July 2007 Stundie Nominations

Not much to report on this month, except that I am very glad that I am on uni break at the moment - the sorting for the June finals looks to be mad, so it is nice to have some time off to organise them (and some isolation - it seems that everyone has gone back to whence they came from for the winter, while I have chosen to hibernate in a city far more interesting than my home town).

There is a new rule this month that I have previously mentioned, and comments are welcome on it - this is, after all a community effort, and it is possible that this rule will not be as welcome as others have been. The rule relates to nominations coming from within the JREF forums, and might seem to be a bit limiting at first. However I am including it in an effort to better comply with this forum's civility rules. We aren't breaching them, but we do walk a fine line that we must be careful not to cross. This rule is so important to me, in fact, that I am making it rule number one, so no excuses that you didn't see it!

Aside from that there are two rule clarifications: The first relates to audio nominations, which are to be dealt with in the exact same way as video nominations; the second relates to typos, which are to be dealt with in the same way as spelling mistakes, unless the irony is especially juicy (I prefer irony rare and topped with a creamy justice sauce, myself).

And so here they are, the rules of Teh 28th Annual Stundie Awards:

  1. Nominations from the JREF forums are allowing, but will not be as highly regarded as nominations from other sources, be they on or off the interwebs. The finalists will contain a maximum of 25% nominations from the JREF forums; 75-100% must be from nominations external to the JREF forums.
  2. Nominations should always be accompanied by a link or a screenshot, to confirm that the quote exists and has not been taken out of context. (It would be wise to always have a backup screenshot, as truth movement forums are well known for deleting entire threads.)
  3. For a nomination to be eligible, it must have a real and obvious link to conspiracy theories, but not exclusively 9/11 conspiracy theories.
  4. Stundie nominations should 'stand alone'. Do not over-embellish introductions, but do provide comments. Do not use any blatant ad hominem attacks.
  5. Please post the nomination under the real screenname of the nominee, and not under a slightly altered name (e.g. Killclown, Roxpup, Do-over).
  6. The best Stundie nominations are short and sweet. As a guideline, no more than 6 lines should be included from the post. If you are giving context, highlight the actual nomination.
  7. Entire videos or audio clips are not eligible for nomination. Specific statements or claims from videos or audio clips are eligible for nomination.
  8. No long rants. Cut them down to the funniest bit.
  9. No speeling mistikes or tie-pose. Everybody makes a mistake once in a while!

If you have any questions regarding the eligibility of a nominations (or potential nomination), don't worry, just ask. No one is going to bite your head off unless you ask them to.

I don't understand what the new rule has to do with the civility of this forum. We can nominate the same kinds of posts as before, but those nominations will be discounted? What's the purpose of this double standard? IMO, posts from this forum should be judged the same as posts from elsewhere, or shouldn't be eligible at all.

It's an attempt to encourage more nominations from outside of the forum, something Lisa suggested I do to ensure that the Stundies stay on the right side of this forum's civility rules. Nominations will still be accepted - I don't see any reason not to accept them provided they abide by the rules, but unless there is some sort of incentive I doubt a guideline will change anything. Also, I feel that the Stundie Finals are what draw the ire of people more often than the nomination thread, so limiting the number that make it through to the finals should keep us safe.

Of course, the Stundies don't belong to me, so I'm willing to change the rule if enough people feel strongly about it and replace it with a guideline - but people will have to speak up.

Until then, blame Lisa. :cool:
 
Thanks for the explanation, Moby. I still don't understand how the new rule would make the Stundies more "civil," and since nominations from someone like me who doesn't often read other forums will be at a disadvantage, I'll be opting out. I blame Lisa. :D

Aw, don't opt out just because of that! Believe me, I pretty much keep to the JREF forums as well, but if I see something Stundie-worthy, I'll nominate it. Also, it isn' so much as making the Stundies more "civil" as it is about making sure everything is in line with the civility rules on this forum.

Well, I'd bet be off to bed. Tis 3.50am and Moby needs his sleep.

I actually happen to agree with Stundie on this one. Geography is a science sort of like how bowling is a sport. It's factually true, but it's still lame compared to everything else in the category.

It really depends on the branch of geography... meteorology studies, for instance, falls under the geography department of the universities around here. Geography can also encoporate large aspects of physics (Hazards research, avalanches for instance; or land survey, for those switchbacks you drive up to your favorite mountain) or biology/chemistry (environmental geography, as in the study of hazards to the environment). Most geography courses around here require a background in science, and it is used.

And here I was thinking geography was just knowing the location and name of stuff on a map.

Wow. I mean this guy's cajones! Yes here's him calling the people who ran away, after seeing a burning car driven into a building two days after two car bombs are discovered, cowards. What JTGOB would have nonchlantly wandering over and lit a cigarette off the flaming car? In a show of bravado, and mocking the scottish smoking ban!
