Hitchens interview - Times 30.05.07

While Hitchens’s opponents contend that he has veered right in his defence of Iraq, he maintains that he has simply stayed true to his primary cause: defending secularism and reason latterly against its new, fiercest adversaries, “Islamo-fascists”. He prefers to be known as a Blairite, not a Bushite, he says: “Not to duck the issue. We were right to intervene in Bosnia and Kosovo, and we should have done in Rwanda. I would have supported any president who got rid of Saddam.

I don't get it. How was removing Saddam defending secularism. Whatever else Saddam was, he was certainly not an "Islamo-fascist". In fact, the invasion has destroyed what was once a more or less secular civil society and opened the door to Islamism. How on earth does Hitchens rationalize that away?

I am not very informed in the matter but Hitchens claims that Saddam harbored Islamo-fascist terrorists on a number of occasions.

ETA "not".

Hitchens screwed the pooch on his Iraq war support, and he seems to be having a very, very hard time owning up to that mistake.

What makes you think that he thinks he made a mistake?

I don't actually know if he realizes it yet. When I say he has a hard time "owning up to it," that could also mean that he has a hard time admitting it to himself -- based on what he has or hasn't sorted out within his own thinking.

I suspect that Hitchens believes that a strong democratic state is necessary in the area to curtail 'islamo-fascism' (besides Israel, which currently is surviving 'islamo-fascism'). He may be correct; problem is, it looks like Iraq isn't it.
I should really read more of his articles on the subject to get a better idea of his views. But currently I'm going thru "God is not great", so one Hitchens at a time.

I would bet that he wouldn't need to rationalize it, I bet he doesn't think of Saddam's removal as any sort of direct positive for the cause of furthering secularism. I think the Times incorrectly conflated this. Entertainment journalists have a pre-historical steak of never, ever, ever getting the facts straight. No, The Media is more of silly floodpit mudsmuck somodizing utility and copulating whimsical drastically undermining their shitpathetic dim feelings of social connection through unconscious idyllity to cuntslapping celebrities and patronizingly petulant doublestandardardcommunalercialsexisms. Rule 8, rule 8, rule 8.

The Media just plain sucks.

You're probably right. And your use of adjectives is perfectly cromulent. ;)

Damn. Cromulated. I feel the drag. Time to get a little loose.
