Christian "Science" continues to embarass... itself

I just learned something new.

They're building a creation museum near Red Deer, Alberta.

Any Alberta skeptics want to go check it out?

Unfortunately for this (but fortunately for me), I just recently escaped the hellish wasteland that is central Alberta, or I would have gone and checked it out. However, I worked in Red Deer all of last year, and didn't hear a peep about it. However, given the religious sentiments that are overwhelmingly prevalent in the area, it would not surprise me in the least.

The stupid......it burns.

Try this link out (I am ashamed this is from my part of the globe):

I think I lost a few IQ points just reading those ideas. How could anyone think that some of these were science fair topics? You can't even do experiments to show one way or the other!

Twin Cities Creation Science Association said:
10. What was life like before the Flood?
11. Make an experiment to show how Boyle's law applies to nebula.
35. Why does the Bible say there is one glory of the sun, one glory of the moon, and one glory of the stars?
52. What was the weather like before the Flood?
53. Were all the animals friendly to man before the Flood? Idea: raise several baby animals like snake and mouse together to see if they remain friends as they are older.
58. Why did God create the moon to control the tides?
72. What is God made of?
80. Why did God make pests like bugs and mosquitoes?
92. Why do some animals lay eggs and others bear babies alive? Why did God do it this way?
97. Why did God make birds to fly?
103.Where was the Garden of Eden? Is it around today?
114. What shape is outer space?

Yeah, I'd love to see the experiment that tried to prove what God is made of.

I wouldn't like to see the experiment where they raise snakes and mice together - you're going to end up with one seriously upset kid.
(Unless the parents sneak in a fresh baby mouse every night.)

I suspect the intended result there is that the snake will eat the mouse, thus proving that sin has entered the world, or some such stuff and nonsense. What that would prove about how they could have lived together on the Ark or before the Flood is so far beyond me that it's sneaking up behind me.

I would like to have seen Phil Plait there to explain the answer to the tides and astronomy questions.

Not that they would have believed him of course.

"what is god made of?" is by far the silliest christian science fair idea. WTF were they thinking?

14. Can salt water and fresh water fish live in the same water or not?

Great idea: buy some salt-water fish and some fresh-water fish, throw them together into a tank of turbulent muddy brackish water, and leave them there for a year. See how many survive.

A child might be forgiven for not realizing salt is not the same thing as mineral deposits. However, the people in charge should be ashamed of themselves.

I mean, no real Christian would knowingly do sloppy science, knowing that they were buttressing their beliefs with false ideas, right?

The sad thing was that there were more interesting projects.

Hunter Bass, a seventh-grade student, did her project on “Testing Behavioral Incentives.” She talked to preschoolers and teachers to find out if there was a difference in what motivates boys versus girls.
“I found out that boys respond more to prizes, while girls liked hugs more,” Bass said.
The social result of boys receiving a dollar for a reward, while the girls get a 'special hug' would indeed be fascinating to see.

That is an interesting project, though, just in case your post was laden with more sarcasm than I thought.

Hm, so if she got first prize, the judges would probably eschew the prize for a good old fashioned hug...

Seriously, the next time they have this fair on, some skeptics should make some entries with serious results fully worked out with maths and graphs and everything (...that will probably lead to answers they didn't want! ;))

Worth a try?

I think it'd be much more interesting if one of the children entrants stumbled upon, and performed, proper science.

Humm, I am almost never sarcastic but can be rather sardonic sometimes.

The 'projects' all seemed to share a common flaw of being designed to support a particular point of view that is already held. I don't see much science being taught.

How quaint that little girls at such an early age already have a disdain for cash income, and instead wish to be paid in hugs. (Ok, maybe that's sarcasm).
