Price Not Right for Rosie

ROSIE: Jane, what do you bid on the dinette set?

JANE: $910, Rosie.

ROSIE: The bid is $910. Bill?

BILL: What was the highest bid, Rosie?

ROSIE: $910.

BILL: $911.

ROSIE: And the actual price of the dinette set is... $973! Bill, come on down and play a pricing game!

JANE: $911 was an inside job.
 
It's too bad. It would have been fun to watch her say, "Can you believe they charge [insert MSRP here] for that piece of crap?" after every single pricing game.

Soon, no more sponsors, and we'd finally be rid of the show!

Heck, they can hire me. I'll do it. "And the manufactuer's retail price is... 1,273 dollars! But you can get a much-better-quality used one for 99 bucks on e-Bay!"

I'll even throw in useful tidbits like "By the way, that trip you just won is non-transferrable, you won't be able to schedule it without losing your job, and whether you go on it or not, you now owe $4,000 taxes on it, due immediately." While the cameras are still running, instead of afterward.

(Actually, I think current laws allow you to not accept the prize in such cases. But how many people know that?)

I think you can pretty much take the cash value of anything. Which is probably easier on the show, too; some of the outlandish prizes they give away would be difficult/expensive to deliver. Do you have any idea how much wrought iron furniture weighs?
 
My friend works for a talent agency, and they've been all over The Price is Right people to get their clients on the list of Host prospects.

The producers laughed hysyterically when they asked about Rosie. Apparently, there was never any truth to that rumor.
 
Well, let's see... The Price is Right has a plum job opening, and they're getting a flood of random nobodies who want to be TV stars... how could they pick a new host... well, The Price is Right show has a built-in winnowing process that's largely based on people stabbing each other in the back, for the right to play a bunch of silly, no-skill-necessary games that whittle a huge pack down to one winner in an hour's time... hmm, what could they do... it's right on the tip of my tongue... it's a CBS show, that strikes me as relevant somehow...

It figures. The one time in network television history where they SHOULD do a reality show, and they don't. Stay tuned for Armed & Famous.

I haven't seen the Price is Right in years, but I distinctly remember at one point there was a "term of Conditions" discliamer that stated there was a minimum time period before you were allowed to sell any prizes won. That was back in the 80's though.

I don't know, but I'd be very surprised if that were true. I think most of those prizes are donated by the manufacturer in return for the publicity (advertising). If the wrought iron furnature has a retail value of $3000 and the manufacturing cost is $1000, I doubt the manufacturer is going to buy it back from the winner for $3000.

No matter who It's sold or delivered it, it has to be delivered to somewhere. You don't make a profit by making anything (including wrought Iron furniture) and then keeping it next door in a warehouse forever.

I don't see how it would be easier on the show even if delivery is even their responsibility- they (whoever) either delivers it to the winner or they deliver it back to the manufacturer or wholesaler.

I remember reading somewhere that Rosie's charitable foundation had relatively low overhead and administrative costs. Apparently a lot of these celebrity foundations exist as a way to funnel income and cover expenses of family members; there was a report that Alec Baldwin's foundation bought his mom an SUV, for example, and that this shows up in the high overhead and administrative costs. So Rosie's charity seems legit.
