US scientists: Dr Crippen was innocent

A team of American scientists have found, by comparing DNA from the body to that from Mrs Crippen's living relatives, that the body in Dr. Crippen's cellar wasn't that of his wife. So he was innocent after all!

Oh, hang on, maybe not:
Researchers found other evidence to suggest the body could only have made its way to Crippen's house when he and his wife were living there.

One of Dr Trestrail's hypotheses is that Crippen was performing illegal abortions and that the body could have resulted from a botched procedure.

Q: Could the possibility that Mrs. Crippen's relatives DNA link could be corrupted by less than honest "Yes! You're the father"?

If the link is from a brother, for example, he may not actually have any offspring and the DNA link is to her brother's, wife's milkman and not a Mrs. Crippen relative.

Does that make sense?

I read somewhere that a surprisingly large number of fathers are not raising their own children and without their knowledge. 1910 is quite a few potential generations away. Potentially 6 or 7 if they start young.

According to this report of the story, they were using mitochondrial DNA, which comes exclusively from the mother, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Nah. If the homeopath killed her accidentally, it was only because he made the mistake of using one of those dangerous allopathic treatments rather than a harmless homeopathic treatment. :)

He might not have been up to date with the latest homoeopathic research, and known about the law of similars, but not the later law of infinitesimals, which Hahnemann introduced when he discovered that crude doses of substances which caused symptoms, er, caused symptoms. After all, we're talking about events that took place only about a century after the publication of the Organon; these days, homoeopaths are still unaware of scientific and medical developments of over 150 years ago.

Anyway, remember what sort of things those "harmless homeopathic treatments" are claimed (by homoeopaths) to cause:

Thanks for that. A useful bit of information I didn't know.

It still wouldn't make any difference if the ancestral line was broken as in my example. The milkman DNA would produce a mis-match.

They need to be certain that they had a legitimate ancestral link.

Brother's wife (No direct DNA match) + Wife's milkman lover (No direct DNA match) = Child (No direct DNA match).

Have they?

Okay... So a homeopath didn't kill one perticular person. Great. Well that just about proves he was an honest and completely up-and-up doctor.

In a related story: Sylvia Browne's honor has been restored after it was proven she had nothing to do with the assassination of Aberham Lincoln. And Kevin Trudeau is now right about "natural cures" because it's been proven he was not Jack the Ripper.

Also, Richard Hoagland's "Face on Mars" receives renewed attention after it's revealed that he was not the second gunman on the grassy knoll.

If they were using mitochondrial DNA, even a true descendant of her brother wouldn't give a match. In other words, if the link was as you suggest but the child was really her brother's, they couldn't get a positive result, so it can't have been like that. (The article doesn't work for me now).

In order for them to get a match it would have to be something like sister's daughter's daughter's daughter's child. Would maternal grandmother's daughter's daughter's... daughter's child work? The father in each case would be irrelevant.

Or have I misunderstood your point/the argument?

You're saying the Face on Mars was the FIRST gunman?
So Rubey wasn't a homoeopath?

I just don't know what to believe, any more.
