Will Tax Protestor Standoff Lead To Another Ruby Ridge?

Since Ruby Ridge and Waco, how should law enforcement treat criminals with weapons who refuse to surrender?

The Browns were convicted in January of multiple federal felonies related to their refusal to pay income taxes for nearly 10 years. The Browns, who contend that no laws require them to pay taxes, dismiss the court's finding as a "fiction," and describe the judge, Steven McAuliffe, as a "criminal." Both Browns were sentenced to prison sentences of more than five years, but they have resisted capture, remaining holed up in their hilltop home for several months.

"I would say to the marshal, and all of those people responsible for any unlawful action, to be very apprehensive and very nervous about conducting any criminal activity against our land or ourselves," Brown said. "We are a very reciprocal people. You do us good, we do you good. You do us bad, we're gonna do you bad. It's that simple."

Cut them off from everything - including food and water supply - and wait - unless a shot is fired from the "fortress". Then they should reduce it to rubble.

Their utilities have already been shut off but this couple are operating on solar energy, have a well for water and a large storage of food. Several fringe groups are supplying them with whatever else they need.

As a progressive thinking person, I support a government that gives its citizens what they desire. The Browns want to be martyrs. Give it to them.

How?

The wife is a successful dentist, they owe tax on $1.3 million of income over five years. Read the link in the OP and check out the photo of their home. These folks ain't poor.

Since law enforcement hasn't made a move against they (yet) visitors are free to come and go and bring them cell phones and whatever else they need.

At Waco, there is disagreement as to who fired the first shot. What is clear, however, is that the FBI engaged in a blatant cover-up, so their claims that they were not the first to fire are rather suspect.

At Ruby Ridge, it is, as far as I know, undisputed that the Feds were the first to fire shots. According what I have read, the arrest warrant was based on trumped-up charges, making the Feds the ones who were criminals. Furthermore, they murdered two people during the standoff.

So it seems to me that there are two obvious things that the FBI should do: make sure that the people they're arresting actually are criminals, and not shoot at people who are already suspicious of you.

This couple was convicted of multiple federal felonies related to their refusal to pay income taxes for nearly 10 years. They believe that there are no laws requiring them to pay income tax, therefore they are guilty of no crimes. They have guns and refuse to be taken into custody.

What's to be done?

Leave them alone. They may be right. How did the government find them? There are 12 million illegals in this country and the government can't find one of them. One person doesn't pay his tax and the government finds him. Oh boy do they find him and surround him.

Actually the IRS finds lots of people who don't pay their taxes (remember Richard Hatch?). Would you agree to leave them alone if they were convicted of murder, rather than tax evasion? Should only criminals who don't have guns go to prison? Or is your argument that Americans don't have to pay federal income tax?

Here's what the 'feds' should do: file a civil suit for monies due. If they get their judgment, they should rely on the exact same processes afforded others that win a judgment. no more, no less.

The IRS should have no greater recourse than that which the court provides any other entity.

Why? I don't get why they are being ignored so.

So you want to decriminalize tax evasion?

They stopped attending their trial so they were at home when convicted. Yeah, I don't know why the federal Marshalls didn't go to their home that day and arrest them. Since then they have been able to stockpile supplies and weapons and fringe group supporters.

I don't see how this can be resolved without violence.

They gotta sleep sometime.

True, but it seems they are gathering fringe group supporters to their large home to prevent themselves from being taken into custody.

If they don't want to pay their taxes, they should be stripped of their citizenship and set adrift in the ocean.

Don't understand why "supporters" seem to be able to come and go as they please. Can't the FBI and IRS's CID physically prevent access to the property? If not, the fact that they are now convicted criminals can be used to put pressure on them. Maybe the FBI should tell would-be supporters that by helping the Browns, they could be charged as accessories after the fact to a felony, as well obstruction of justice in helping them resist arrest. Then the next time they spot someone bringing supplies in, arrest and charge that person. I'll bet the rest of their erstwhile supporters would suddenly decide that they had more important business elsewhere.
