Today's front page of the UK's widely respected source of journalistic tabloid excellence that goes under the banner The Daily Star leads with the story that the McCann parents have approached "psychic barber" Gordon Smith to help with the search for Madeleine.

The Daily Star

Apparently Smith "could" be able to solve this unfortunate case within days. Or then again "it's a possibility that nothing might happen". I guess we shouldn't be holding our breath there then.

Still, since God has ignored the prayers of His Popeness and seems unwilling to step up and help then this is clearly the next, best option.

Genuine parental desperation, a cynical attempt to deflect and maintain media profile or maybe even newspaper fiction?

The barrel bottom has been well and truly scraped.

Actually, it is to bad about OJ and his current legal problems....otherwise, he could have taken a break from looking for the real killer of Nicole & Ron and helped the McCanns in their search for the real "kidnappers".

Wonder if any of them have any mirrors handy?

To be fair, it does look like all the evidence against the McCanns is circumstantial. It's rare, but sometimes the dingos really do take the baby.

I suspect the psychic story is newspaper BS. I find it unlikely that two medical professionals who are devout Catholics would turn to a psychic.

I don't want to start a quagmire of McCann posts, but I have interest in true crime and have followed this case. There is so much contradiction by them that it's hard to see what is truth.

Amyway Gordon Smith.I think he has been approached by a family friend, but I doubt the McCanns themselves will consult him. Too ridiculous for words.
When he doesn't find her, then what?

Oh, I'm not saying they didn't do it. That is the most likely scenario. But I am saying based on the evidence released to the press, there's not enough for me to feel comfortable with certainty. I think that there isn't enough evidence in either direction for anyone to make a judgment call.

The quote by the psychic is interesting, it's very weasely. No surprise there then.

True...though I think that applies to any court trial, especially murder. I sat as a juror in a murder trial once, a completely fascinating process. In the end…you have defense and prosecution “facts” and interpretations…it can be very interesting.

BTW – We found him guilty of 1st degree murder and felony break-in, he is currently serving a 30 year sentence. The death penalty was not an option.

I agree the case seems far from iron clad though does seem the most likely scenario.

Shhh... there may be tabloid journo's lurking. With the level of unfounded speculation of this case

"Dingos Took Maddie!"

may well become next Tuesday's Daily Star cover story.

So given that the two realistic options for psychics are:

1.) dispicable, greedy, fraudulent lowlifes. (feel free to add any derogatory term in here)

or

2.) deluded schizophrenic

An act like this must place Gordon Smith in the second category?
Since someone in the position of number 1, would realise they have almost no chance of solving the case.
Or can he just cover by a tried and true excuse, and mitigate negative publicity to the point where the overall publicity was worth it?

I heard the McCanns' spokesman on the radio this am. He categorically denied they had approached a psychic. He said that there had been over a thousand offers of "help" in the last 3 months - unsolicited approaches by psychics.
The McCanns remained open to help from any source, he said, but he seemed to dismiss this latest media flurry as nonsense. He could not exclude the possibility that someone linked with the family may have approached a psychic for help tho.

No arguements with no. 1 from me!

Thing is, he's already quite openly covered his parasitic ass with the "nothing might happen" line. He wins either way.

In future he can now claim to have "helped" in such a seriously high profile case, regardless of how little help he'll actually turn out to be.

Interesting.

The Star article states "Madeleine McCann’s parents have admitted they plan to use a psychic in their quest to find their daughter".

A Great British tabloid newspaper making stuff up? Surely not.

I wonder if the psychic will claim that the little girl was sold into slavery in Japan?

I suppose they'll try dousing next...oh wait...haven't they tried that already?

I found this page about the McCann's use of a psychic, and I like this quote:
I have recently wrote about Sharon Neill, a psychic medium, also from the UK, who helps the police in lost people cases. It will be interesting to see how this story will progress from here and if she will be close to the truth or be like Sylvia Browne in her famous false prediction in the Shawn Hornbeck case.

Smith has made a statement saying no-one has approached him to help the McCanns.

I remember on a TV show a few years ago about UK mediums, even Gordon Smith's son(his manager I think) doubted his abilities.
Thats Colin Fry,Gordon Smith,BriansDreams,Dennis McKenzie,Diane Lazarus and Amanda Jane Hart that have so far "helped" or being lined up to help. Still no further proof of their abilities.
On so many forums(ones which ban me when I start to dispute)there are people claiming proof of psychics!!
Its always skeptics that get banned. Odd that! :)

Gordon Smith sounds like the most disreputable British Barber since Sweeney Todd.

He's the Daily Record's (not the most reputable paper) resident psychic twunt. This is their take on the "story".

A source close to the family confirmed an approach had been made to Gordon.

The insider said: "The medium had a conversation with a family member who is close to Kate and Gerry but not in their blood line."

From this via hack journo chinese whispers we get "Madeleine McCann’s parents have admitted they plan to use a psychic in their quest to find their daughter". Something from nothing. Again.

And as if this wasnt enough factless grief porn for the emotionally stunted to feast upon, we have Lady Bloody Di rising from her coffin once again.

Day Two of Gordon gate!

In Daily Star the blurb reads "The man dubbed The Psychic barber claims ot have extraordinary powers which have defied scientific testing"

Presumably because he hasn't been scientifically tested....

It cites four cases where he has had results. Not very convincing ones!
I've emailed a colleague who writes for Daily Star seeing if he can mention Randi challenge.
