Watch Mitt Romney refuse to answer a person in a wheelchair when asked if he would arrest him for using medical marijuana:

This was a toss up between politics and science/medicine, so if mods feel it should be moved I have no problem.

Are you familiar with the names of these two tactic? I suppose Mitt was being faced with an inconvenient truth: regardless of which side of the fence you stand on, the medical marijuana matter has a human face.

Sorry, I didn't follow the question. Am I familiar with the tactics they used or am I familiar with who they are?

I will make no secret that I dislike Mitt Romney, but if he truly believes that medical marijuana should be an arrestable offense, he should be willing to say so. If not, he would be better served saying so. He could have said lots of things there that don't make him look too bad, turning his back did look bad.

I think drugs should be legal and come with promotions like Marlboro miles or camel cash.

However, this was an obvious setup. They wheel out a guy who starts by stating that he has had this disease his entire life but that medical marijuana will keep him alive now? He delivers a very rehearsed pitched and Romney gets owned by it. Also, the person taping seems to be part of the setup? They guy asking questions?

I'd like to see all candidates get these types of setups honestly though. However, we need to remember they are setups. They show us the candidates taking hard questions under pressure that may even be slightly dishonest.

That the guy may have been an actor using props to emphasize the issue is irrelevant.

Setup or not, it was a legitimate question that should have been answered.

Setup or not, it was a legitimate question that should have been answered.

The question was "would you arrest me and my doctors"?

Now technically, Romney would not arrest him or his doctors. So the answer is "No". However, that would be interpreted as supporting medical marijuana.

However, a "yes" answer would have been incorrect in any meaning.

Romney answered "I don't support medical marijuana".

Obvious setup, but there isn't anything wrong with that. If you have a policy that would negatively impact a segment of the population, you should be willing to face that group of people.

Truthfully, I don't think I could do it, but then I'm not running for office.

Very true. But the context of the question was "Does he deserve to be arrested for possessing pot."

The distasteful part of Mit's answer was that it attempted to distance himself from the very personal issue. He was given a very specific example (I do not know how valid it was) claiming that medical Pot was prescribed. He challenged Mit's claim that alternatives eliminate the need for pot(This claim isn't valid*). Mit didn't have an answer, and refused to address or explain himself on why he was against medical marijuana?

*there is now a oral spray (under tounge) that can deliver THC for long durations. It is currently approved in Canada and it seems to have pretty good compliance.

yup
interestingly, it's pretty much a solution of THC in ethanol.
You spray it on your tounge, the ethanol extracts out and leaves a oily film of pure THC. Since THC isn't soluable in water, it remains under your tounge to be slowly absorbed by the tissue there.

ETA: Seems that there are possible negative local side effects as a resutl of the spray, primarily chemical burns in the oral mucosa.

Of course, marijuana taken in smoke form has adverse affects too, such as cottonmouth and the munchies.

Then there's the candidate who is campaigning FOR medical marijuana. So a guy corners him in a wheel chair and says, "Someone stoned on weed ran a red light and hit me and I'll never walk again. His lawyer says he was taking it for his migraine headaches. So do you plan to put more guys like me in wheelchairs?

It sounds easier to light up a joint.

I don't like Romney (as a politician, he seems like a perfectly nice guy) but if I were him, regardless of his position, I would have just said something like: "I hear what your saying, I'll look further into it with cases like yours and if it checks out I'll change my position".

He could've never done anything he said but he could have avoided any poor publicity. However he IS a conservative so changing position is somehow illegal to them.

This works great, then you go against cellphones(Ban them NOW, they cause so many accidents), eating, changing the radio and so on.

Do you think it easier to chew tabacco or smoke it?

It's one of those preference things. I think it's cool that we have alternatives. Also, from a drug delivery perspective, the oral spray can delivery sustained amounts for a longer time, which is great from a therapeutic perspective.

I was unaware marijuana was outlawed because of an inordinate number of automobile accidents. I thought it was an unholy alliance of 1950s political hunger fraudulently lying about the reefer madness combined with Hearst newspapers, who had just bought a gigantic forest for the purpose of producing cheap paper, wanting to outlaw hemp so the new invention of cheaper hemp paper wouldn't cause their massive wood production invenstment to be lost.

"Driving while impaired is illegal, regardless of whether drug is legal or not. I strongly support laws against driving while under the influence, whether that is alcohol, prescription drugs, or a cellphone. We need people to drive safely."

The absurdity of having to have a national debate over whether or not the possession and use of a plant should be legal or not is overwhelming from my perspective. Not to mention that the casual acceptance of the notion that the government has any business telling people how they should treat their bodies is chilling. We live in a world inhabited by Carrie Nations and blue nosed busybodies.

He's a Mormon. God says it's bad.
