A suggestion has been made that we play Werewolf at TAM 5.5 and I think it would be great fun for all, gamers or not. No cards, dice or board necessary, just bodies sitting in a circle trying to figure out who among them are the werewolves before the village is killed. It involves arguing, persuasion, and lynching purported werewolves. It is an ideal game for skeptics.

Here is a link for more info, for those who are not familiar with the game: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafia_(game)

So, shall we find the howlers among us? Or be eaten ;)

Look, I'll tell you up front: I am a werewolf, and beer makes me immortal. Be afraid.

It's a cool game. Both Werewolf, and Psychiatrist are like that. Count me in.
I think I first played it with deck of cards to help randomize the roles of each character.

Dude, they were playing this all over Dragon*Con, in several lobbies, a bunch of times.

I think it could become a very viral meme: Easy to play, easy to pick up new players, psycholgically instensive for the players, and a potential laugh riot for the "informed" non-playing bystanders.

And it might demonstrate psychological theories on witchcraft-accusation, to boot.

I could play this, or drink beer and chase girls. I think I'll choose the latter.

Some rules that myself and Kochanski collaborated upon.

These are a variation of a very basic set of Werewolf rules which members of the Denver Skeptics Meetup played at a session in 2007.

Feedback is welcome!

OK, serious question. You guys are really going to do this instead of going out and having dinner and some beers?

While I'm a big fan of the drinking there's a good reason why a game like Werewolf has replaced Happy Hour as an ideal way to get to know fellow attendees at tech conferences as well as the aforementioned Dragon*Con.

Simply put, it's an icebreaker, and an insanely fun one at that. It tears down those social barriers that always seem to be present at these conferences by providing attendees a way to interact on a level that is deeper, more intense and more interesting than can be achieved by shop talk over beers in a noisy bar.

Or as TAM's own Hal Bidlack said of his experience with the game:
"You get to be clever, sneaky, witty, funny, and from time to time get to bite people in the neck."

I cheat at these types of games.

Really, not as badly as I cheat at mini golf.

Found a good intro to the game that covers the basic rules and mechanics and strategies...

I'll take your word for it. But if you need me, I'll be in the pub. Talking to girls. :)

And what makes you think you won't find girls playing this game ;) You could be a brave protector of the village keeping all the village lasses safe from the werewolves. You could comfort them as their friends and family are killed. There are so many possibilities you are missing out on :p
