An employee of mine (who I will call "Vinton") is a truther and lurks on this forum. "Vinton" sent me an e-mail giving an explanation why William Rodriguez's has changed his story so many times. I have tried to get "Vinton" to post his claim on this forum but he refuses therefore I am posting the relevant part of the e-mail because I can see the explanation being spread among and used by truthers to justify William Rodriguez's story changes.

So here it is:

Originally in an e-mail written by "Vinton" to Coffee:
I've noticed the debunkers on JREF have called William Rodriguez a liar. This is wrong. William Rodriguez has not lied about his accounts on 9/11. His changing story is a matter of false memories. False memories are a common psychological event that happens to most people. The work of Professor Elizabeth Loftus proves this to be true.

Who is Elizabeth Loftus?

Elizabeth Loftus ,a pioneer in the field of cognitive research who was named one of the top psychologists by the Review of General Psychology, had conducted numerous studies on human memory. What she found was that memories can become distorted over time and that false memories can easily be implanted through suggestions, dreams, or even a vivid overactive imagination. In one experiment she set out to convince participants that they had gotten lost in the mall as children. By the end of the experiment, nearly all the participants had created false memories of this fictional event. Many even described the mall and anxiety of being separated from their parents in great detail this proves that memory is extremely malleable. (here is a link to articles written by the good professor.)

This applies to William Rodriguez. He hasn't lied. His memory of the events have changed and the changes in memory can be a result of numerous things as pointed out in the case work of Elizabeth Loftus. To call him a liar is just wrong. Tell that to the debunkers at JREF!
So the defense is William Rodriguez isn't a liar he just fails at memory. Wow. Too bad evidence does not support his new memories.

I suspect that Slippery Willie will wonder how this "defense" is supposed to put any cash in his pocket.

Whether deliberate falsification or innocent confabulation (my guess is it's somewhere in between), the Truther's case rests on clay feet.

So when it comes down to it, Vinton basically believes that W.R. is a completely unreliable witness to anything that happened at the WTC.

Yep. In 2005 he remembered that there were bombs in the north tower, something he had previously forgotten to tell his interviewers, NIST, and his lawyer in his grand conspiracy lawsuit. Easy thing to forget, those bombs.

He keeps forgetting that he wasn't the last survivor of the north tower.

He keeps forgetting that he didn't save hundreds of lives.

He forgot that his lawsuit was thrown out of court.

He forgot that most 9/11 Commission interviews weren't public or included in the report.

He forgot that he's been freely telling his story to the media.

He forgot that NIST did want to hear his story, then he forgot to tell them about the explosives.

He forgot to stop associating with hate-mongers.

He forgot that the 9/11 Commission did interview first responders.

He forgot that there were huge fires in WTC 7, confirmed by people he was with on 9/11.

He forgot that he didn't lose his job because of 9/11 but because complained about ABM, his employer.

He forgot to check the facts about the timing of his story, when flight 175 hit, the occupancy of the 34th floor, and the plausibility of 21 floors collapsing and stopping right above him, which no one else in the world noticed.

He forgot that steel framed buildings can and do collapse due to fire.

He forgot that Bush never said, "We don't need to investigate."

He forgot that it wasn't only FEMA that investigated the collapses.

He forgot that the official version doesn't say that jet fuel melted the tower columns.

He forgot to read the NIST report or the NIST FAQ.

He forgot to find evidence that steel was illegally removed from the site in order to hide it from inspection.

He forgot that he keeps saying his story hasn't changed, yet he also says that he initially believed the official explanation of the fireballs and collapses.

He forgot not to make accusations without evidence.

He forgot not to travel with and speak with and receive aid from anti-Semites.

He forgot not to speak at a conference run by notorious Holocaust deniers.

He forgot to interview Arturo Griffith, as he said he would.

He forgot that I wrote a detailed paper explaining these things to him.

He forgot to answer our questions when they got tough.

Forgetful guy, that William Rodriguez.

That should be Vinton's conclusion but it's not. Vinton believes W.R. as long as W.R. reinforces his 9/11 beliefs. Vinton cherry picks.

It's not forgetting. It's malleable memory. :)

I propose an experiment.

Invent a story out of wholecloth that gives you cause to fire Vinton, and when he objects to being fired, tell him that you wholeheartedly believe every word of your story.

Then, observe whether he excuses you for firing him on the basis that it was due to "malleable memory" on your part or whether he fights you tooth and nail for firing him without cause.

;)

Interesting idea. ;) Too bad it wouldn't be a surprise to him since he lurks this forum and has probably read this. :D

That's really only valid for a limited period.

When the sufferer's previous memories are pointed out to them, and the evidence supplied that shows any memories to be incorrect, then they should accept that. You know - rather than continue to use their memories for personal gain.
