Another Christian Science Fair embarrasses itself

Brian Benson, an eighth-grade student who won first place in the Life Science/Biology category for his project "Creation Wins!!!," says he disproved part of the theory of evolution. Using a rolled-up paper towel suspended between two glasses of water with Epsom Salts, the paper towel formed stalactites. He states that the theory that they take millions of years to develop is incorrect.

Surely you're making that up. I mean, it couldn't possibly be real, right?

Oh geezus, you were serious. Excuse me while I go cleanse my brain...

The second entry is just so evil. Can't get the mental image of a rodent packed column out of my head after that. I wonder what the packing factor of mixed rodents is?

Fortunately it was a spoof, too bad reality seems to imitate parody a bit too closely sometimes.

I just learned something new.

They're building a creation museum near Red Deer, Alberta.

Any Alberta skeptics want to go check it out?

How long does it take a stalagtite to form?

That's an interesting question, because there really is no one answer. Some of it depends on the types of minerals found in the area. Even the temperature of the cave can dictate the rate of stalactite and stalagmite formation. Another thing that can make age determinations difficult is the fact that growth rates can slow down or stop altogether, in which case rate of deposit cannot be used as a dating tool, as it would estimate an age far too young for the feature (the stalactite would be much older than it appears).

If you are really interested, I would recommend starting a thread on this over in Science, and one of the geologists (such as Tricky) could give you a far better answer than I.

so dating things such as stalagtites or say the earth may be very inaccurate...correct?

No, dating can be very accurate. You just have to understand the tools you are using, and use the correct tools in the correct location. This is why I say the question of stalactite age is interesting, because you cannot simply apply the same ruler to all situations.

How long does it take a stalagtite to form?

How long does it take a tree to grow?

The length of time it takes fro a stalagmite/ stalagtite to from depends on many different factors, all of which can be determined at the site. some stalagtites form (relitivly) quickly, other takes much much longer.

However staligtite formation is by no means an important part of dating the earth, as old as the oldest ones we have are, the earth is orders of magnitude older.

my question is why do they have aspinning globe on thw website?
I mean, everyone knows hat the earth is flat and square, the bible says so.

Psst, kid... the answer they want is "no" to the second part. Now justify it!

Processing "creation", "science", and "fair" along to make a single coherent phrase makes my head hurt.

From the Fair Ideas link:
The Bible says, "The fear of God is the beginning of knowledge." God will not honor scientist's work if they do not honor Him.

So, does god change things to make them wrong if they don't honor him?
