What is good about religion?

"If you believe as I do that the purpose of religion is to suck all the pleasure out of life..." Three seconds spent listening to an idiot that I won't get back; any reason I should devote any more of my time to it?

Nope.

It is not for you.

I'm interested in those who can tell me if he missed any thing good about religion.

One good thing about Christianity is that once a week a lot of christians clear the streets, shut up and do something in some building :)

He got that wrong, then. That's specifically Christianity's purpose, not religion in general.

I've always thought religion gave some people inspiration to do some nice art or stories. That's about it.

The fact that for millennia religious institutions had all the money and influence pay for artists and to attract them had nothing to do with that, I'm sure.

Michelangelo really did want to paint those frescos.

I don't want to be mean, but its pretty funny to see this post coming from someone who's avatar title is "Critical Thinker."

"I don't want to be mean, but I'm going to launch into an unprovoked insult."

All that because I'm not interested in some atheists Ed Anger routine?

Yes, rocketdodger, all religions are completely lacking in ethics. You've found them out. Well done.

I was just making the point that the automated title switcher thingy they use can have humorous results sometimes. Its not an insult, unless you actually consider yourself a critical thinker. But then, if you really were, you would have watched more than the first 5 seconds.

Religion can help facilitate an individual's search of meaning, purpose, and ethics.

Perhaps

But so what? (in light of Religion does hinder many an individual's searching for meaning, purpose, and ethics being an equally, if not more, valid statement)

Was my first judgment wrong? Tell me, had I watched more than five seconds, would I have found a serious and thoughtful discussion about the virtues of religion? If you tell me that's what it is, I'll trust your word and watch it.

I try to be a critical thinker about important subjects. About Youtube videos? Not quite such a priority with me, especially if the person making the video pisses me off within three seconds.

Humor, including sarcastic humor you do not find humorous, is as valid a medium as any other. Critical thinkers understand that a point made, whether in a humorous rant or a peer reviewed journal, is still a point, and the only important quality in points is whether they are valid or not.

It seems like you are saying that one can safely ignore any communication they find distasteful. I don't think that is a very smart policy.
