure.
